As great as it is when people in the Old Testament hear an audible voice from God telling them what to do, that is not always the way God communicates now. In Three Different Chapters, we have three different stories of ways God communicates with David, with the purpose of helping David center His life around God.

This account of the foolish and evil Nabal and the beautiful Abigail who has good understanding is sandwiched between two episodes (1 Sam 24, 26) in which David spares King Saul's life. The placement is purposeful. Given the number of parallels between Nabal and Saul, the author(s) are likely engaging in "narrative analogy" -- making a point without explicitly stating it...

Sin, judgment, mercy, hope seth g april 14 2019Pacific Church
As we finish our study of King David, we will see the sin of the people and of David; we will see how Satan reacts, and how God deals with the whole mess, both in judgment and in mercy.

Jesus has been called the "Great Physician." We think of His miracles of healing. But those miracles of healing our physical bodies point to a far greater miracle--the healing of our heart and soul. He doesn't just mean physical life and death. He points to something greater--spiritual life and death, both in this world and the next.

We can spend a lifetime looking for that which will fill our souls. We can look far and wide, with people, with events, with experiences, with acquisitions, and with just about anything else you of which comes to mind. But we will never touch the deepest parts of our soul until we find what Jesus called "living water." We will experience more of that living water as we become dispensers of living water, just like the woman we'll study this week!

In John 3, Jesus teaches Nicodemus, a committed leader of Judaism, about the necessity of being born again. John 3 also lays out God's rescue mission of men and women who are lost, guilty, and without hope, in need of rescue! But most folks aren't interested, not believing they need rescuing, and certainly not interested in the remedy for sin.

We so often hear the story of Mary this time of year, but it’s just as easy to gloss over the extreme cost it would have been to a young girl, to find herself graced with this ‘favor’ from God. What did it cost her in terms of her life’s plans? What did it cost her socially, with her family, with friends and neighbors? What does radical obedience cost us?

In spite of the mess of the world, Jesus is King. He reigns, even here, even amidst the rubble of sin and the rubble of people’s lives. It is that assurance that provides us peace and a soul that can rest in the often fiery and unpredictable world in which we live. It matters that Jesus is King!

It is likely during this time of COVID, that you have experienced a heightened sense of despondency. You've also likely experienced a heightened sense of loneliness, isolation, and being disconnected. Jesus experienced all of this as well. That He has experienced these things is meant to comfort you, lift you, and carry you along in during times like these. It's the HUMANITY of Jesus that surprises us with rest for our souls.

The Christmas message clearly spells out the deity of Christ, but this is not just a theological issue with which to ponder. It is meant to jolt us out of our spiritual stupor (sleepiness) to obeying "Jesus Christ our LORD." If obedience in our daily lives is replaced by right theology, then the boat has sailed without us.

What christ offers, what we offer p 1 seth gatchell november 22 2020Pacific Church
Beneath people's veneer are hidden questions. "Do I matter? Do I matter to anyone? Does someone really care about me?" People hunger and thirst for real "life," that sense of satisfaction that comes from being deeply connected with God and others. That is what Christ offers us, and He offers this real "life" through us to others! What we all want to know, is how does this happen?
This week we are looking at understanding and interpreting the Bible. The Bible is composed of 66 Books in multiple genres written over thousands of years. It can be daunting, and sometimes hard to understand. This week we are taking a few steps to try and make it a little easier to understand.
Jeremiah was known as "the weeping prophet." In spite of his faithful and bold preaching, he watched helplessly as his beloved nation continued to slide toward destruction. Jeremiah paid a terrible price for his message. He faced ridicule, scorn, torture and suffering. What was most heart-breaking was watching the Babylonians break through the city walls of Jerusalem, burn the city to the ground, turn stone buildings into rubble, and drive 90% of the people into exile. IT DIDN’T HAVE TO END THIS WAY.

Work economy goverment our biblical worldview part 8 seth g october 25 2020Pacific Church
Work is work, and work takes work. Work is another introduction into the realities of life. But work is not just about work. There is the interplay of economics and government. It is important to have what the bible calls "understanding," not just about work, economics and government to have "understanding" about how these three entities should work together.
Gender our biblical worldview part 7 seth g october 18 2020Pacific Church
In our day there is growing confusion about gender. There is a secular movement of thinking that seeks to minimize or obliterate any differences between genders. In this secular way of thinking, gender is something that one feels or identifies as. This is like leaving a great sailing ship on the high seas without sails and a rudder. It will be carried along wherever the current wishes, adrift on the open seas. The unintended consequences of this thinking is to create greater confusion for young people who already struggle with their gender and confusing feelings of their identity, but there is a wondrous design to complementary gender that seeks to build intimacy in a marriage, deeper relationships with people, and reflects the wonder of our Trinitarian God.
Our biblical worldview part 6 seth g october 11 2020Pacific Church
What does the bible say about marriage? Up until 15-20 years ago this was not a "controversial" topic. Everyone knew the answer. Our secular culture continues to send its tsunami waves at our Judeo-Christian heritage, causing great confusion. How are we to think about same-sex marriage? What does the bible say? Before we address those questions we will spend time reviewing what makes a marriage a biblical marriage.
As we continue our conversation on a Christian worldview, specifically as it deals with thinking through this upcoming election we are diving deeper and deeper into different issues. This week we are looking at the sanctity of life. What it means to be made in the image of God, to have value, and to be worthy of life, no matter what stage of life you are in.
A Biblical Worldview - The Role of GovernmentPacific Church
Our task is to always learn God's eternal truths and apply them to our lives. This includes how God views government. What does the bible say about government?
How do the bible's stories illustrate the truth or foolishness of how government is done? How do we apply the biblical truths in our country? This requires wisdom, discernment, humility and what the Bible calls "good sense."

