States Senator from Vermont. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the
United States in the 2016 election. A Democrat as of 2015,[2] Sanders had been the longest serving

committee assignments and at times gave Democrats a majority. Sanders became the ranking

two years as chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
Sanders was born and raised in the New York City borough of Brooklyn and graduated from the

Vermontin 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third party campaigns for governor and U.S. senator in
the early to mid 1970s. As an independent, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermonts most

Secondly, to be eligible for SSDI, as previously mentioned, you must be disabled and you must
be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity for 12 months and have earned sufficient
credits based on taxable work to be insured for Social Security purposes. Credits are earned by
the number of years you work and you can earn up to a maximum of four work credits each year.
A credit sometimes referred to as a quarter of coverage (the legal term) is the measure of a
person s work under the Social Security program. Your total covered yearly earnings are used to
figure Social Security credits for both wages and net earnings from self employment. The
amount needed for a credit increases automatically each year that average wages increase. For
this year, 2011, you usually receive one credit for each $1,120 or your earnings and generally 40
credits are needed to be eligible for benefits. There is no minimum age as long as you meet the
very strict Social Security definition of disability; however, to qualify for disability benefits you
must have worked long and recently enough under Social Security to earn the required number of
work credits. Furthermore, worse case situation you happen to die and certain members of your
family may be eligible for survivors benefits if you had worked, paid Social Security taxes, and
earned enough credits. At the time of your death, the number of credits

The Impact Of Social Media On Body Image
In today s society, social media has increased drastically and has become an essential part of many
individuals lives. Unfortunately, studies show that social media negatively impacts women s
perceptions about their own beauty and self worth; research shows that the media portrays beauty
as an unrealistic standard, and due to this, women are suffering from negative body images (Cash
Henry, 1995). From models and celebrities to magazines and billboards, unnatural beauty ideals are
emphasized to women everywhere. Although they are unrealistic, society has managed to push
them on women and make them feel like being natural is not acceptable. Part of the issue is that
media does not portray women of all types, shapes, colors, and forms as beautiful (Patton, 2006).
Furthermore, an inequality in the beauty standards between males and females must be addressed
in order to combat the harmful injustices caused by the unequal expectations of beauty of the sexes.
A study done by Engeln Maddox (2005) researched college women s cognitive processing of print
advertisements when presented pictures of very attractive female models consistent with ideal
beauty standards. The researchers wanted to discover how to images affected the participants and
whether critical processing could combat against social comparison. The researchers found that
making social comparisons after viewing the pictures is significantly associated with internalizing
the beauty ideals which decreases

Comparing French Film Carax And Holy Motors
If you knew nothing about french film you might think that this film is the weirdest/dumbest film
you have ever seen. When in reality it s the exact opposite. Carax is a genius and exemplifies
french culture and cinema as well as global cinema and culture in his film Holy Motors. He does
this by pushing the boundaries of what should be seen on the big screen, evoking emotion and
portraying a message for the viewer to ponder on.
What makes this film a great piece of french cinema is the connections it draws to other films, You
can see throughout film subtle hints at older pieces of french cinema which leads you to the
conclusion that Leos Carax was heavily influenced by such films. Throughout the course of the
film Carax dropped some subtle hints at some classic french films. He even went as far as casting

Essay Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the
target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience
expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and
see it. The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an
array of clips that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a cliff hanger .
This is a term used to explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them
wonder in suspense as to what the possible endings could be, therefore drawing them ... Show more

I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre.
The film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens
image is of the universal logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was
made. The following image is of the DreamWorks logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with
a credible reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of
the opening image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a
heavy drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle.
The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words THE GENERAL is then shown in bold whit
capital letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually
fade into the background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now
accompany the drums. This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates
this with war and battle. This next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up
high. He is walking through lines of soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we
assume he is the general. The general has a stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident.
The lighting is bright but creates the sense of an austere atmosphere and a

The Importance Of National Treasures
Protecting National Treasures in the United States allow us to view our past, present, and future.
We have the moral responsibility to keep our historical sites from deterioration. Viewing these
treasures allow us to view the past and help mold the future for the generations to come. It s a hard
place to be when you want to protect these national treasures, but at the same time you want the
world to progress in education, research, and into a more advanced society. This goal can lead us
down a path of destruction of nature s blessings. This can also be an opportunity cost situation.
National Treasures are currently protected by The Department of Interior and the Department of
Agriculture with the assistance of the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
USDA Forest Service, and National Park Services. They help protect these beauties that are a
dying phenomenon. We still have our current National Parks due to the Wilderness Act of 1964.
If we don t step up, then our children might not have the pleasure of having National Treasures to
visit with their children or know what an actual forest is. This phenomenon is discussed in the
story of The Lorax. How cold and depressing would it be to live in a place where everything
around is artificial including nature.
Mother nature offers a kind of beauty that can t be replicated overnight. Nature takes it s time to
grow which ultimately take one s breath away with its splendor. East Texas is blessed with its

How Did Radical Reconstruction Affect South African Americans
Radical Reconstruction was a unique period in America which enabled previously unseen social
and political changes for the South. However, the impact of these changes was quite limited in their
influence. Radical Reconstruction was the progressive period after Presidential Reconstruction that
spanned from the passing of the Reconstruction Acts in 1867 until The Compromise of 1877.
During this period African Americans briefly felt the political and social effects of government
action, namely a political voice, the suppression of racial terrorist groups and increased civil rights.
This essay argues that whilst these were real positive social and political impacts for Southern
African Americans, their effects were not radical. The most notable... Show more content on

