In early 2010 central south Chile experienced a Mw = 8.8 earthquake and large
tsunami waves that devastated areas on the Chilean Pacific coast, nearby offshore
islands, and areas near the epicenter. In addition to the tsunami, the earthquake had
many other geological consequences including aftershocks, terrestrial and submarine
land sliding, elevation changes, and a gravity shift. The purpose of this paper is to
discuss and analyze the earthquake, its consequences, the resulting damages, and
mitigation.

The main event caused both terrestrial and submarine land sliding to occur in the
area. Around 30 slides were delineated, with a majority of them being submarine
(Volker, et.al., 2011). These submarine slides were confined to the walls of various
submarine canyons, and were characterized as thin transitional slides retrograding

was committed for feeble mindedness. This was not a medical decision, but the
doctor s belief that Carrie was an illegitimate child. Carrie was placed into foster care
at the age of three.

Originally published in 1975, Nora Ephron s essay The Boston Photographs is both
still relevant and controversial almost forty years later. It deals with the series of
three photographs that were published in newspapers across the country. The most
important one shows a mother and child falling off a collapsed fire escape. Both have
their limbs outstretched. If both had survived, maybe the reaction would have been
different. The child survived by landing miraculously on the mother, but the mother
ended up dying. The question on everyone s mind was why the photographer, Stanley
Forman, decided to take the photographs instead of trying to help the falling... Show

the environment, so they are a sustainable method to produce energy. The options for
renewable energy are solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal.
Why should Earth abandon the systems that they have in place at the moment? The
reason behind adopting renewable energy is because the system that is in place
today is unsustainable. It is unsustainable for many reasons. Fossil fuels, which
include coal, oil, and natural gas, are the main source of energy in today s world, but
bring a wide variety of adverse effects (Cooper, Renewable Energy).
Burning these fossil fuels releases harmful pollutants into the environment, with the
main one being carbon dioxide. The release of carbon dioxide is the primary cause of
global warming, which in itself is a serious threat to Earth. Along with causing global

To analyze the effectiveness of the treatment before and after the surgical
revascularization intervention procedures in PAD patients who may have
microvascular dysfunction, we studied the change in oxygen concentration at the
walls of capillaries.
Oxygen transfer in a vascular network that is essential for the tissue metabolism
takes place at the level of microvasculature and capillaries through convection and
diffusion. Oxygen delivery or convective flow of oxygen to the capillaries and
oxygen extraction or diffusive transport of oxygen from hemoglobin (Hb) to tissue
cells are the two limiting factors associated with oxygen transfer in a vascular
network (Pittman, 2000).
In order to quantify the transfer rate of oxygen from capillaries to the surrounding
tissues, micro circulation in the vascular network was modeled in a virtual simulation
software using the chemical reaction module. Two mechanisms associated with the
oxygen transfer; oxygen from the blood is transferred to the inner wall through
convection and from inner capillary wall to the surrounding tissue via diffusion
phenomena, are shown in Figure 1.

A Multi Scale Optimization Framework
CO2 is an important greenhouse gas (GHG) and emission of CO2 to the
atmosphere needs to be reduced in order to mitigate climate change. It is
imperative to device ways of proper CO2 utilization and storage. CO2 can be
sequestered geologically as well as there are other ways of CO2 utilization which
can be economically viable in places where geological storage is not the most
optimal solution. In the present study, the primary focus is on the integration
potential of two GHG abatement options, which are geological sequestration of
CO2 and biological sequestration of CO2 via microalgae growth, harvest and
conversion to bioproducts. There are several ways of microalgae conversion to an
array of products, as discussed in the previous sections. The present study aims to
quantify the techno economic tradeoffs and optimize the entire supply chain of
CO2 utilization to ensure the most economically feasible alternative of CO2
usage. A multi scale optimization framework is proposed. The mathematical
framework is provided in Figure 2. The model takes into account the design of
pipeline network for CO2 transport, different processing routes for microalgae
conversion as well as CO2 geological storage. A case study is considered to assess
the optimal design of GHG capture, storage and/or utilization for the state of Texas
in United States. Such an effort will help inform decision and policy makers the
optimal pathway of CO2 storage and utilization procedures for a particular location.

school suffered with body image issues because their perception of beauty is what

Realway takes high fashion styles and makes them practical for all women, they
even use everyday women in the column instead of models (Verily). There are even
individuals who are taking a stand. In an article for ABC News, Davis and Millman
talk about Julia Bluhm, a 14 year old from Waterville, Maine, who collected 25,000
signatures on her petition to have Seventeen produce one spread per month that does
not use photo shopped images (Davis and Millman). Bluhm s petition and Verily are
showing the media that they want to see real and accurate representations of women.

