2. Realist Narrative
• Realist narrative focuses on the everyday
thoughts and concerns of society. It shows
the portrayal of realistic events.
Fairy – Washing up liquid:
This advert is a Realist narrative advert because its
shown to clean all the time and never run out as it
‘last longer than the next leading brand’; For
example, during the advert it does a sort of time skip
as it goes through all the years its been in production
to show that it hardly ever runs out.
3. Anti – Realist Narrative
• Anti – Realist narrative focuses on something
that will never happen to the audience. It
will have the freedom to use all aspects of
CGI.
Citroen - C4 - Staying Alive:
The Citroen C4 adverts are Anti-Realist because
there isn't an existing car that can just get up and
start dancing in front of people on the street. But
because its so creative it makes people want to buy
the product more.
4. Animation
• An animation advert is when you use/see
cartoon style / illustrations of characters to
promote the products message.
Tetley's – Extra strong:
The Tetley's extra strong advert is a great advert as it shows
by the use of animation that it is a strong type of tea. The
way it has been illustrated shows that any one who likes a
strong cuppa’ then this is the one for them, they show this by
making one of the characters go on a workout and shows him
getting stronger as the advert goes on. Because of how its
been shown it adds emphasis to the fact that it is a strong
kind of tea.
5. Talking Heads
• A talking heads advert usually consists of
people talking into a camera. A close up
picture of a person who is talking to the
camera. It makes the audience feel more
like they are being addressed personally.
Nike – Glory is ours:
This advert is a good talking heads advert because it has
different football stars of the 21st
century (For example;
Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand).
This advert then catches the eye of young footballers and
anyone who plays football or likes Nike as a brand.
6. Series
• A realist narrative is when similar
advertisements are released every month or so
from a certain product with a continuing story
line. This can create a strong brand identity.
Go Compare
This advert is a series, because every month or so they have a
new scenario in their advert; For example, They used to have the
main character singing about the website and now have different
scenarios in which he is hurt or maimed to stop him singing.
7. Documentary
• A documentary styled advert is an
informative advertising – Usually
demonstrating the product and its benefits.
Actionaid ‘Sponsor a child appeal’:
This is a very good example of a documentary styled advert
because it pulls on your heart strings. It makes you feel
incredibly sorry for the poor children who are starving in
Africa, and makes you want to help. Also, the voice over
makes it sound more dramatic as they have soft sad music
playing whilst the voice over is talking.
8. Surreal (Abstract)
• A Surreal (Abstract) advert is something
were you are not trying to represent reality
but experimental, artistic and creative.
Sony ‘Bravia – Paint’:
This is a great abstract TV advert because it is just all about
paint spurting out from flat windows, buildings and.
From this advert, we can see that by getting a
Sony Bravia TV, you will be getting an amazing picture with it
that brings colour to life as that’s what the colours and the
advert represent.
9. Humorous
• A humorous advert would consist of someone/
people being funny, light hearted or amusing.
Sometimes, humorous Ads can have celebrities
being funny also. This then makes people want to
see the advert again and again.
Cadbury – Crispello:
This is a good example of a Humorous TV Ad because it
involves a family of three going for a walk in the woods with
the sons girlfriend, while walking she random comes out and
starts singing in front of them and opens up hidden feelings
about her boyfriends dad and how she fancies him while
serenading him, at the end of it she takes a bite of a Cadbury
‘Crispello’ showing us that they are new and spontaneous.
10. Dramatic
• The dramatic style of advertising is a good way of
telling the audience, For example; About serious
illness’ such as cancer and dementia. It builds
tension, suspense and trying to shock the audience
in to what is/has happened to people.
Cancer Research UK - When I Was Diagnosed:
This is one of the examples for a dramatic TV advert because
it is about a poor woman who just been diagnosed with a life
threatening illness that could kill her.
It brings sadness and shock to the audience which
brings out the drama and tension out in the advert.
11. Parodic (Parody)
• A Parodic (Parody) style of TV of advertising is where an
advert makes fun of a famous film/TV scene and the
company can then base their TV advert about it.
• For example; They have based a phones4u advert on a
famous film called ‘The Haunting’ which is a parody
because they have then made a horror scene, but also
showing off the fact that they sell phones at low prices.
Phones4U - The Royal Wedding:
This is a good example of a Parodic advert because they have
taken a big British celebration and a religious. By using such a
big event they had the risk of it either being completely
wrong and offending people or getting it completely right and
gaining a massive target market, luckily the way they done it
was so good that it actually benefitted them more.
