God is Faithful! (part 3) Demonstrating Faithfulness to My GodDave Stewart
Jesus’ second example of true righteousness is exemplified by the prohibition of adultery and divorce, both of which the Scribes and Pharisees had relaxed, failing to understand that the problem was in the heart. True righteousness understands that this is really about faithfulness. In marriage we covenant to be one flesh, adultery violently violates that relationship, as does divorce. In this less we also consider ways that we can actively demonstrate our faithfulness to our God.
God approves of the man who is pure in heart. Men such as David and Jesus remind us that this means we are to be utterly sincere and wholly true to our God. Our prayer, like David, is that He would unite our hearts to fear Him.
This is a compilation of articles on the topic of Holiness. Issues covered include: 3 kinds of satanic traps a believer should avoid; Holy to the Lord; Leaving the crowd; Living a distinct life; Living by God's word; Not following your sensuality; Pathway to sanctification; Sex and the testaments and Tongue control.
Breaking points, we all have them and must learn how to handle them. In this lesson we examine Moses. Both audio and slides can be enjoyed at www.cmcoc.org Sermon by: Brian Birdow
Have you ever wondered if you are praying for the right thing? In this lesson we discuss the will of God. Both audio and slides can be enjoyed at www.cmcoc.org Sermon by: Brian Birdow
Knowledge makes people arrogant. This concept seems to be completely different from the world’s thinking. If I learn more, then I should know the breadth of knowledge. I should be like a learned person, and I should be more humble. But why the Bible said so, if this is a truth that violates the rules of the world. In this chapter, let us carefully look for the truth of the Bible for detail analysis.
This is a collection of some of the best writings on the circumcision of the Holy Spirit in heart of the believer. This replaces the Old Testament law forever. This is a topic seldom studied by Christians, but it should be, for it is a beautiful truth.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

Editor's Notes
9:00
9:01
9:02
Last week we discussed ways that Satan can attack the church
He attacked all the early churches
Often using those who claimed they were God’s chosen people – including Jews
He still attacks the churches today – done best from the pulpit
We discussed Paul’s concern for the church in the midst of persecution
Paul was thankful for the faithfulness of the Thessalonians
Paul was committed to the continued growth of the church
The next step was to help them with what they were lacking
9:05
This week we will focus on the Sanctification Process
Chapter 4 is broken down into PLEASING GOD and AVOIDING SEXUAL IMPURITY
9:07
9:08
9:09
Finally then
The conclusion of chapter 3
So that Paul, Silas and Timothy may complete what is lacking in the faith of the Thessalonians (verse 3:10)
Brethren
Paul is no longer speaking of them as his children
Some ways we are brothers in Christ
Other ways we are parents or children
As brethren, they are fellow believers in Jesus Christ
Brothers who suffered with Paul for God’s purpose
We request and exhort you
We ask AND we encourage or even beg you in the Lord
in the Lord Jesus
Paul adds weight to his words by reminding them of the source of their instruction
As you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God
Walk = “to conduct yourselves”
Paul and Silas and Timothy already gave them instruction on how to live
By example (Prayer, Proclamation, and PATTERN)
The Thessalonians know already how to live to please God and they have the direct example of Paul, Silas, and Timothy
How should we walk so as to please God?
With our hearts right
With a desire to serve him
With repentance from sins
With a full trust of him
Walking as a disciple
Just as you actually do walk
This text is bracketed
Usually bracketed text is NOT in the oldest manuscripts
In this case it is, but was not in some of the more recent manuscripts
In either case, we know that the Thessalonians were living as the example
That you excel still more
However good you or others think you are, there is no perfection except for Jesus
We are all incomplete in our walk
Thus, there is always room for improvement
9:14
You know what commandments we gave you
Paraggelia = command or instruction
By the authority of the Lord Jesus
Literally “through the Lord”
Even though Paul refers to them as “brothers” in Christ, he is reminding them that the Lord spoke to them through himself plus Silas and Timothy
This helps prepare them for where he is going – deeper into their way of living
9:19
For this is the will of God, your sanctification
Since God chose them and called them, His desire is their sanctification
Sanctification = the process of becoming Holy
God’s desire is our Holiness
Lev 20:26 'Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.
