servant!" 7 David said to him, "Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the
sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather
Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly." 8 Again he prostrated himself and said,
"What is your servant, that you should regard a dead dog like me?" 9 Then the king
called Saul's servant Ziba and said to him, "All that belonged to Saul and to all his house
I have given to your master's grandson. 10 "You and your sons and your servants shall
cultivate the land for him, and you shall bring in the produce so that your master's
grandson may have food; nevertheless Mephibosheth your master's grandson shall eat

• 2 David sees Bathsheba bathing from his roof
• 3-5 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, "Is this not Bathsheba, the
daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 4 David sent messengers and took her, and when
she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she
returned to her house. 5 The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, "I am
pregnant."
• 6-10 David sends for Uriah, sends him to his wife, hoping to cover his sin, but Uriah was too faithful
to his purpose and his men and sleeps at the door to the David’s palace
• 11 11 Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my
lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to
eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this
thing."
• 14 David writes a letter to Joab, which will be delivered by Uriah
9. • 15 15 He had written in the letter, saying, "Place Uriah in the front line of the fiercest
battle and withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and die."
• 16-17 Joab obeys and Uriah dies in battle

displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle against the
city stronger and overthrow it'; and so encourage him."
• 26 26 Now when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned
for her husband. 27 When the time of mourning was over, David sent and brought her to
his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had
done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
10. • 1-4 1 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said, "There were two men in one city,
the one rich and the other poor. 2 "The rich man had a great many flocks and herds. 3 "But the poor man
had nothing except one little ewe lambWhich he bought and nourished; And it grew up together with him
and his children. It would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom,And was like a daughter
to him. 4 "Now a traveler came to the rich man,And he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own
herd,To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him; Rather he took the poor man's ewe lamb and
prepared it for the man who had come to him."
• 5-6 5 Then David's anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, surely
the man who has done this deserves to die. 6 "He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he
did this thing and had no compassion."
• 7-9 7 Nathan then said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'It is I who anointed
you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 'I also gave you your master's
house and your master's wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had
been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these! 9 'Why have you despised the word
of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken
his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
11. • 10-15 10 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and
have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' 11 "Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil
against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your
companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. 12 'Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this
thing before all Israel, and under the sun.'" 13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD."
And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die. 14 "However,
because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also
that is born to you shall surely die." 15 So Nathan went to his house. Then the LORD struck the child that
Uriah's widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.
• 16-23 David fasts and sleeps on the floor for 7 days, hoping the Lord would spare the child, but the child
dies
• 24-25 Solomon is born and the Lord loved him
12. 1 Be gracious to me, O God, according toYour lovingkindness;According to the greatness ofYour compassion
blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquityAnd cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I
know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4 AgainstYou,You only, I have sinned And done
what is evil inYour sight, So thatYou are justified whenYou speak And blameless whenYou judge. 5 Behold, I
was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the
innermost being, And in the hidden partYou will make me know wisdom. 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I
shall be clean;Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the
bones whichYou have broken rejoice. 9 HideYour face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create
in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away fromYour
presence And do not takeYour Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy ofYour salvationAnd sustain
me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressorsYour ways,And sinners will be converted toYou.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness,O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing ofYour
righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips,That my mouth may declareYour praise. 16 ForYou do not delight in
sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God,You will not despise. 18 ByYour favor do good to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem. 19 ThenYou will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt
offering; Then young bulls will be offered onYour altar.
13. • God’s name was blasphemed by David’s sin
• Romans 2:23-24 (NASB) 23 You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God?
24 For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMEDAMONGTHE GENTILES BECAUSEOFYOU," just as it is written.
• There are always consequences for our sins
• 2 Samuel 12:11-12 (NASB) 11 "Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own
household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with
your wives in broad daylight. 12 'Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the
sun.'"
• Galatians 6:7-8 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For
the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will
from the Spirit reap eternal life.
• In Grace, God forgives all our sin, but He does not remove the consequences
• The Law prescribed death for David, but God’s grace supercedes the Law Leviticus 20:10 (NASB) 10 'If there is a
man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the
adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
• 2 Samuel 12:13-14 (NASB) 13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to
David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die. 14 "However, because by this deed you have
given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die."
• Any and all sin can be forgiven
14. • Don’t allow sin to be so great that it becomes a parenthetical in your life
• 1 Kings 15:5 (NASB) 5 because David did what was right in the sight of the LORD,
and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his
life, except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.
• Don’t take grace as a license to sin or as a mechanism to discount the
severity of sin
• 2 Samuel 12:9 (NASB) 9 'Why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil
in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his
wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons ofAmmon.
• Accept responsibility for your own sins and repent, recognizing the full evil
of it