During Radical Reconstruction the government tried to distance African Americans from slavery
by providing new social opportunities. These included the Southern states ratification of the 14th
Amendment, increased education, and stabilising family units . In 1865 to 1866, before Radical
Reconstruction, former slaves were often subject to Black Codes which, based on slave codes,
established black subordination to whites . Hence, their removal and the further attempts to
provide opportunities for freedmen was essential in creating life outside of slavery. Education
was one such success, providing African Americans with opportunities to learn skills outside of
labour. One prominent example of the government s investment into education was South
Carolina, which under the work of Cardozo and Smalls, made education mandatory within their
state and helped create over 3000 schools . The effect was clear, black literacy rates doubled
during the decade of Radical Reconstruction and freedmen began expanding their skillset beyond
physical labour . Whilst the social milestones of education and other civil opportunities in the
South were a crucial step, ultimately, their progress was limited by the refusal of the government
to provide an economic basis for African Americans to live. Most Republican politicians after the
14th and 15th Amendments were uninterested in providing freedmen with the facilities to be
equal. This is seen in the quick rejection of Thaddeus Stevens Land Redistribution proposal to
give 40 acres of land to all males . Whilst education did provide opportunity, a refusal to provide
land reinforced a dichotomy between former master and former slave . Hence, even though Radical
Reconstruction did improve the social standing for African Americans, overall the government s

Parenting In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls s The...
Parenting is not one of the easiest jobs in the world to have; you either are responsible enough to
parent or you re not responsible enough. You have to be able to raise a child from birth and teach
he/she all the necessary tools to succeed in life. As said in The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social
Work, Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and
intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood (245). All parents will raise their
children in different ways, whether they are very strict or they re lenient, others can be easy going
and strict depending on the situation and the way they group up will shape them into who they
become as adults as shown in The Glass Castlewith Jeannette Walls and her parents.
In the memoir The Glass Castle written by Jeannette Walls, she writes about her childhood and
how she grew up with an alcoholic father, Rex, a careless and stubborn mother, Rose Mary, and her
two sisters, Lori and Maureen, and one brother, Brian. The way her parents raised them from letting
them do anything to sometime almost abandoning them is not what you would see in today s
society that often and the parent sno get in trouble for it. While reading The Glass Castle, noticing
the reasoning why the parents are so lenient, unless a choice could cause fatality, is because they
have nothing to lose, the only way their life could get any worse is if one of their children
died. The children had to learn how to do

Managerial Blunders
Introduction A managerial blunder is a blunder or mistake that a company, institution, or firm
makes effecting the image and reputation behind the company s name. The negative externalities
from the blunder can cause a monetary loss along with the destruction of the company s image
and reputation in the working world. Managerial blunders are not uncommon in the working
because of the pressure and scrutiny that large companies are put under by the media. In business
there is no room for mistakes and perfection is expected. One of the biggest managerial blunders
to ever happen is the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
British Petroleum Background BP is a company that delivers energy products around the world

Happy Abortion Chapter 1 Summary
Erica Millar
Happy Abortions Our Bodies in the Era of Choice
Zed Books Ltd, London, UK, 2017. 339 pp. ISBN: 9781786991317
Abortion is commonly addressed in public discourse as a choice that women face with difficulty,
one that negatively marks their experience of femininity and may lead to painful, even traumatic
repercussions. Happy Abortions Our Bodies in the Era of Choice challenges this normative view
by revealing how specific emotions have evolved as common sense discourses of abortion,
reinforcing the cultural meanings through which abortion is evaluated and perceived, both by
women and their surrounding communities. Erica Millar addresses the ways in which emotions
concerning abortion manifest themselves in the rhetoric of choice , ... Show more content on

The following chapters address four dominant emotions through which abortion is conveyed.
Chapter 2 discusses the maternal happiness frame, perceiving women s happiness as only
achievable through motherhood, and thus positioning abortion as a choice that goes against women
s feminine nature . Chapter 3 explores foetocentric grief another prevalent emotion in abortion
discourses, that constructs pregnant women as mothers who go through the loss of their children.
Widely employed in political discourse, the book reveals the effects of this frame on abortion
policies and regulations. Chapter 4 examines the feeling of shame and the resulting silence that
veils the experiences of aborting women. Chapter 5 considers the presence of national interests in
population management and composition, whereby women are perceived not only as individuals,
but as national objects as well. In a Western context, the aborting white woman is viewed as a threat
to the supremacy of white culture, and as failing the nation by refusing to produce more (white)
citizens. Lastly, the book concludes with a call for an alternative approach that rethinks the
interpretations of pro choice discourses, one that does not depict women as uniform in experience,
as ahistorical and naturalised subjects but rather one that considers the broader context of abortion
issues, including power relations and social

What I Learned About Magic
I used to not believed in mythical creatures, magic, or spirits, I never liked the movies or books
with fairies, curses, or evil. I always thought that it was nonsense that only 5 year olds believed
in. For me, magic was a silly form of entertainment that made you gape with fake amazement at a
carnival or magic show. Maybe it was the fact that I refused to believe that forced me into this
mess in the first place, or maybe it was just destined to happen. But either way, I learned my
lesson the hard way. It all began on my summer vacation to see my grandparents in Egypt when I

Crime And Its Effects On Campus Crime
Campus crime has had an effect on people s lives for a long time. Records of criminal activity
on campuses go back as early as the 1850 s. Crimes on campus include acts of violence, drug
possession, and distribution of drugs and alcohol. These crimes have a huge effect on the lives
of the people involved and others around them. Criminal activity can be influenced by events
that occur in a person s life, like the death of a family member or a violent or traumatic
experience. Criminal activity may be prevented in schools with clear enforcement of rules
established to reduce threats and increase security measures. Crimes on campus is anything that
disrupts the educational process. These events have always been around, but this is the earliest
recording. In 1856, a murder took place at a school in Florence, Alabama. A school master
warned his students not to harm his sparrow. A boy stepped on it, and killed it. The school
master strangled the boy days later. The father of the boy shot and killed the schoolmaster at the
school. While this was the first murder to take place at a school, it isn t the worst. In 1927, in
Bath County, a bombing took place at Bath Community School, killing 45 people and injuring 58
others. This is just a few examples of what can happen on campuses. A big part of campus crime is
drug possession. A minor can be charged with juvenile drug possession if caught with a controlled