Deut 7:6 = Deut 14:2 "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Romans 6:22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
That is that you abstain from sexual immorality – THE PROBLEM
Is Paul equating their sanctification to their abstinence from sexual immorality??
It is not that abstinence from sexual immorality is the only thing necessary for sanctification, but it is NECESSARY for sanctification ie. to become holy
What sexual immorality was present in their day?
Fornication was part of the status quo in the day
Sexual lusts were normal in the day
What was immoral to believers was not immoral to others
Morality was RELATIVE – sound familiar? more in verse 5
Anyone here have a problem with sexual immorality?
Pornography?
Adultery – physical or mental
9:22
That each of you know how to possess his own vessel
Vessel can mean “wife” or “body”
The context fits the latter
Where does sin begin?
In the mind per James 1:14-15 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
We must first control our thoughts
How can we control our thoughts?
Avoid situations and circumstances that will cause temptation
Don’t go to places where you will be tempted
Don’t look at things that will cause temptation
Don’t read, watch, or listen to things that will cause temptation
Instead, fill your mind with the things of God
Read His word
Listen to sermons
Do His works that He has set before you
Surround yourself with fellow believers
In sanctification and honor
When we avoid such temptations, we have honor and progress in our Holiness
9:27
Not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God
Gentiles here is simply those who do not know God
The behavior of those Gentiles in Macedonia and Achaia was lustful passion
Rom 1:26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,
1 Cor 5:1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife.
Christians MUST not behave like the world
Rom 6:19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
If we act as slaves to GOD, then we will continue in our process of sanctification
We are called to be different from non-believers
9:35
In that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter
The context indicates that this has to do with sexual immorality
Adultery
Rape
Incest?
Homosexuality?
There was a lot of history of sexual immorality in the OT
Judah and Tamar
Rape of Dinah and subsequent deceit of the sons of Judah against the men of Shechem
Sodom and Gomorrah
The prophet and his concubine who was raped and murdered so he cut her up in 12 pieces
David and Bathsheba
Herod and Herodias
It also can be taken to mean a fellow believer who influences his brother to transgress and sin
1 Cor 6:7-8 7 Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? 8 On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud. You do this even to your brethren.
Lance has told stories about churches he preached in where one of the elders was in sexual sin and the other elders looked the other way.
This became a cancer in the church
Because the Lord is the avenger in all things
God is the one who avenges
Ps 99:8 O LORD our God, You answered them; You were a forgiving God to them, And yet an avenger of their evil deeds.
After Saul went into the cave, David said to Saul in 1 Sam 24:12 "May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD avenge me on you; but my hand shall not be against you.
Ps 94:1-3 1 O LORD, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth! 2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth, Render recompense to the proud. 3 How long shall the wicked, O LORD, How long shall the wicked exult?
Heb 10:30-31 30 For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY." And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE." 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Just as we told you before and solemnly warned you
1 Th 2:11 – Paul reminded the Thessalonians about how he taught them while with them, including the warnings
The sentence indicates a constant testimony to the Thessalonians while he was with them
The gospel message is incomplete without a solemn warning.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
The penalty for sin is death
This death is eternal
This death is at the hand of a holy God
This death is the Wrath of God the avenger
Of course the good news of the Gospel is that Jesus took our sins
Those who’s hearts are not changed are not really saved, even though they may look and act like Christians on the outside. They will still suffer God’s wrath
9:45
For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity
WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?
To serve God
To glorify God
To go into all the earth and make disciples, teaching them all the Lord commanded
There is a sarcasm in a “purpose of impurity”
But in sanctification
We are to become more and more like the Lord
What is the process of sanctification?
1 Peter 1:13-16 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
Prepare your mind
Keep sober in spirit
Fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you
Be obedient
Do not be conformed to the former lusts
Be holy in all your behavior
9:55
He who rejects this is not rejecting man, but the God
Rejecting Paul’s words = rejection of God
Paul’s words then had God’s authority behind them
Paul’s words now are part of the cannon of scripture
Rejecting ANY part of the bible = rejection of God
Who gives His Holy Spirit to you
Reminder of the down payment we have in HOPE with the presence of the Holy Spirit
Romans 5:1-5 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
2 Cor 1:22 God sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.
Reminder of the trinity
“His Holy Spirit” is not out of ownership, but as a part of God
