  • 2. A learning object is. . . “Entity, digital or non-digital, that may be used for learning, education or training.” (IEEE, 2001) “Digital resource that can be reused to support learning.” (Wiley, 2002)

Thank you for joining us today to Learn about Learning Objects.We assume you attend these sessions – physically or virtually – because you’re interested in finding ways to enhance your face-to-face and online instruction with technologies and techniques that enrich your students’ learning. This session is not so much about implementing new technologies as it is about making the most of what you have already created.The materials you develop for classroom instruction require careful consideration and planning. To put items on line for “asynchronous” learning or reference, you must go a step farther: you must prepare your tutorial, simulation, or online quiz for an unchaperoned encounter with your student. To this end, the objective of the assignment must be specific, and the student should be able to access it no matter what computer or browser she uses. If you have done this, you have created a learning object. In this session we hope to give you some tools for recognizing learning objects and show a means by which you can preserve, organize, reuse, and share them.

  3. You create all kinds of instruments for your courses already – these might include text based items such as . . . There are also multimedia based objects such as recorded lectures converted to MP3, diagrams, Captivate-based tutorials or interactive exercises and tools.
  4. But the distinctive characteristic of a learning object from an instructional technology standpoint is that it is reusable; to ensure this, it must be modular, extensible, interoperable, durable and platform-independent.

  7. Is created for the purpose of achieving a specific learning outcome – its content is inherently instructional.And now I’d like to turn the podium over to Professor Jorge Balbas from Mathematics, to talk about some of his learning objects.
  8. A learning object represents a considerable investment of training, time, and resources – you want to have it ready at hand to use again, and you may want to share it with others. You can store it on your desktop, or on your personal folder on the U-drive, or your web folder on the W drive. But in the first two instances, no one can get to it except you, and only if you’re logged into the VPN or on campus, and in the third, no one can get to it unless it’s linked from a public page somewhere. And if you have multiple objects, searching for it may pose some difficulty.The Learning Object Repository is a central archive where learning objects can be organized, searched, where data integrity is maintained, where your copyright is explicit, and where your learning object can be accessed at a permanent location.
  9. (scholarworks demo follows here)The Learning Object Repository was established to organize, preserve, and make searchable the learning objects created by CSUN faculty. The objects are “wrapped” in descriptive records that make them easy to find, and are preserved at permanent URLs called handle.A record: Title, Author, handle, description and file(s). Submission: we will do a practice learning object submission using some materials Professor Balbas gave me.Title: the wave equationKeywords: Partial Differential Equations, wave equation, D'Alambert solution, fluid simulation(3) math496_lab4.pdf -- a sample lab assignment on the 2d wave equation(4) animations -- a directory with .gif animations of different solutions corresponding to different initial/boundary conditions and an .avi animation of a dumped 2d wave(5) cpp_code -- a directory with the C++ code written to calculate the solution and create frames for the 2d wave animation (uses open source PIXIE libraries)(7) pdf_src -- a directory with source files and images for the lecture notes and lab assignment