The Long Term Effects Of Head Start
Head Start is a federally funded government agency, that provides low income youth with pre
school and health services (Barnett, 2007). However, the long term effects of Head Start are
extremely difficult to measure (Lee, Zhai, Brooks Gunn, Han, Waldfogel, 2013). Subsequently,
Head Start has become one of the most controversial government agencies (Nathan, 2007).
Head Start was created in 1965, during Lyndon B. Johnson s presidential administration, as part of
the Great Society plan and the War on Poverty(Currie , 2001). After observing the quality
discrepancies between low income and high income educational settings, Johnson realized that

San Manuel Bueno
In this complicated confessional written by Miguel de Unamuno, the narration in the section of
the book titled San Manuel Bueno, Martyr is led by a woman named Angela ( Angelita )
Carballino. Living in Spain during the 1930s, Angela recounts the experience of the presence of
a parish priest named in her village of Valverde de Lucerna, as she claims he pervaded the most
secret life of my soul (207). What complicates this confessional is the clarity in who is
confessing what to whom. The confessions reveal Don Manuel to be quite the contradiction
because he reveals to a select few of his followers that he does not believe in what he preaches,

He does however do all in his power to suppress doubts, trying to keep her out of what he sees as
harm s way. And if doubts come to torment you, suppress them utterly, even to yourself. The main
thing is to live... (240). Don Manuel possibly broke some of the hope he initially gave to Angela
by revealing the truth to her, but to the rest of the village, they are happily remaining in this
bubble of hope and not breaking the mold. Even Angelita s brother, Lazarus, has experienced the
New World and its dark information but chooses to believe in Don Manuel s logic. Ultimately,
that is his Don Manuel s goal. For Don Manuel, to deceive is to prevent harm; to reveal is to
harm (as he himself has experienced). Above all else, Don Manuel did not use his lie or role as
a tool to cause harm. His role as a priest was used for giving meaning and purpose to people who
did not have the opportunities to discover fulfillment easily elsewhere. He has suffered a dark
past inherited from his father of struggling against ending his own life, so he must make the
villagers understand how important it is to live and not let death and this darkness torment
them in life like it has for him and his own father. In his and his father s own struggles he
emphasizes How that water beckons me in its deep quiet! (243). Don Manuel may not be a saint
but he is doing more good to others than harm. He understands that to live life as one who
doubts can be too much to bear, for it opens up doors to places without answers and hope. To
deceive is a small price to pay when he can save so many lives with his human sense of

there not to love. But for some reason the MLB has been clouded with steroid use, more so than
a lot of other professional sports leagues. Once I found this section in the readings I wanted to
investigate it and dig a little deeper into how big of an issue it really is, and what the league has
or has not done about it. Fortunately, this trend has seemed to fade away and become less of a
problem. However, I would still like to dive into this subject and see the progression from when

This new stricter policy is what would bring the MLB out of the steroid era . When most people

Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Gary Sheffield. However, some names they are not aware
of are Bay Area Laboratory Co Operative (BALCO), or the Biogenesis of America Clinic in
Florida. What s more, it is often unknown that a large majority of the players that have been

BALCO ( BALCO Fast Facts, 2016). MLB athletes named in this case included: Barry Bonds,
Gary Sheffield, Jason and Jeremy Giambi, Armando Rios, Benito Santiago, and Bobby Estalella.
All of these players were given the steroids by a man named Greg Anderson, who was their trainer.
During this investigation, many high profiled players were subpoenaed to testify in front of a

were given to them by Greg Anderson. Conversely, the rest of the MLB players testifying admitted

The Problems of Obedience to Authority
People will do about anything to stay out of trouble when it comes to someone with authority that
cannot be argued with. Stanley Milgram did an experiment on the topic of obedience to authority;
he wanted to know how ordinary people could do horrible things if forced to by someone of
authority. Obedience to authority is instinctual for human beings, there has and will always be
someone with a higher authority than ourselves. How can normal, ordinary people that think of
themselves or are thought of as genuinely good people do things that they know is morally wrong
when told to do so by someone of authority? That is the question that Milgram asked himself when
he started his experiments.
The main point of the experiment was to test why people listen and act on what people of
authority tell them to do. Milgram took ordinary people and proved that most of the general
populace is willing to physically hurt another human being if provoked by someone in a position of
authority. This causes a person to question as Encina does, Why were those who challenged
authority in the minority? So entrenched is obedience it may void personal codes of conduct
(Encina).
In the experiment Milgram picked people off of the streets and tested them on how far they would
go to hurt someone when instructed to do so by someone of authority. Respondents were told that
the experiment would

Negative Effects Of Violent Video Games
September 10, 2017
Writing Assignment #1
Blair Baugher
Introduction The issue of whether or not violent video games encourage children, and teens to be
violent is a heavily debated issue. There are many people who believe that violent video games
DO cause violence in children, and teens, while there are also many people who believe that
violent video games DO NOT cause violence in children, and teens. The relevance of this topic
ties into psychology by further examining how people learn, and the techniques that are prevalent
in how they do so. By stating that violent behavior can arise simply from playing a violent video
game, one is relying on the notion that people will always act in a matter that is reflective of what
they are surrounded by.
Summary
Through significant research, there is evidence that violence has risen in America. Some argue
that this is because children and teens are spending more, and more time playing violent video
games. Though there is ample evidence to prove that playing violent video games can have
negative effects on someone, there is no evidence to directly show that the correlation between the
two rising numbers is related. In the reading, Steven F. Gruel, who argued before the supreme
court, believes that playing, and or watching violent video games, causes children to act violently.
The cause, Gruel believes, isn t directly the video games, but the effect they leave on the children.
Children are spending more of their time playing video

