Water Cycle
The water cycle describes how water is transferred and changed among the Earth's atmosphere, land and oceans. The water cycle involves evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection and runoff, with about 97% of Earth's water found in oceans and the amount of water on Earth staying constant over time as it changes forms and locations.

Diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood sugar levels. There are two main types - type 1 caused by the immune system attacking insulin-producing cells, and type 2 which occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore insulin. Risk factors include family history, age, weight, and race/ethnicity. Symptoms include excessive thirst, hunger, urination and fatigue. Treatment involves diet, exercise, medication and insulin as needed to control blood sugar levels and prevent short and long term complications affecting organs like the eyes, kidneys and heart. Current research focuses on prediction, prevention and management of diabetes as well as its complications.
Student Work - DID
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a psychiatric diagnosis where a person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities, each with their own memories and patterns of behavior. DID is caused by severe childhood trauma like abuse and neglect. The child dissociates or splits their identity as a coping mechanism. Symptoms include memory loss, depression, hallucinations, and an inability to account for certain events. Treatment focuses on psychotherapy to help integrate the different personalities. DID is difficult to treat and prognosis depends on comorbid conditions and ability to remove oneself from abusive situations.
Swine Flu
Swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by influenza A virus that has recently infected humans. It first emerged in Mexico in early 2009 and quickly spread globally in a pandemic. Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu but it can lead to pneumonia or death in some cases. Researchers are working to develop a vaccine and contain its spread through public health measures while learning more about its origins and transmission.
Turners Syndrome
Turner syndrome is a genetic condition that affects development in girls caused by a missing or partial X chromosome. It was first described in 1938 by Dr. Henry Turner. Common characteristics include short stature, ovarian dysfunction leading to infertility, and heart defects. Diagnosis involves chromosome analysis from amniocentesis or blood tests. Treatment may include growth hormone, estrogen therapy, and assisted reproduction. Research continues on treatments and managing associated health problems throughout life.
Student Work Rett Syndrome
Rett syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, primarily in girls. It is caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene and begins with normal development followed by loss of motor and communication skills. Symptoms include loss of speech, hand movements, irregular breathing patterns, and cognitive impairments. While there is no cure, treatment aims to manage symptoms through physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Research continues to study the genes involved to better understand the condition.
Student Work Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thickened, making it harder for the heart to pump blood. It is usually inherited and symptoms can include chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, and palpitations. The condition makes individuals prone to arrhythmias and heart failure. While medications and procedures like implantable defibrillators can help treatment, individuals with a family history of sudden cardiac death are at highest risk of complications from HCM.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome is a rare condition characterized by deformities of the hands and feet (ectrodactyly), abnormalities in skin, hair, teeth and nails (ectodermal dysplasia), and cleft lip and/or palate. It can be caused by genetic mutations and affects development of the ectoderm layer in utero. People with this syndrome may experience physical challenges and social isolation due to the visible differences and associated health issues. There is no cure, but treatment aims to address specific symptoms through surgery, dental care, and managing other ectodermal abnormalities.

While there is no cure for emphysema, treatments can help slow its progression by managing symptoms and avoiding further lung damage from smoking or air pollution. Physical exams are used to diagnose emphysema based on a patient's medical history and symptoms like shortness of breath.
