1 Samuel 22 1 David therefore departed thence
(Gath), and escaped to the cave Adullam: and
when his brethren and all his father's house heard
it, they went down thither to him.

                           Bethlehem

                                                     2
2 And everyone that was in distress, and everyone
that was in debt, and everyone that was discon-
tented (bitter), gathered themselves unto him; and
he became a captain over them: and there were
with him about four hundred men.
Mark 2 17 When Jesus heard it, He saith unto them,
They that are whole have no need of the physician,
but they that are sick: I came not to call the
righteous, but sinners to repentance.

                                                 3
3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he
said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my
mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till
I know what God will do for me. 4 And he brought
them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with
him all the while that David was in the hold (stronghold).

                                                        4
"Till I know what God will do for me."
David didn't say, "Till I decide what to do."
Nor, "Till we see what happens."
   He was waiting on God.
David went through a short time of fear and doubt,
when he was doing whatever he thought of.
But he has repented, and now he is trusting God.
He is waiting on God's direction.

                                                  5
5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not
in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of
Judah. Then David departed, and came into the
forest of Hareth. The Word of the Lord
It was time to leave the place of safety, and
step out into a place of risk,
        but also of opportunity.

                                                     6
1 Sam 22:6
        When Saul heard
that David was discovered,
and the men that were with
him, (now Saul abode in
Gibeah under a tree in
Ramah, having his spear in
his hand, and all his
servants were standing
about him;)

 One thing on his mind.
  "Find and kill David."
                             7
7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about
him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse
give every one of you fields and vineyards, and
make you all captains of thousands, and captains of
hundreds; Saul was a Benjamite.
"I know y'all like David, and think he is great."
"But what can he do for you?"
"I'm the king. I can give you fields and vineyards;
I can give you positions of authority in the army."
David is just an outlaw on the run with a little band
                 of rebellious men.
                                                   8
8 That all of you have conspired
against me, and there is none that
sheweth me that my son hath
made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you
that is sorry for me, or sheweth
unto me that my son hath stirred
up my servant against me, to lie
in wait, as at this day?
     Saul's envy of David led to paranoia;
everyone was against him -- in his mind.
                                              9
He even blamed Jonathan for stirring up this
             trouble with David.
Saul knows that God has chosen David to be king.
        It's Saul's own fault!
1 Samuel 15 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witch-
craft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the Word of the Lord,
He hath also rejected thee from being king.
But Saul will never admit his own culpability.

                                                  10
9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set
over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of
Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of
Ahitub. 10 And he enquired of the Lord for him, and
gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of
Goliath the Philistine.
Doeg makes it look as though Ahimelech was
an ally of David, but we know that
           David deceived Ahimelech.

                                                  11
11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest,
the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the
priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them
to the king. 12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of
Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

                                                  12
13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired
against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou
hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired
of God for him, that he should rise against me, to
lie in wait, as at this day?
Saul was certain that David was just waiting on an
opportunity to kill him and take the throne.
He believed there was a big conspiracy.
                 Not true!
David was waiting -- on God.
                                                 13
14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said,
And who is so faithful among all thy servants as
David, which is the king's son-in-law, and goeth at
thy bidding, and is honorable in thine house? 15 Did
I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far
from me: let not the king impute anything unto his
servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy
servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
"I thought David was on a mission for you."
"I had inquired of God many times for him,
                 at your bidding."
                                                 14
16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahim-
elech, thou, and all thy father's house. 17 And the
king said unto the footmen that stood about him,
Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; because their
hand also is with David, and because they knew
when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the
servants of the king would not put forth their hand
to fall upon the priests of the Lord.

     We ain't killing no preacher!
Folks should be careful how they fight
           against God's men.
                                                  15
18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall
upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned,
and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day
fourscore and five (85) persons that did wear a
linen ephod.
                Doeg was a dog;
            He had no conscience.
He would do anything to gain favor with Saul.

                                                     16
The slaughter didn't end with the priests.
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with
the edge of the sword, both men and women,
children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and
sheep, with the edge of the sword. 20 And one of the
sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named
Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21 And
Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the
Lord's priests.