Ernest Rohm Was A German Military Officer And Founding...
Ernest Rohm was a German military officer and founding member of the Nazi party, making him
a close companion and early ally of Adolf Hitler. But, by 1934, Hitler had come to see him as a
potential rival and had him executed during the Night of the Long Knives.
The historical context of Germany in Rohm s rise in power was what thrust him into the position of
high power and authority. In a time of a fractured Germany, the Treaty of Versailles had reduced the
German army to just 100,000 men, which was something that greatly angered all of the German
officials, including Rohm. Therefore, Rohm notoriously fought against the communists who had
taken over Munich in 1919, using brutality in order to eliminate the communists and socialists that
helped, along with others, to destabilize the early years of the Weimar Republic. Born in Munich in
1887, Rohm had a violent relationship with his father which is a direct link to his own violent
nature, and what prompted Rohm s troubled mind to never accept the fact that Germany had lost
World War One. He also believed that the loathed Treaty of Versailles had been imposed on the
Germans by hated and traitorous socialist politicians. Rohm had a possessed hatred for the
democratic republic, and had an extreme flair for politics and natural ability of an organizer. Based
in Munich it was almost inevitable that Rohm would have heard about a young political party that
advocated Rohm views that he held. In 1919 while still an officer in the

protection of whites against blacks in prison, the gang gradually moved to becoming a criminal

murder those who oppose the system, growing so out of control at times, that even their own
ranking members could not consider themselves safe. In prison, they strive to control the sale of
drugs, gambling, and punks, or male prostitutes. The Aryan Brotherhood has carried out contract
killings for the Mexican Mafia, but racist beliefs prevent members from consorting with African
Americans, including even taking a cigarette or a candy bar from them. The only way to be a

AZA recommends a formalized nutrient program for all penguins. Diets should fill nutritional

Physical exams are there to screen for the health of the penguins. Regular screenings help treat
and prevent disease, parasites, and other illnesses. Monthly weights are attainable with training.
Penguins can be trained to stand on a scale to allow for monthly weights which are great for
seasonal changes such as molting and breeding. Blood sampling are also great tools for
monitoring glucose, calcium, and many other blood component levels to look for deficiencies.
During exams animals should have their eyes, feet, beak and mouth for any potential problems.
Molting is very stressful for penguins and it uses a lot of energy thus requiring a nutritional
change. Most penguins molt once a year after breeding however the African penguin molts longer.
One institution had African penguins that molted every moth of the year between March and
August. The molting period has both an increase in appetite and a fasting period due to natural
wild behavior where during the actual molting the penguins would be stuck on land where food
isn t avaible. Wild African penguins have been reported to gain 31% weight during pre molt and a
41% loss of body weight during molt. So some fasting in captivity is natural, however proper
nutrition is important for both pre molt and molting. The whole molting process takes an average
of 16.75 days for African penguins. Also during molting flipper bands can be a problem due to
swelling. If the band is too tight and

Analysis Of Alan Paton s Cry The Beloved Country
In one of C.S. Lewis numerous influential books, The Weight of Glory, he states, To be a Christian
means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. Throughout
life people often become angry with another person, or at a situation. Whether a person is in
control of that situation or not, as a Christian, the Bible speaks of forgiving and loving others no
matter the fault committed against a person. The quote by C.S. Lewis is an example of how it is
inexcusable for Christians to not forgive others because God constantly forgives. While Stephen
does not completely struggle with the forgivenessaspect throughout his experiences in the book,
the various times he becomes angry with another character can sometimes prevent him from
forgiving that person right away. In Alan Patons Crythe Beloved Country, the main character
Stephen Kumalo sins against his sister Gertrude and his sons girlfriend, and this shows how
Stephen struggles with controlling his anger throughout the story. Stephen Kumalo shames his
sister Gertrude because he is upset, angry, and embarrassed that his family has fallen apart. After
Stephen meets with Gertrude for the first time and finds out what she has been doing, he declares,
You have shamed us... A liquor seller, a prostitute with a child and you do not know where it is.
Your brother a priest. How could you do this to us? (Paton 61). However, Stephens rage does not

Human Control Project Analysis
Today, numerous individuals are persuaded that the end of the dark wolf was a blunder, as well as
a drawback to the personal satisfaction in this nation. There has been an open objection to redress
the circumstance made by the lack of awareness of our progenitors. Then again, in trying to address
a circumstance made by the human impulse to control nature, it is significant to recognize the
amount of human impedance is fundamental. Human control must be tempered by an appreciation
and restriction. Projects intended for the insurance and rebuilding of untamed life must reflect
respect for the normal request instead of predominance over it. The outcomes of human activities
including the disposal of the dim wolf have been particularly intense in Yellowstone National Park,
where the absence of a characteristic predator has brought about the overpopulation of buffalo,
deer, and elk. As indicated by Sharon Begley of Newsweek magazine, Missing a characteristic

scholars for the project concede that the most obvious test is to beat the common inclination of
wolves to attempt to return home. The main answer for this quandary is to pen the creatures up

are penned, there is a threat that they will lose some of their ferocity. Be that as it may, such
measures have as of now been fundamental on account of one of the wolf families in Yellowstone.

Pros And Cons Of Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment is a type of physical punishment that has been allowed in 19 states to be used
as a way of discipline for misbehaving children. This physical punishment is mostly relating to
spanking or paddling. A policy that legal near the south at most. [a] These days, corporal
punishment should be used today because kids need to know obedience and should use this
punishmentas a way to wake them up[b]. Corporal punishmentshould be allowed because it is a
lasting punishment, is able to to shape bad students, [c]and can permanently affect students as they
grow in the future.
Other punishments aren t as long lasting.[d] For example, being suspended is like a vacation,
students don t learn anything. Being expelled offers students a longer vacation as they don t need
to go to school and just think about what they have done.[e] This has teachers waiting to keep them
caught up as they finally come back from their suspension. In the article, Corporal Punishment
Persists in U.S. Schools it states, When students receive out of school suspension, they miss out on
instruction time, and they teacher is not obligated in any way to help that student catch up, This
quote represents how tedious it will be and how ineffective having these suspensions and being
expelled can bring. On the other hand, paddling brings a real threat to the students as it is
something long lasting and can permanently sting you in the future. It [f]demonstrates why students

Disordered Eating and the Media Essay
The media constantly sends out an influx of images and messages promoting an almost

body dissatisfaction, predominantly among girls but can also be seen in boys. Throughout the

Kate Moss (Katzmarzk Davis, 2001). Anorexia Nervosaand Bulimia nervosaaffect between 1% and

