King David has fled
Jerusalem with his
people.
Review
As he crossed the Mount
of Olives he met Ziba,
servant to Mephibosheth,
who had many gifts for
David.

David asked Ziba about his
master, who had stayed in
Jerusalem hoping to gain his
daddy’s throne.
Review
David had done Mephibo-
sheth nothing but good.
Ungrateful

5 And when king David came to
Bahurim, behold, thence came
out a man of the family of the
house of Saul, whose name was
Shimei, the son of Gera: he
came forth, and cursed still as
he came. 6 And he cast stones at
David, and at all the servants of
king David: and all the people
and all the mighty men were on
his right hand and on his left.
Boldly
wrong!

7 And thus said Shimei when
he cursed, Come out, come
out, thou bloody man, and thou
man of Belial: 8 The LORD
hath returned upon thee all the
blood of the house of Saul, in
whose stead thou hast reigned;
and the LORD hath delivered
the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold,
thou art taken in thy mischief,
because thou art a bloody man.
We know that David
never fought
against Saul.
Shimei has
got it all
wrong.

9 Then said Abishai the son of
Zeruiah unto the king, Why
should this dead dog curse my
lord the king? let me go over, I
pray thee, and take off his head.
10 And the king said, What have
I to do with you, ye sons of
Zeruiah? so let him curse,
because (perhaps) the LORD
hath said unto him, Curse
David. Who shall then say,
Wherefore hast thou done so?
David remembers
his sin, and takes
this as part of his
penalty.

Abishai was David’s nephew, oldest son of
David’s sister – Zeruiah.
He was a great warrior, who once faced and killed
300 men alone with his own spear.
He alone went with David one time into the camp
of Saul and took his water jug and spear from him
as he slept, leaving it beside him as a sign of their
peaceful intentions.

11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants,
Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels,
seeketh my life: how much more now may this
Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for
the LORD hath bidden him. 12 It may be that the
LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the
LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.
Sometimes apparently evil things that come
upon us may be tests, sent by God.
If we endure with patience, God may bless us
for our virtue in the situation.

Romans 12:12 teaches us to be
patient in tribulation.
Maybe it’s from the Lord; maybe it’s from the
devil; and maybe it’s a result of our own way.
When we are patient, continuing to serve the Lord
with gladness, and rejoicing in faith,
God will see and deliver us from evil.
King David gave us a
good example.

10. 10
13 And as David and his men
went by the way, Shimei
went along on the hill's side
over against him, and cursed
as he went, and threw stones
at him, and cast dust. 14 And
the king, and all the people
that were with him, came
weary, and refreshed
themselves there.

11. 11
Sometimes a devil or one of his servants just keeps
on bedeviling us until we are worn out.
But, if we keep on plodding patiently and
trusting God, He will give us a place and
time to rest.
Matthew 11 28 Come unto Me, all ye that labor and
are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My
yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and
lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

12. 12
15 And Absalom, and all the
people the men of Israel,
came to Jerusalem, and
Ahithophel with him.* 16 And
it came to pass, when Hushai
the Archite, David's friend,
was come unto Absalom, that
Hushai said unto Absalom,
God save the king, God save
the king.
He entered an
almost empty city.
David’s spy in
the camp.

13. 13
17 And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness
to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy
friend? 18 And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but
whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men
of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I
abide.
Flattery and deceit!
I serve the king of Israel, and now that’s you.

14. 14
19 And again, whom
should I serve? should I
not serve in the presence
of his son? as I have
served in thy father's
presence, so will I be in
thy presence. 20 Then said
Absalom to Ahithophel,
Give counsel among you
what we shall do.
Work together.
David’s plan is
coming together.

15. 15
21 And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto
thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep
the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art
abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all
that are with thee be strong.
Demonstrating that he is the big dog now.
David won’t be coming back.
That would give people courage to join Absalom.

16. 16
22 So they spread Absalom a
tent upon the top of the
house; and Absalom went in
unto his father's concubines
in the sight of all Israel.
God said it would be like this,
after David took Bathsheba
from her husband Uriah.
David’s past has come back to haunt him.
You can’t do wrong and get by!

17. 17
23 And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he
counseled in those days, was as if a man had
enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the
counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with
Absalom.
Ahithophel was counted one of the wisest
men in all of Israel.
Absalom trusted him and followed his advice.
But remember, David prayed that God would
confuse Ahithophel, and sent Hushai to help.

18. 18
David had to suffer all of this, because God had
said he would after his great sin.
But when Nathan confronted him about his sin,
David repented -- so God is with David.
People tend to think that repentance removes all
consequences of our deeds; not so.
But repentance restores our fellowship with God
and with the church, and God walks with us hand
in hand through every trial we face.

19. 19
Closing thought: Anyone who leads you to sin does
not love you and will lead you to destruction.
Sin may bring momentary
pleasure, but it will never give
you lasting joy and peace.
We are warned to flee from the
paths of sin and walk with God.
You can’t have it both ways.