                                                 17
22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day,
when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would
surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all
the persons of thy father's house. 23 Abide thou with
me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy
life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
Unlike Saul, David admitted his own
        guilt in this slaughter.
We have to confess that we are wrong,
admitting it to ourselves and to God,
Before we can get right! 18
1 John 1:8-10 (TLB) If we say that we have no sin,
we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to
accept the Truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to
Him, He can be depended on to forgive us and to
cleanse us from every wrong. [And it is perfectly
proper for God to do this for us because Christ died
to wash away our sins.] 10 If we claim we have not
sinned, we are lying and calling God a liar, for He
says we have sinned.

                                                 19
Saul blamed his troubles on anybody but himself.
            He never repented at all.
David did some wrong things, but he always
       admitted and regretted them.

Lord give me a heart like
           David, always ready to
         confess my wrongs and do
                    right.

1 samuel 22b give me a heart like david

  • 1. Stone Creek www.rossvillechurch.com 781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 September 30, 2012 1
  • 2. 1 Samuel 22 1 David therefore departed thence (Gath), and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. Bethlehem 2
  • 3. 2 And everyone that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt, and everyone that was discon- tented (bitter), gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. Mark 2 17 When Jesus heard it, He saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 3
  • 4. 3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold (stronghold). 4
  • 5. "Till I know what God will do for me." David didn't say, "Till I decide what to do." Nor, "Till we see what happens." He was waiting on God. David went through a short time of fear and doubt, when he was doing whatever he thought of. But he has repented, and now he is trusting God. He is waiting on God's direction. 5
  • 6. 5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth. The Word of the Lord It was time to leave the place of safety, and step out into a place of risk, but also of opportunity. 6
  • 7. 1 Sam 22:6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;) One thing on his mind. "Find and kill David." 7
  • 8. 7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; Saul was a Benjamite. "I know y'all like David, and think he is great." "But what can he do for you?" "I'm the king. I can give you fields and vineyards; I can give you positions of authority in the army." David is just an outlaw on the run with a little band of rebellious men. 8
  • 9. 8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? Saul's envy of David led to paranoia; everyone was against him -- in his mind. 9
  • 10. He even blamed Jonathan for stirring up this trouble with David. Saul knows that God has chosen David to be king. It's Saul's own fault! 1 Samuel 15 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witch- craft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the Word of the Lord, He hath also rejected thee from being king. But Saul will never admit his own culpability. 10
  • 11. 9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 And he enquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. Doeg makes it look as though Ahimelech was an ally of David, but we know that David deceived Ahimelech. 11
  • 12. 11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. 12
  • 13. 13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? Saul was certain that David was just waiting on an opportunity to kill him and take the throne. He believed there was a big conspiracy. Not true! David was waiting -- on God. 13
  • 14. 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son-in-law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honorable in thine house? 15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute anything unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. "I thought David was on a mission for you." "I had inquired of God many times for him, at your bidding." 14
  • 15. 16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahim- elech, thou, and all thy father's house. 17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord. We ain't killing no preacher! Folks should be careful how they fight against God's men. 15
  • 16. 18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five (85) persons that did wear a linen ephod. Doeg was a dog; He had no conscience. He would do anything to gain favor with Saul. 16
  • 17. The slaughter didn't end with the priests. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. 20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord's priests. 17
  • 18. 22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house. 23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. Unlike Saul, David admitted his own guilt in this slaughter. We have to confess that we are wrong, admitting it to ourselves and to God, Before we can get right! 18
  • 19. 1 John 1:8-10 (TLB) If we say that we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the Truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to Him, He can be depended on to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. [And it is perfectly proper for God to do this for us because Christ died to wash away our sins.] 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are lying and calling God a liar, for He says we have sinned. 19
  • 20. Saul blamed his troubles on anybody but himself. He never repented at all. David did some wrong things, but he always admitted and regretted them. Lord give me a heart like David, always ready to confess my wrongs and do right. 20
