In this powerpoint is an example of the Propp theory towards the film industry and how believed there were 7 characters that were played in every film.
2. About Him
• Vladimir propp was a Russian man who analyzed the plot components of Russian folk tales to
identify their simple narrative elements.
• Propp believed that there was 7 character types with every film,
• 1. The hero
• 2. The villain
• 3. The donor
• 4. the dispatcher
• 5. the helper
• 6. the false hero
• 7. the princess
3. Example 1 – Pirates of The Caribbean 5
• The Hero – Henry Turner & Carina Smyth
• The Villain – Captain Salazar
• The Donor - Hector Barbosa
• The Dispatcher – Carina Smyth
• The Helper – Will turner & Hector Barbosa & Captain Jack
Sparrow
• The False Hero – Captain Jack Sparrow
• The Princess – Carina Smyth
4. The Hero
• In the Pirates of The Caribbean 5 there are actually 2 hero's, Carina Smyth the young girl the
villagers believe to be witch because of her brains and the one we learn is the daughter to
Hector Barbosa. Henry Turner we already know is the son of Will Turner and Henry has his own
mission to release his father from the curse of the Flying Dutchman.
• Carina Smyth in the film isn't the dominate character, but she is still the biggest part of
helping them find the treasure, she is the smart and well educated one who is able to read
the map that has been claimed that no man can read it, and yet she has discovered the map
and has decoded it. On the other hand Henry Turner is the man with the heart, the
emotionally strong hero, who has his heart set on freeing his father from the curse of the
flying Dutchman. The stereotype of the hero is changed within this film, which in a way makes
it more interesting to have two characters who aren't physically the strongest but mentally
and emotionally play the biggest part. The pair put together searching for the same item,
bring a dominate relationship. With Carina Smyth being the co-leader within a Patriarchal
society.
• Bringing Feminism into it is that she takes control she acts as the leader in order to fulfill the
mission successfully.
5. The Villain
• A villain is stereotypically a man or a woman with an extreme amount of
power but use that power for the worse, to rain havoc on a city or to
gain something they seek.
• Within the Pirates of The Caribbean Captain Salazar is the known villain
who has come back from the dead with his crew after a young Jack
Sparrow had killed him and his crew many years ago. A villain usually has
a power over the others, something he can use against them. Captain
Salazar has the power to walk on water and well really anything,
because he’s dead, they need to break that curse to completely kill him.
He holds a Hegemony with his group, he is the leader, the dominate
leader. Within the movie he is a dominate character at the helm of a
crew. Salazar is one of the leaders in the film within the Patriarchal
society.
6. The Donor
• The donor is a character that gives something to another
character to help them along their journey, something that will
give them the help and possibly to gain an advantage over the
battle they might fight.
• In the Pirates of The Caribbean Hector Barbosa gives Carina, Henry
and Captain Jack Sparrow the help because Hector’s daughter is
actually Carina. Barbosa builds that emotional connection again
back with his daughter and this why he helps them, he also has
the goal to live happily ever after as a rich rogue. He gives
Captain Jack Sparrow his experience as a pirate in order to help
find the treasure.
7. The Dispatcher
• The dispatcher is usually the character who sends the others out
on a mission or out to complete an objective.
• Carina Smyth plays the dispatcher as she urges the others to help
her find the treasure, she persuades the other characters that she
is smart and educated enough to sail at sea and lead an expedition
on finding the treasure. She is the only one that can read the map
and this is why they agree to help her but all the characters
themselves have their own objectives that they want to fulfill.
8. The Helper
• The helper, is at is says, it is a character who helps the hero defeat the villain
within a film.
• Captain Jack Sparrow is the biggest helper has he has the courage and the skills
to be able to defeat the villain, but also he is trying to hide away from Captain
Salazar, he does not want another confrontation with him until he has found the
treasure and can break the curse to defeat him.
• William Turner is the captain of the flying Dutchman and is the father of Henry
Turner and he helps find the treasure with his skill of the flying Dutchman the
crew of the living dead that aid Carina and Henry in finding the treasure,
helping his son to find it and free him from the curse of the flying Dutchman.
• Hector Barbosa again comes along to help out with the mission because he
reunites with his long lost daughter and he builds an emotional connection back
to her, and he helps because he doesn't’t want to see her in danger.
• All of these characters are dominate leaders within the Patriarchal society.
9. The False Hero
• The false hero is the one the audience believe is the hero and is
the one who comes out at the end as the one that saves the day,
and normally saves the real hero’s from a dangerous situation.
• Captain Jack Sparrow saves the day at the end of film, saving the
Carina and Henry from almost certain death and the reason he
does this is because he has the dream of sailing the seven seas as
a legendary parent. He takes the lead in Patriarchal society to
save the day, acting as a dominate character with the Hegemony
he leads successfully.
10. The Princess
• The princess is the one who is saved at the end of the day, the one
who is loved by another character who goes out their way to save
her.
• Carina Smyth at the beginning has no interest in Henry Turner until
it comes to the end where Henry ends up helping Jack Sparrow to
save her life from the wrath of Captain Salazar, also helping her
find the treasure is the main goal. Helping her because of the
connection that slowly builds up throughout the film. The princess
is usually the subordinate character within the Patriarchal society,
the verisimilitude is as it seems she is the character who is saved
at the end of the day.