In another study, Heinberg and Thompson (1995) showed ten minute videotapes of commercials to
female students at a college that glamorized thinness or contained non appearance related images.
Women who viewed the videotape that contained images that emphasized the importance of
thinness in regards to beauty, were found to have higher levels of depression, anger, weight
dissatisfaction, and overall appearance dissatisfaction. In fact women with high dispositional levels
of internalization showed greater levels of dissatisfaction with their weight and overall appearance
after watching the tape, in contrast to participants with low internalization who showed a decrease
in dissatisfaction with weight and appearance (Heingberg Thompson, 1995). Brief exposure to
images promoting thinness as a prerequisite to beauty increases psychological distress and body
image dissatisfaction, and as a result of these findings it is important to note that increased
exposure may result in severe consequences (Heingberg Thompson, 1999, pp. 334). Internalization
may help explain why some girls who have the idea that thinness and beauty are linked together
engrained in their mind exhibit disordered eating behavior and higher levels of body dissatisfaction
then other girls who hear the same message daily (Heingberg

Essay On Extensive Reading
6. Definition of extensive reading
Extensive reading is a language teaching procedure where learners are supposed to read large
quantities of material or long texts for global understanding, the principle goal being obtained
pleasure from the text (Bamford, 2004).
The term of Extensive Reading was originally coined by Palmer (1917) and since different terms
have been used to refer to extensive reading; such as: Supplementary Reading , Book Flood ,
Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading , Substained Silent Reading , Reading because you want to
, free Voluntary Reading , free reading .
Extensive reading is one of the two types: the first type, where language learners read for meaning
that focuses on input. The second type, is to read for fluency development. Extensive reading is

This is what students really enjoy about extensive reading, they are also encouraged to stop reading
anything that is not interesting or that find it too difficult.
9 4 Learners read as much as possible:
The language learning benefits of extensive reading come from the quantity of reading. For the
benefits of extensive reading to take effect, a book a week is an appropriate goal. This is a realistic
target as books written for beginning language learners are very short.
9 5 Reading speed is usually faster rather than slower:
Because of the fact that the material is easy understandable for students, their reading is fluent.
Learners are encouraged to ignore or guess the meaning of a few unknown items they may
encounter from the context.
9 6 The purpose of reading is usually related to pleasure, information and general understanding:
Extensive reading encourages reading for pleasure and information. The aim of reading is not
hundred percent comprehension; to meet the purpose of reading sufficient understanding is
satisfactory.

Different Cell Types Of The Stomach Essay
The stomach is an organ that is part of the digestive system. The stomach is located in the upper
left part of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and next to the liver (Stomach, 2013). The
inner walls of the stomach contain small pores called gastric pits. The gastric pits contain cells that
secrete chemicals that aid in the digestionof food (Nguyen, 2015). In this essay, I will discuss the
different cell types of the stomach, how they work together to provide the overall function of the
stomach, why each organ requires different cell types, why the stomach can t be comprised of just
one cell type, and the advantage of having different types of cells.
The stomach is made up of multiple cells that all have a certain job. The cells that I will be
discussing are the Surface mucous cells, Mucous Neck cells, Parietal Cells, Chief cells, and the G
cells.
Surface mucous cells
Surface mucous cells are the protective epithelial cells that line the surface of the stomach including
the gastric pits. The function of the surface mucous cells is to serve as a physical and chemical
barrier. The surface mucous cells secretes a bicarbonate rich mucus that forms a thick gel like coat
that adheres to the surface epithelium and protects the gastric tissue from abrasion and the acid
content of the stomach (The Stomach, n.d.).
Mucous Neck cell
The mucous neck cells are located in the neck section of the stomach often squeezed between two
parietal cells. The mucous neck cells job is to

Themes Of A Small, Good Thing Essay
Themes in A Small, Good Thing Life consists of persistence and lethargy; patience and tragedy;
felicity and suffering; experiences and failures; ups and downs; and accepting the good with the
bad and the bad along with the good. These details create slices of life moments in our lives. As
we read Raymond Carver s short stories, we see these beautiful moments come to pass. One of
the short stories that presented this was A Small, Good Thing , where Carver demonstrates
occurring themes of loneliness and helplessness, limitations of communication, and human
connections to create multiple slices of life moments. Loneliness/Helplessness The theme of
loneliness and helplessness occurs often throughout A Small, Good Thing . Raymond
introduces us to the baker, who lives a lonely life. There is no trace of other coworkers that work
him and we do not have much of a background story of him. Whenever the baker is mentioned in
the story, we get the impression that he is at the bakery 24/7. The baker says What do you want
at this hour. It s midnight...I work day and night here, trying to make ends meet (Carver 225).
The baker may live a lonely life since he has no children and we do not see any signs of him
having a partner. Throughout the story, the theme of helplessness is also present. Ann and Howard,

The understanding of what Science Fiction is can be explained differently by many people. Most
perceive Science Fiction was windows to our future, as if those writers foresaw the future and are
now giving an explanation of how the future of the world will be. Frederic Jameson argues that
Science Fictions is more of a mock future , Science Fictionuses pieces of our everyday life and
morphed it into an image of our assumed future.
Science fiction is able to demonstrate and dramatize our incapacity to image the future . Frederic

Science Fiction points out the flaws we have as a society. One major flaw is the construction of
capitalism. A structure made where we are virtually fighting each other to be the person who owns
the most, to become the person with the most power.
In Dawn by Octavia Butler, a world is created in the post destruction of the world. It begins after
the destruction of Earth, ruled by greed the grew from the capitalism government. A world where

Introduction
Maintenance of genomic integrity is crucial for cell survival in resistance to endogenous and
exogenous environmental insults to the genetic material. Multiple DNA repair pathways coordinate
the response to such genotoxins and protect our genome [1]. Endogenous insults may be generated
as a byproduct of cellular metabolism in the form of reactive oxygen species or during
physiological processes such as meiotic recombination, mating type switching in yeasts, V(D)J
recombination and DNA replication transcription collision [2 5]. Exogenous stresses include

