4. WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT
. Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) worked
out a mathematical wave theory of light in
1678, and published it in his Treatise on
light in 1690. He proposed that light was
emitted in all directions as a series of waves
in a medium called the Luminiferous ether.

-In 1900, Max Planck proposed his quantum
hypothesis to explain blackbody radiation,
stating that energy is quantized or discreate
and that it is proportional to the frequency
produced by the oscillation in a blackbody.
5 years later , Planck’s idea was applied by
Albert Einstein in his explanation of the
photoelectric effect.
Einstein stated that light is made up of
energy packets called quanta, which came
to be known as the photon--- the particle of
