The Renaissance and Humanism - and Hamlet

  • 1. The Renaissance 1350 - 1660 -What characterised this period ? - Hamlet was written in the beginning of the 17th Century - during the Renaissance period -
  • 2. What was the Renaissance? • The period after the Middle Ages. • The beginning of the “modern world” • New interest in old stuff, like Greece & Rome • Changes in perceptions about art, religion, literature, education, social and cultural values
  • 3. Where did the renaissance Start? • Began in Italy • Later spread north to Germany and England
  • 4. The ENGLISH Renaissance • Renaissance man was interested in the early Christian period • The figures in Renaissance art were more realistic.
  • 5. Renaissance • Interested in Greek & Roman culture (“the classics”) • Use of perspective in paintings • Believed in humanism • Used critical method of study
  • 6. What’s Humanism? Hint: What word is inside the word? • Idea started in the Renaissance that people have value, worth and autonomy • Middle Ages = Only God can do good (and bad) • Renaissance = Humans can do good and can control their own lives • Liberal arts education (still here today)
