Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory proposes that all stories follow a three-part structure: 1) an initial state of equilibrium is established, 2) some event disrupts this equilibrium, and 3) the story concludes with the restoration of equilibrium or a new equilibrium. The theory is exemplified in the 2014 film Kingsman, but is broken by the 2000 film Memento, which tells its story backwards and does not follow a linear path from disruption to resolution.
