best option is the gods, he turns to Apollo the god. After having a back and forth argument with his
brother in law Creon he learns more about the former king s death. Oedipus then calls for Tiresias, the

Why Merton s Anomie And Strain Theories Have Been...
Robert Merton s anomie and strain theories have been regarded as a valuable analytical framework for
studyieng deviant and criminal behaviors (Deflem, 2003). In 1938, Merton first presented his theory,
which has become the springboard for plenty of subsequent theoretical discussions. His contributions
on social structures and anomie has been frequently quoted and heralded as one of the most important
theories in sociology. Although anomie and strain theory can be seen as an undisputed classic, the
meaning and the status of his conceptualizations has continued to be debated over the years (Besnard,
1987 cited in Deflem, 2003). Some of the confusion over the limitation of Merton s theory is about
whether these theories can explain crime in contemporary society (Cole, 1975 cited in Deflem, 2003).
In this essay, I will argue that Merton s anomie and strain theories can be applied in contemporary
society to a certain extent. It will focus on the cultural values in Australia.
Australia is known as a first class country, which ranking the 10th in the World Happiness Report in
2015 (Wright, G 2016). Despite such statistics, increasing crime rate, especially Indigenous offending
rate, is an ongoing problem for the whole of Australian agencies. From 1998 to 2007, the increasing
rate of non Indigenous prisoner was 94 percent, while there was an astonishing 266 percent rising in
Indigenous prisoner numbers (ABS 2007b, cited in Skinner, 2011). It is stated by SCATSIA (2011,

Pope Boniface Viii s Challenges To The King
Pope Boniface VIII s Challenges to the Kingship of Philip s
Pope Boniface VIII wrote the bulls, Clericis Laicos in 1296 and Unam Sanctam in 1302, to affirm and
perform the papal supremacy over his ecclesiastical persons and the kings, Philip IV of France and
Edward I of England. Both bulls consist of the decrees that restrain the rulers from enforcing their
derogatory authority over Christians: one forbids prelates and churchmen to pay the tax that laymen
heavily imposed on them: the latter one demands suspected clergies under the papal jurisdiction,
furthermore insisting the pope s total authority over his churchmen in France. Philip had knocked off
Clericis Laicos by depriving Boniface of a major revenue source, yet the pope again threw down the
gauntlet against the rulers with the new threat of excommunication. Although both bulls indicate the

According to Clericis Laicos , Boniface criticized and opposed to Philip for his unethical scheme to
take over the churchmen s possession to continue his dishonest war with England. Since Philip needed
a tremendous amount of money to prepare for the war, he overtaxed his people including clergies
without any exception. However, Boniface considered Philip s preparation of the war as a plot to
pursue his power over the church s possessions. Therefore, he denounced the king s overtaxation on
the churchmen as though he suspected the king of striving to subject the churchmen to slavery and
bring them under his control. (Robinson) However, Boniface mildly reacted to the heavy taxation on
the clergies in which he merely forbade them to pay their tax rather than directly objecting to the king.
With indignation toward Boniface s reaction, Philip threatened to jolt Apostolic Palace in an
economical way. Therefore, it was inevitable for him to withdraw his hand from Clericis

Dreams Are From The Book Your Soul Is Writing About You
Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you Marsha Norman The
Interpretation of Dreams was published by Sigmund Freud in the year 1900 as a thought provoking
compilation of ideas surrounding the cognitive processes of dreaming. Although it has been translated
and edited since its original publishing date, it reads as if to hold true to Freudian fashion; addressing
levels of consciousness and their effects on how specific dreams are formed. Freud makes a clear and
reverent effort to acknowledge others theories, as well as his own, in an attempt to explain the
unexplainable. His focus throughout the text is to hypothesize on how regression, resistance, and
censorship all play a delicate role in the remembrance and interpretation of ones dreams. It is Freud s
skillful application of resistance and censorship that grants further contemplation of why dreams are
so soon to fade and be forgotten upon awakening. It is also this application that guides the reader into
how these two processes may require one to use free association to interpret such dreams. Resistance
and censorship are explained by Freud as a cognitive process that happens due to the separation of
waking and sleeping states. He presents the idea that while one sleeps, the cognitive censorship used
throughout waking hours is significantly reduced, making dreams possible. However, immediately
present upon awakening is mental resistance, resulting in the forgetting or fragmenting of