NER is a highly conserved DNA repair pathway that is the primary pathway responsible for the
removal of bulky DNA lesions i.e., helix distorting lesions such as UV induced photoproducts,
environmental mutagens, and some chemotherapeutic agents. NER has two distinct subtypes:
global genome repair (GG NER), which can occur anywhere in the genome and transcription
coupled repair (TC NER), which removes distorting lesions that obstruct transcription [20, 21].
Following lesion recognition, the damage containing oligonucleotide is excised from DNA by a
dual enzyme incision step mediated by ERCC1 XPF, which makes the first incision and XPG
which incises the 3 end of single/double strand junction [22]. This results in the release of lesion
containing oligonucleotide with TFIIH bound to it [23]. The gap filling step in NER relies on the
concerted action of DNA ligase and its cofactors DNA polymerases Оґ and Оµ, the sliding clamp
PCNA, the clamp loader RFC and RPA [24]. MMR is a is a highly conserved post replication repair
pathway that corrects DNA mismatches generated during DNA replication that escapes the
proofreading function of DNA polymerases thereby preventing mutations and tumorigenesis [25

The Importance Of Electricity In Canada
Electricity has been here since the early 1900 s. When it started, there wasn t much demand for it
due to the fact that most people didn t have it in their houses, and that the only use for it was for
light bulbs. Then came heaters, stoves, followed by electric appliances and everything else that is
powered by electricity. Today the demand is so strong for electricity that have to find other ways
how to produce it. Currently Canada is the number one producer of electricity in the world. The
United States have to buy energy from Canada, because the demand is too strong. Our use of
electricity is causing problems to our planet so now is the perfect time to produce more solar panels.
Solar energy begins with the sun. Solar panels, also known as photovoltaics, are used to convert
light from the sun, which is composed of particles of energy called photons , into electricity that
can be used to power electrical loads. Light from the sun is a renewable energy resource that

Comparing and Contrasting Two Views of How Social Order Is...
Comparing and contrasting two views of how social order is produced as in the public spaces.
The concept of social order has various definitions. The explanations for the concept of social
order tend towards large scale studies and macro theories with a sharp focus on the analysis of
our society as an entity. There are however some studies that are more specific and are concerned
with issues smaller scale issues such as families, crime, communities while raising issues of
social order on a level which is described by Scott Marshall (2009, p.707) as micro. This work
explores the differences as a well as similarities of ideas that relates to the creation as well as
management of social order on the basis of Buchanan s work titled Traffic in Towns as well as
the ideas that were advanced by Hans Monderman (Buchanan, 1963).In this work, a lot of effort
is placed on the relationship that exists between the traffic and the pedestrians as well as how the
governance of these two important variables play part in the creation of social order. Buchanan
and Monderman effectively investigated the relationship that exists between pedestrians and the
traffic in the making and remaking of social order. The conclusion of the Second World War saw
the level of traffic congestions in most of the Britain s towns as well as cities increase in
correlation with the rather exponential rise in the level of car ownership as noted by Silva (2009,
p.325). Buchanan was effectively commission by the

Taking a Look at Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacterial infection that can be transmitted
during sexual contact with an infected person through vaginal anal or oral sex (REF) Symptoms
are usually mild and tend to go unnoticed and this is why it Is known as the silent disease (simms
2006) Chlamydia infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease; (PID) which is the most
preventable cause of infertility (Paavonen and eggert kruse 1999) and affects around 10 40% of
women (Health protection Agency 2009) (HPA). During an episode of PID bacteria can move
into the upper reproductive tract and cause the uterus, fallopian tubes and surrounding areas to
become swollen and scarred (RISSER AND RISSER 2007). Repeated episodes of PID increase the
risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancyand can be more difficult for a woman to become pregnant
because her eggs are unable to pass through easily. (SIMMS 2006) It is estimated that 1 in every
10 women with PID become infertile. Although blocked and damaged tubes can sometimes be
treated, where this is not possible some woman may consider a procedure called in vitro
fertilisation (IVF) to have children. This involves surgically removing eggs from a woman s
ovaries and fertilising them before planting the eggs back into the woman s womb.(OAKESHOTT

Pilgrim s Progress By John Bunyan
1) Pilgrim s Progress by John Bunyan is an infamous Christian allegory and wildly considered to be
the first great book of the non secular English language. After the Bible, it was the most read book
for centuries. Bunyan wrote it based on his largely Baptist, often Calvinist theology. This is evident
in Pilgrim s Progress through the name choices of the main characters and his conversation with
Ignorance regarding reaching the Celestial City. The major points which are total depravity,
unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of saints. Total
depravity states that all mean are inherently sinners, unconditional election entails that certain
people were predestined to receive God s grace no... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian tries to correct him and explain that there is only one way to the Celestial City, and his
deeds do not matter. Due to the doctrines of Predestination and Total Depravity, Christian is correct
under Calvinism. Since Ignorance is inherently a sinner, and not elect, he is unable to accept God
s grace and enter the Celestial City by means of his own path according to the concept of Total
Depravity. However, one way that Pilgrim s Progress contradicts Calvinist theory is when
Christian is reading his bible at the very beginning and confesses to his family that he is worried
for their safety because fire from Heaven will soon obliterate the city that they live in and he doesn
t know how to save them. This is contradictory to Calvinism because Christian should inherently
know that he cannot. Since God has preordained everything that will ever happen, Christian cannot
save his family unless that was already been in God s plan. Pilgrim s Progress largely exemplifies
Calvinist ideology throughout the text with each new character that Christian meats. Bunyan made
his viewpoint very clear every everyone of his literary decisions from what the characters shall be
named to how they go about their journeys. Although there are a few nuances that seem less than
Calvinistic, such as Christian s worries at the beginning, for the most part it stats true to the Calvin
course.