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

2. 1 Samuel 25:1 Then David rose and went down to the
wilderness of Paran. 2 And there was a man in Maon whose
business was in Carmel. The man was very rich; he had
three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was shearing
his sheep in Carmel.
3. "Nabal was the perfect picture of someone who had
experienced every blessing of the protection of God and
was miserable as a consequence."
4. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his
wife Abigail.
5. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his
wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but
the man was harsh and badly behaved; he was a Calebite.
6. 4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his
sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men. And David said to
the young men, "Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and
greet him in my name. 6 And thus you shall greet him:
'Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be
to all that you have.
7. 7 "I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have
been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed
nothing all the time they were in Carmel.
8. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let
my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a
feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your
servants and to your son David.'"
9. 9 When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal
in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal
answered David's servants, "Who is David? Who is the son
of Jesse? There are many servants these days who are
breaking away from their masters.
10. 11 Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I
have killed for my shearers and give it to men who come
from I do not know where?" 12 So David's young men
turned away and came back and told him all this. And
David said to his men…
11. 13 "Every man strap on his sword!" And every man of them
strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword.
And about four hundred men went up after David, while
two hundred remained with the baggage.
12. 14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife,
"Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to
greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were
very good to us, and we suffered no harm, and we did not
miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we
went with them.
13. 16 They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the
while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now
therefore know this and consider what you should do, for
harm is determined against our master and against all his
house, and he is such a worthless man that one cannot speak
to him."
14. 18 Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves
and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and
five seahs of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins
and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.
15. 19 And she said to her young men, "Go on before me;
behold, I come after you." But she did not tell her husband
Nabal.
16. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under
cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came
down toward her, and she met them.
17. 21 Now David had said, "Surely in vain have I guarded all
that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was
missed of all that belonged to him, and he has returned me
evil for good. 22 God do so to the enemies of David and
more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all
who belong to him."
18. 23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from
the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to
the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, "On me alone,
my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your
ears, and hear the words of your servant.
19. 25 Let not my lord regard this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as
his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with
him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my
lord, whom you sent.
20. 26 Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul
lives, because the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt
and from saving with your own hand, now then let your
enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as
Nabal.
21. 27 And now let this present that your servant has brought to
my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.
22. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord
will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord
is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be
found in you so long as you live.
23. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life
of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the
care of the Lord your God.
24. And the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the
hollow of a sling.
25. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all
the good that he has spoken concerning you and has
appointed you prince over Israel,
26. 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of
conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my
lord working salvation himself. And when the Lord has
dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.
27. 32 And David said to Abigail, "Blessed be the Lord, the God
of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me!. 33 Blessed be
your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this
day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my
own hand!
28. 34 For as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who
has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried
and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been
left to Nabal so much as one male."
29. 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought
him. And he said to her, "Go up in peace to your house. See,
I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition."
30. God speaks to us is through the _______ of ___________.wisdom other people
31. 36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a
feast in his house, like the feast of a king.
33. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light.
34. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his
wife told him these things,
35. In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his
wife told him these things, and his heart died within him,
and he became as a stone.
36. 38 And about ten days later the Lord struck Nabal, and he
died.
37. 39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Blessed
be the Lord who has avenged the insult I received at the
hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from
wrongdoing. The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his
own head.
38. Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her as his
wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at
Carmel, they said to her, "David has sent us to you to take
you to him as his wife."
39. 41 And she rose and bowed with her face to the ground and
said, "Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet
of the servants of my lord." 42 And Abigail hurried and rose
and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended
her. She followed the messengers of David and became his
wife
40. 43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and both of them
became his wives.
41. He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led
astray.
42. 26:18-20 The Ziphites tip off Saul to David's location (23:19–20)
26:1 Saul is vulnerable (24:3)
26: 22-24 David's men urge him to strike (24:4)
26:11 David refuses to harm Saul, the Lord's anointed (24:5–6)

43. 26:17 Saul inquires, "Is this your voice my son David?" (24:16)

26:21 David responds (24:21–22)
26:21 Saul speaks a blessing over David (24:19–20)
26:7 David and Saul part ways (24:22)
45. 1 Samuel 26:10 And David said, "As the Lord lives, the
Lord will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will
go down into battle and perish.
47. ____ is not going to change and that _____ is growing.Saul David
48. 1 Samuel 27:1 Then David said in his heart, "Now I shall
perish one day by the hand of Saul.
49. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to
the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking
me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall
escape out of his hand."
50. 2 So David arose and went over, he and the six hundred men
who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of
Gath.
51. 3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men,
every man with his household, and David with his two
wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal's
widow. 4 And when it was told Saul that David had fled to
Gath, he no longer sought him.
52. 5 Then David said to Achish, "If I have found favor in your
eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns,
that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell
in the royal city with you?"