Introduction The exposed roadcut east of the Doc Long Picnic area, about 9 miles north of the town of
Cedar Crest on the east side of the Sandia Mountains, provided an exceptional site to study weathering
processes. The exposed Precambrian Sandia Granite offered a place to collect data and test the
hypothesis that biotite content, grainsize, and associated inclusions have influenced the amount of
weathering that has occurred. The granite underlies the Great Unconformity and the Madera
Formation, which is a carbonate succession with interbedded sandstones, Pennsylvanian in age. The
granitic outcrop composed of the dominant minerals quartz, potassium feldspar (some plagioclase),
and biotite (field book) displayed different degrees of weathering. Different weathering features in the
exposure such as grussification, jointing, and corestones suggested that grain size and biotite content
were not the only influences on weathering processes taking place.
Methods
Data collection for assessing our hypothesis consisted of making several observations along the
exposed granite. The main observations noted included mineral composition, weathering rank, mean
grain size, percent biotite, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lewis And Clark Summary
The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri river, such principal stream of it, as, by it s
course communication with the water of the Pacific ocean may offer the most direct practicable water
communication across this continent, for the purposes of commerce. Thomas Jefferson had chosen to
ask two men to embark on a journey across the unknown land. In April of 1803, President Jefferson
bought the Louisiana Territory from a power hungry man named Napoleon. Buying this land doubled
the size of the United States. There was a major curiosity of what was in the newly purchased land
which inspired Thomas Jefferson to appoint two people to discover and record the newly acquired
land, those men were Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the winter of 1804 1805 they made peace and settled into the Mandan tribes home. Here they
met their translator, Toussaint Charbonneau, a french, Canadian trader. Charboneau brought his 16
year old, native American, pregnant, wife, Sacagawea. Sacagawea proved herself to be a very
important person for the expedition. In early May while on the Missouri river, a sudden gust of wind
pushed over the boat knocking out some important supplies. All the important supplies were saved
only by Sacagawea as she threw herself over the side and pulled most of the supplies back into the
boat. On the way to the rocky mountains, The explorers realized they had a problem, they needed
horses to walk up the mountains and to carry all their supplies. On August 11 Lewis spotted a native
on his horse, It happened to be a Shoshone Native American. The group had Charbonneau translate
and ask for horses, The Shoshone then lead them to his chief. Later While Sacagawea translated each
groups words she realized something, the chief, appeared to be her brother. Because of this, the
Shoshones gave the explorers quite a bit of horses and provided them with other important supplies
that they had lost or used. This paragraph proves that without the natives on the explorers side, they

The Dark Years 1940-1930 s Analysis
The Journal of Helene Berr shows how a young woman strives to understand her role as a Jew under
Nazi controlled France. Helene writes about her experiences and how they shaped her attitudes about
her situation. She also notes the increase in French collaboration and how France turned against its
people. Tony Judt s article Betrayal of France and Julian Jackson s France The Dark Years 1940 1944
also examine this betrayal of France s Jews. These three documents examine life for Jews under Nazi
controlled France. They observe what went wrong and why the Jews received the treatment that they
did. France s Jewish population believed that their Frenchness would save them, yet this faith was

