1. THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF THE
PHILIPPINES IN THE 19TH
CENTURY

2. The Philippines in the nineteenth century was
under the ONE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
established by the Spain.
Thus, for the first time in history, the country
was became united as one nation and called
“Filipinas”.
12. Local Government: Provincial
Alcaldia Corrigimiento
Alcalde Mayor Corregidor
Though the were less paid, the were given a privileges
such as the INDULTO DE COMERCIO or the right to
participate in the Galleon Trade.
13. Local Government: Provincial
■ The ALCALDIA, led by the Alcalde Mayor govern the provinces
Their duties are:
1. Represent the Spanish King and the Governor General
2. Manage the day-to-day operations of the provincial
government.
3. implement the laws and supervise the collection of taxes.
14. Local Government: Provincial
■ The Corregimiento, led by the Corregidor govern the provinces that
were not entirely under Spanish control.
Example of Philippine Corregimiento Provinces are Bataan and Mindoro
15. Local Government: City
■ Larger towns became cities called AYUNTAMIENTO. It became the center of
tradeand industry.
■ They had a city council called the CABILLO which composed of the following:
1. Alcalde (Mayor)
2. Regidores (Councillors)
3. Alguacil mayor (Police Chief)
4. Escribando (Secretary)

■ Each province was divided into several towns or pueblos headed by
GOBERNADORCILLOS (Little Governor)
■ Their main duties are efficient governance and tax collection.
■ There are four Lieutenants aided the Gobernadorcillo
1. Teniente Mayor (Chief Lieutenant)
2. Teniente de Policia (Police lieutenant)
3. Teniente de Sementeras (Lieutenant of the Fields)
4. Teniente de Ganados (Lieutenant of the Livestock)
