Narrative structure in films typically follows a three-act structure of beginning, middle, and end. This includes establishing an initial equilibrium, a disruption that introduces a problem, and restoring order by resolving the problem. Several narrative theories describe common patterns in film structure. Todorov's theory outlines a five-stage process from equilibrium to equilibrium via disruption, realization, restoring order. Propp's theory categorizes character types like heroes, villains, and helpers. Levi-Strauss theory views narratives as differences of opinion, such as good vs evil.
2. What is narrative structure?
Narrative Structure is about the content of story. There are two ways to
describe the narrative structure which is a plot and a story and they are split
into the beginning, middle and end of a story
3. Structure of a Film
These are the stages where the narrative in a film go through. In each film
you watch, these are the stages they that make the narrative interesting and
the reason to watch the movie.
4. What structures do most film take?
Most film have a narrative that are either based on a written/fictional story
or on a real event like real life event that happened that
5. How narratives are shown?
A narrative usually starts off with a situation that has exploded into people’s
lives that has turned into a problem. This has caused a chain of events to
happen to solve this problem. At the end, the problem is solved and the
whole narrative is completed.
6. Narrative Theories: Todorov's theory
Todorov’s theory is that every movie follows the same pattern or same narrative
structure which is a 5 stage process. The first stage in his theory is the Equilibrium
which is where everything is normal in the story. Afterwards is a disruption which
is where a problem has been caused or where everything is going to change.
Afterwards is the realisation, this is when everyone notices the problem and they
start to panic and it turns into chaos. The second to last one is restoring order
which is where people are trying to solve the problem and the final stage is the
equilibrium where the problem has been fixed and everything has return to its
normal state.
7. Narrative Theories: Propp’s theory
Propp’s theory is about how characters are classified and how there are
different character types in films. In Propp’s theory, it says there is a hero
who is the main protagonist that wants peace, a villain who is the main
antagonist that just wants to disrupt the peace. Another role is the dispatcher
who sends the hero to their quest, the donor who offers a helping hand which
is a gift to the protagonist, the false hero who pretends to help the hero but
backstabs the hero at the end.
8. Narrative Theories: Strauss theory
Levi-Strauss theory is that the narratives in most film is differences in opinion
e.g. Star Wars on how the planets should be running and Good vs. evil.
