Terminology
• Circulation – Movement to and fro or around something, especially that of
fluid in a closed system.
• Hits – Bring one's hand or a tool or weapon into contact with (someone or
something) quickly and forcefully.
• Box Office Figures – A box office or ticket office is a place where tickets are
sold to the public for admission to an event.
• Ratings – A classification or ranking of someone or something based on a
comparative assessment of their quality, standard, or performance.
• Sales – The exchange of a commodity for money; the action of selling
something.
Primary Research
• Definition – Researched by yourself, where the audience and the
researcher are in direct contact.
• Advantages – It is definitely up to date as it has just been collected.
• Disadvantages – You will not have the same answers.
• Example – Questionnaires/Surveys, Interviews, Focus Groups.
Secondary Research
• Definition – Studying previously undertaken research, using existing
research in your own work.
• Advantages – Easier to find it then when you have to find a person to ask
them.
• Disadvantages - Might not be up to date or could give false information.
• Example - Internet research, library research, archive research.
Quantitative Research
• Definition – Expressed or expressible as a quantity, research that you can
quantify/measure and put into percentages, fractions and numbers.
• Advantages – you get numbers (percentages, ratings) as answer and that is
more precise information rather then getting a “lot”.
• Disadvantages – It might not be so exact which makes the given
information false and not useful.
• Example -
Qualitative Research
• Definition – Research that goes more in depth- finding out
opinions/beliefs/reasoning, presented as full text or discussions, makes
the person have to reflect and expand on their answer.
• Advantages – You get more details about the topic you have asked.
• Disadvantages – You might get unnecessary facts about the topic.
• Example -
Audience Research
• Definition – Finding out about who consumes a product.
• Advantages – able to find out likes and dislikes of audience.
• Disadvantages – It can take a long time to set-up your research. You
then have to gather your results and then present them, finding the
right people to ask can sometimes be a challenge.
• Example –
Market Research
• Definition - Finding out about the market place where a product is
sold.
• Advantages - They work fairly well. Gathering data from traditional
sources gets the job done, even if it’s not completely outstanding.
Consider the reasons firms fall back onto traditional methods again
and again.
• Disadvantages – The disadvantages are that the collected research
from the different sources may not be all reliable sometimes the
sources may give false information on the internet a big find of false
information mainly comes from the Wikipedia website as it can be
edited by anyone and everyone if false information is given then all
research and topic would need to be rethought as it may be
incorrect.
• Example -
Production Research
• Definition - Finding information and resources required to produce a
piece of media.
• Advantages – If the audience research goes well and the market
analysis is favourable a media company might decide to launch a
new product in that market.
• Disadvantages – The information they’ve got when they’ve
researched might not be valid so the product will not be what they
were aiming for.
• Example -
Terminology
• Objective – Research that is not influenced by personal feelings or
opinions.
• Subjective – Research that has been influenced by personal feelings or
opinions.
• Valid – Whether the research proposed is able to answer the intended
outcome/question.
• Reliable – Research that produces accurate and consistent results.
