A learning object is defined as a digital or non-digital entity that can be used for learning, education, or training. Learning objects have characteristics of being reusable, modular, extensible, interoperable, platform-independent, and durable. For learning objects to be findable and reusable, they must be organized, searchable, digitally preserved, copyrighted by their authors, and accessible in a learning object repository like CSUN ScholarWorks. The CSUN ScholarWorks learning object repository uses Dublin Core Metadata standards and is part of a larger CSU initiative to provide open access to learning objects.
