The digestive system breaks down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed and used by the body. The pharynx is shared by the respiratory and digestive systems. The stomach contains acids and enzymes that begin breaking down proteins and converting carbohydrates. The small intestine further digests food with enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver. Absorption of digested nutrients occurs in the small intestine through finger-like protrusions called villi. Undigested waste passes to the large intestine where water is reabsorbed before elimination.
