The war in Vietnam lasted from 1957 to 1975 and involved major military participation from the United States and support from the Soviet Union and China for North Vietnam. The war began as an internal conflict in South Vietnam but grew to include North Vietnam and other international powers. By the end of 1965, there were around 185,000 American troops in South Vietnam supporting its government, and at the peak of US involvement over 500,000 American troops were deployed in an effort to defeat North Vietnamese and National Liberation Front forces through large-scale search and destroy operations. Despite massive US bombing campaigns and troop deployments, the US and South Vietnam were ultimately unable to gain a military victory, resulting in America withdrawing from the war in 1973 and a Communist victory

2. The war in Vietnam - one of the largest military conflicts of the
second half of the XX century. It occupies a significant place
in the recent history of Vietnam, as well as the United States and
the Soviet Union, which played in it important role.
The war began as a civilian in southern Vietnam. Later in the war
North Vietnam was involved, and later received the support of
China and the Soviet Union.

4. March 2, 1965 the US began regular bombing of North Vietnam - air
operation "Rolling Thunder" - the longest bombing campaign of the US
aviation after World War II.
March 8, 1965 for the protection of strategically important airfield Danang in
South Vietnam, two Marine battalions were sent. Since then, the US became
the participant of the Civil War in Vietnam, giving it a new character. By the
end of 1965 in South Vietnam was about 185 thousand American troops in
the two full divisions and several brigades.
In the next three years contingent was significantly increased, reaching
540,000 people at the peak of the war.
The first major battle involving US ground forces took place in August 1965 (
"Operation Starlight") in the tactical zone I casing. A few more battles took
place in the autumn, the most significant of these was the Battle of Ia Drang
in November, in which both sides participated force equivalent to the division.
Since mid-1965 to mid-1969 the US forces carried out a large-scale offensive
in South Vietnam, aimed at the detection and destruction of large units and
units of the NLF and the North Vietnamese Army.