  • 4. The Impact Of Social Media On Body Image In today s society, social media has increased drastically and has become an essential part of many individuals lives. Unfortunately, studies show that social media negatively impacts women s perceptions about their own beauty and self worth; research shows that the media portrays beauty as an unrealistic standard, and due to this, women are suffering from negative body images (Cash Henry, 1995). From models and celebrities to magazines and billboards, unnatural beauty ideals are emphasized to women everywhere. Although they are unrealistic, society has managed to push them on women and make them feel like being natural is not acceptable. Part of the issue is that media does not portray women of all types, shapes, colors, and forms as beautiful (Patton, 2006). Furthermore, an inequality in the beauty standards between males and females must be addressed in order to combat the harmful injustices caused by the unequal expectations of beauty of the sexes. A study done by Engeln Maddox (2005) researched college women s cognitive processing of print advertisements when presented pictures of very attractive female models consistent with ideal beauty standards. The researchers wanted to discover how to images affected the participants and whether critical processing could combat against social comparison. The researchers found that making social comparisons after viewing the pictures is significantly associated with internalizing the beauty ideals which decreases ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They promote a film and present it to the target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience expectations of the film. • 10. How Did Radical Reconstruction Affect South African Americans Radical Reconstruction was a unique period in America which enabled previously unseen social and political changes for the South. However, the impact of these changes was quite limited in their influence. Radical Reconstruction was the progressive period after Presidential Reconstruction that spanned from the passing of the Reconstruction Acts in 1867 until The Compromise of 1877. During this period African Americans briefly felt the political and social effects of government action, namely a political voice, the suppression of racial terrorist groups and increased civil rights. This essay argues that whilst these were real positive social and political impacts for Southern African Americans, their effects were not radical. The most notable... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During Radical Reconstruction the government tried to distance African Americans from slavery by providing new social opportunities. These included the Southern states ratification of the 14th Amendment, increased education, and stabilising family units . In 1865 to 1866, before Radical Reconstruction, former slaves were often subject to Black Codes which, based on slave codes, established black subordination to whites . Hence, their removal and the further attempts to provide opportunities for freedmen was essential in creating life outside of slavery. Education was one such success, providing African Americans with opportunities to learn skills outside of labour. One prominent example of the government s investment into education was South Carolina, which under the work of Cardozo and Smalls, made education mandatory within their state and helped create over 3000 schools . The effect was clear, black literacy rates doubled during the decade of Radical Reconstruction and freedmen began expanding their skillset beyond physical labour . Whilst the social milestones of education and other civil opportunities in the South were a crucial step, ultimately, their progress was limited by the refusal of the government to provide an economic basis for African Americans to live. Most Republican politicians after the 14th and 15th Amendments were uninterested in providing freedmen with the facilities to be equal. This is seen in the quick rejection of Thaddeus Stevens Land Redistribution proposal to give 40 acres of land to all males . Whilst education did provide opportunity, a refusal to provide land reinforced a dichotomy between former master and former slave . Hence, even though Radical Reconstruction did improve the social standing for African Americans, overall the government s failure to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Parenting is not one of the easiest jobs in the world to have; you either are responsible enough to parent or you re not responsible enough. You have to be able to raise a child from birth and teach he/she all the necessary tools to succeed in life. As said in The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social Work, Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood (245). All parents will raise their children in different ways, whether they are very strict or they re lenient, others can be easy going and strict depending on the situation and the way they group up will shape them into who they become as adults as shown in The Glass Castlewith Jeannette Walls and her parents. In the memoir The Glass Castle written by Jeannette Walls, she writes about her childhood and how she grew up with an alcoholic father, Rex, a careless and stubborn mother, Rose Mary, and her two sisters, Lori and Maureen, and one brother, Brian. The way her parents raised them from letting them do anything to sometime almost abandoning them is not what you would see in today s society that often and the parent sno get in trouble for it. Happy Abortion Chapter 1 Summary Erica Millar Happy Abortions Our Bodies in the Era of Choice Zed Books Ltd, London, UK, 2017. 339 pp. ISBN: 9781786991317 Abortion is commonly addressed in public discourse as a choice that women face with difficulty, one that negatively marks their experience of femininity and may lead to painful, even traumatic repercussions. Happy Abortions Our Bodies in the Era of Choice challenges this normative view by revealing how specific emotions have evolved as common sense discourses of abortion, reinforcing the cultural meanings through which abortion is evaluated and perceived, both by women and their surrounding communities. The following chapters address four dominant emotions through which abortion is conveyed. Chapter 2 discusses the maternal happiness frame, perceiving women s happiness as only achievable through motherhood, and thus positioning abortion as a choice that goes against women s feminine nature . Chapter 3 explores foetocentric grief another prevalent emotion in abortion discourses, that constructs pregnant women as mothers who go through the loss of their children. Widely employed in political discourse, the book reveals the effects of this frame on abortion policies and regulations. Chapter 4 examines the feeling of shame and the resulting silence that veils the experiences of aborting women. Chapter 5 considers the presence of national interests in population management and composition, whereby women are perceived not only as individuals, but as national objects as well. In a Western context, the aborting white woman is viewed as a threat to the supremacy of white culture, and as failing the nation by refusing to produce more (white) citizens. Lastly, the book concludes with a call for an alternative approach that rethinks the interpretations of pro choice discourses, one that does not depict women as uniform in experience, as ahistorical and naturalised subjects but rather one that considers the broader context of abortion issues, including power relations and social ... Criminal activity can be influenced by events that occur in a person s life, like the death of a family member or a violent or traumatic experience. Even Angelita s brother, Lazarus, has experienced the New World and its dark information but chooses to believe in Don Manuel s logic. Ultimately, that is his Don Manuel s goal. For Don Manuel, to deceive is to prevent harm; to reveal is to harm (as he himself has experienced). Above all else, Don Manuel did not use his lie or role as a tool to cause harm. The Problems Of Obedience And Authority Evangelina Venturini Colleen Harvel English F6974 October 15, 2014 The Problems of Obedience to Authority People will do about anything to stay out of trouble when it comes to someone with authority that cannot be argued with. Stanley Milgram did an experiment on the topic of obedience to authority; he wanted to know how