Abstract: Volcanic eruptions can be disastrous and deadly. It is, therefore, important
to look back at prior eruptions and compare them to present eruptions in order to
draw conclusions on what could be done to mitigate loss of life and destruction. The
eruption of Mount Vesuviusin 79 AD on Pompeii and surrounding areas proved to be
catastrophic because of the location of the volcano and especially since citizens were
not aware that an active volcano was in their midst. By examining the series of
events that took place at Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and comparing them to the
impacts and forecasting of present day volcanism, one could draw better conclusions

How Interns Are Influenced By The Internship
The purpose of the proposed study is to explore how interns are influenced by the
internship in regards to their career choice. The data will be collected from the
three different field sites; Higbee and Associates, Legal Aid Society of Orange
County and Public Defenders Office of Santa Ana with assessing total of 50 60
interns who will be participating in these three different field sites. Using the
previous studies as a guideline I will use the combination of interviews and
questionnaires to assess the attitudes of the interns regarding the before and after the
internship. After assessing the interns the proposed study will conduct a follow up
study with the interns after six years to see the impact of the internship on the career

specifically it wanted to asses the impact of a law firm internship on the work ethic
and values of future lawyers. The study was conducted with 52 students from the
SMU university who are currently involved in private law firms. The empirical study

survey, which consisted of multiple choice, ranking type, rating type and open ended

The Ethics Of Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics is a normative theory whose foundations were laid by Aristotle. This
theory approaches normative ethics in substantially different ways than
consequentialist and deontological theories. In this essay, I will contrast and compare
virtue ethics to utilitarianism, ethical egoism, and Kantianism to demonstrate these
differences. There is one fundamental aspect of virtue ethics that sets it apart from
the other theories I will discuss. For the sake of brevity and to avoid redundancy, I
will address it separately. This is the fundamental difference between acting ethically
within utilitarianism, egoism, and Kantianism. And being ethical within virtue
ethics. The other theories seek to define the ethics of actions while virtue ethics

I chose character Maggie in Everyday Use for your grandmamma by Alice Walker.
Maggie is a character of purity and that is not compromised by selfishness or
complex emotional needs. When she was a child severely burned in a house fire,

lives in a house remains almost no intact by the outside world, and is protected by

What was freedom to the peoples of Colonial Virginia? It all started in 1619
through 1629, when Virginia was a very popular destination for over 3,570
migrants who were coming over from England. Most of these young men in where
in their early twenties, who had signed a contract as Indentured Servants who were
in search of freedom of wealth and riches. Most however did not get that chance,
most of the migrant servants died within their years of hard labor due to
waterborne diseases. After years of being pressed inland the diseases has seemed to
slow by 1662, due to not drinking the contaminated seawater. The Servants who had
completed their sentences were now young, homeless, and armed due to agreeing to
be apart of the Militia before signing their contracts for America. These young men
who were called Freedmen retaliated in 1676, given the name Bacon s Rebellion,
who was lead by Nathaniel Bacon.

Alice Walker The Flowers
The 1920s were filled with segregation and discrimination against the African
American community. Alice Walker, the author of The Flowers, wrote this story to
the African Americans to remind them of historic sacrifices that were made to better
future lives. In the story we see the main character, Myop, on a journey as she loses
her innocence when she comes across the skeleton of a dead man. Walker uses a
historical lens, and helps the reader remember the tragic, violent events of the 1920s.
Through the use of the audience, structure, tone, symbolism, and allusion Walker is
able to further prove that this story is a historical lens.Walker wrote this story for the
African American community and it reminds them of the awful historical events...
In the beginning of the story Walker sets a peaceful, content, and even carefree
tone, but then it suddenly changes to an eerie or depressing type of tone. The shift
from being cheery to dismal sucks the reader in, it hooks the reader and makes them
feel and contemplate the story. She felt light and good in the warm sun. (Walker)
Through the description of how Myop felt towards the beginning and describing her
innocence helps set the tone for the beginning, but once Myop wanders further into
the woods away from the comfort of her home everything changes. ...the strangeness
of the land made it not as pleasant as her usual haunts. It seemed gloomy in the little
cove...The air was damp, the silence was close and deep. (Paragraph 5) The words
that aid in describing the changing atmosphere Myop encountered assists in
reminding the audience. Right before Myop steps on the man she is caught in an
eerie or strange atmosphere and attempts to go back to the easy going environment of
the morning, which is seen through the shifts in tone. This helps the reader feel and
understand what Myop felt and helps them remember the many sacrifices made.
Walker also uses symbolism to help inform the audience of the prices once
