Todorov's theory proposes that all narratives follow 5 steps: 1) an initial state of equilibrium, 2) a disruption to the equilibrium, 3) recognition of the disruption, 4) an attempt to repair the disruption, and 5) the restoration of a new equilibrium. The document provides examples of how these 5 steps can be seen in the plot of a typical "zombie apocalypse" story.

4. Equilibrium
 The first part of the story which sets the scene and the
characters and establishes a peaceful start or the
setting of the story.
 E.g. in a ‘zombie apocalypse’ movie at the start
everyone no one is infected and life is as it should be.

5. Disruption
 This is where the plot takes a turn and an issue has
presented itself disrupting that equilibrium.
 E.g. the infection breaks out and people are turning
into zombies breaking that peace and normality.

6. Recognition
 This is where the protagonist and characters realize
this problem and then start making and effort to fix it.
 E.g. the protagonist realize how to beat the zombies
and what it takes to make a cure.

7. Repair
 This is where the characters attempt to fix the issue
and defat the disruption.
 E.g. the characters find a cure and defeat the zombies.

8. New Equilibrium
 The characters have fixed the disruption now establish
a new equilibrium for them.
 E.g. the zombies are defeated and there is a cure for
everyone. They now try to return everything to normal
and establish a new equilibrium.