ordinary people could do horrible things if forced to by someone of authority. Obedience to authority is instinctual for human beings, there has and will always be someone with a higher authority than ourselves. How can normal, ordinary people that think of themselves or are thought of as genuinely good people do things that they know is morally wrong when told to do so by someone of authority? That is the question that Milgram asked himself when he started his experiments. The main point of the experiment was to test why people listen and act on what people of authority tell them to do. Milgram took ordinary people and proved that most of the general populace is willing to physically hurt another human being if provoked by someone in a position of authority. This causes a person to question as Encina does, Why were those who challenged authority in the minority? So entrenched is obedience it may void personal codes of conduct (Encina). • 21. Negative Effects Of Violent Video Games September 10, 2017 Writing Assignment #1 Blair Baugher Introduction The issue of whether or not violent video games encourage children, and teens to be violent is a heavily debated issue. There are many people who believe that violent video games DO cause violence in children, and teens, while there are also many people who believe that violent video games DO NOT cause violence in children, and teens. The relevance of this topic ties into psychology by further examining how people learn, and the techniques that are prevalent in how they do so. By stating that violent behavior can arise simply from playing a violent video game, one is relying on the notion that people will always act in a matter that is reflective of what they are surrounded by. Summary Through significant research, there is evidence that violence has risen in America. Some argue that this is because children and teens are spending more, and more time playing violent video games. Though there is ample evidence to prove that playing violent video games can have negative effects on someone, there is no evidence to directly show that the correlation between the two rising numbers is related. In the reading, Steven F. Gruel, who argued before the supreme court, believes that playing, and or watching violent video games, causes children to act violently. Ernest Rohm was a German military officer and founding member of the Nazi party, making him a close companion and early ally of Adolf Hitler. But, by 1934, Hitler had come to see him as a potential rival and had him executed during the Night of the Long Knives. The historical context of Germany in Rohm s rise in power was what thrust him into the position of high power and authority. In a time of a fractured Germany, the Treaty of Versailles had reduced the German army to just 100,000 men, which was something that greatly angered all of the German officials, including Rohm. Therefore, Rohm notoriously fought against the communists who had taken over Munich in 1919, using brutality in order to eliminate the communists and socialists that helped, along with others, to destabilize the early years of the Weimar Republic. Born in Munich in 1887, Rohm had a violent relationship with his father which is a direct link to his own violent nature, and what prompted Rohm s troubled mind to never accept the fact that Germany had lost World War One. He also believed that the loathed Treaty of Versailles had been imposed on the Germans by hated and traitorous socialist politicians. Rohm had a possessed hatred for the democratic republic, and had an extreme flair for politics and natural ability of an organizer. Physical exams are there to screen for the health of the penguins. Regular screenings help treat and prevent disease, parasites, and other illnesses. Monthly weights are attainable with training. Penguins can be trained to stand on a scale to allow for monthly weights which are great for seasonal changes such as molting and breeding. Blood sampling are also great tools for monitoring glucose, calcium, and many other blood component levels to look for deficiencies. During exams animals should have their eyes, feet, beak and mouth for any potential problems. Molting is very stressful for penguins and it uses a lot of energy thus requiring a nutritional change. Most penguins molt once a year after breeding however the African penguin molts longer. One institution had African penguins that molted every moth of the year between March and August. The molting period has both an increase in appetite and a fasting period due to natural wild behavior where during the actual molting the penguins would be stuck on land where food isn t avaible. Wild African penguins have been reported to gain 31% weight during pre molt and a 41% loss of body weight during molt. So some fasting in captivity is natural, however proper nutrition is important for both pre molt and molting. The whole molting process takes an average of 16.75 days for African penguins. Lewis numerous influential books, The Weight of Glory, he states, To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. Throughout life people often become angry with another person, or at a situation. Whether a person is in control of that situation or not, as a Christian, the Bible speaks of forgiving and loving others no matter the fault committed against a person. The quote by C.S. Lewis is an example of how it is inexcusable for Christians to not forgive others because God constantly forgives. While Stephen does not completely struggle with the forgivenessaspect throughout his experiences in the book, the various times he becomes angry with another character can sometimes prevent him from forgiving that person right away. In Alan Patons Crythe Beloved Country, the main character Stephen Kumalo sins against his sister Gertrude and his sons girlfriend, and this shows how Stephen struggles with controlling his anger throughout the story. Stephen Kumalo shames his sister Gertrude because he is upset, angry, and embarrassed that his family has fallen apart. After Stephen meets with Gertrude for the first time and finds out what she has been doing, he declares, You have shamed us... The stomach is located in the upper left part of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and next to the liver (Stomach, 2013). The inner walls of the stomach contain small pores called gastric pits. The gastric pits contain cells that secrete chemicals that aid in the digestionof food (Nguyen, 2015). In this essay, I will discuss the different cell types of the stomach, how they work together to provide the overall function of the stomach, why each organ requires different cell types, why the stomach can t be comprised of just one cell type, and the advantage of having different types of cells. The stomach is made up of multiple cells that all have a certain job. The cells that I will be discussing are the Surface mucous cells, Mucous Neck cells, Parietal Cells, Chief cells, and the G cells. Surface mucous cells Surface mucous cells are the protective epithelial cells that line the surface of the stomach including the gastric pits. The function of the surface mucous cells is to serve as a physical and chemical barrier. The surface mucous cells secretes a bicarbonate rich mucus that forms a thick gel like coat that adheres to the surface epithelium and protects the gastric tissue from abrasion and the acid content of the stomach (The Stomach, n.d.). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... NER is a highly conserved DNA repair pathway that is the primary pathway responsible for the removal of bulky DNA lesions i.e., helix distorting lesions such as UV induced photoproducts, environmental mutagens, and some chemotherapeutic agents. NER has two distinct subtypes: global genome repair (GG NER), which can occur anywhere in the genome and transcription coupled repair (TC NER), which removes distorting lesions that obstruct transcription [20, 21]. Following lesion recognition, the damage containing oligonucleotide is excised from DNA by a dual enzyme incision step mediated by ERCC1 XPF, which makes the first incision and XPG which incises the 3 end of single/double strand junction [22]. This results in the release of lesion containing oligonucleotide with TFIIH bound to it [23]. The gap filling step in NER relies on the concerted action of DNA ligase and its cofactors DNA polymerases Оґ and Оµ, the sliding clamp PCNA, the clamp loader RFC and RPA [24].