Many believed that their loyalty to France would save them and so they differentiated themselves
from foreign Jews. They felt that identifying with the foreign Jews would renounce their tradition of
assimilation and French patriotism. Many Jews believed that it was this contribution to French society
that would protect them. Additionally, many French Jews felt disconnected with the foreign Jews,
many of whom had come to France as refugees. They did not see them as equals to the established,
well off French Jewish families. Helene Berr echoes this sentiment when she visits her father in
Préfecture de Police. She struggles to accept that her father was a prisoner alongside the other Jews
because the four of us were so distant from those poor folk. In France, many Jewish refugees lived in
poorer neighborhoods and it was easy for Helene to differentiate herself from them. These refugees
had not assimilated into French society the same way that the Berrs had and, thus, did not identify
with the nation. Therefore, it was strange for Helene to see her father grouped in with all the other
Jews. French Jews identification with the nation and their confidence in its solidarity is widespread
and the reason why many people put faith in

The Reading Of Beyond Heroes And Holidays Essay
Through the reading of Beyond Heroes and Holidays: A Practical Guide to K 12 Anti Racist,
Multicultural Education and Staff Development and A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota I
have not only learned about the experiences of others, but have also gained a deeper understanding of
my own racial and cultural identity and how that relates to other identities around me. In learning this
information, I feel that I will not only be able to understand and relate better to my future students, but
also understand their backgrounds and how they are affecting them presently. Therefore, I will be able
to teach to individuals in the way they need me to, but also create a more welcoming and inclusive
environment (racially, culturally, and otherwise) in my future classroom. The information I have read
has helped me to understand my own racial and cultural identity, how it relates to the identities of my
future students, and what I can do to make educational institutions more racially and culturally
inclusive. Recently I have been evaluating what I think to be my own racial and cultural identity. As a
Caucasian of mostly German decent who grew up in the upper Midwest, I blended in with the
majority of people around me. Due to this fact, I did not often think about race, and when I did it was
thinking about how others were different than me and the rest of us . I was a product of my culture and
the society surrounding me; I regret this thinking now, and do deeply apologize.

Kendrick Lamar s Music And Music
Kendrick Lamar has lyrics that are hard, but within those lyrics is a description of his childhood which
was even harder. To provide some background on Kendrick Lamar, he grew up in Piru territory of
Compton, also know as Bompton. His parents both used drugs, and listened to many different types of
music ranging from, Jazz and blues to gangsta rap. Any hip hop fan should be familiar with Kendrick
s name, they should also be familiar with his music. The fact that Kendrick Lamar isn t being
recognized as a legend this early in his career slightly upsets me.
Kendrick Lamar s newer music is underappreciated because of the unique sound and thought
provoking lyrics. Many people don t listen to music for the full experience; they just listen for some
background noise. According to a study published by Edison Research, in May 2014, 52.1% of the
music listened to by Americans every day is on the Radio. To think that over half of the music heard
every day is probably coming from car speakers, a dusty radio on your grandfather s workbench, or
that little radio tucked in a corner in your kitchen, is astounding. People that listen to music on the
radio normally don t concentrate on the music. Music is typically used to accompany a mundane task,
or another source of entertainment, like a puzzle. It is also very common to listen to music while
working. And while listening to music while doing other tasks isn t a negative thing, people don t
know what they are listening to. This

CHAPTER 1: The Prison Door
The first chapter gives a description of the dark and gloomy nature of the prison that was established
in the quot;vicinity of Cornhill quot; by the early settlers. The prison is described as an quot;ugly
edifice quot; and quot;black flower of civilized society quot;. Weeds grow in front of the gloomy
structure, where a group of Puritans, dressed normally in their dull clothing, has gathered. The only
positive image in the whole setting is a single rosebush that stands beside the weeds. It foreshadows
that there will be some brightness amidst this quot;tale of human frailty and sorrow. quot;
Notes
The purpose of this opening chapter is to set the scene for the novel in seventeenth century
Boston. A crowd of Puritans has gathered at the prison and as always, they wear quot;sad colored

foreshadows the situations of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. She is outwardly

Comparison Of Silent And Boomer Generations
With the advent of social media and unlimited access to the internet, many are contemplating why
Millennials seem to be more ignorant than other generations. Millennials seem to be more concerned
with status updates and keeping up with the Kardashians than with actual news. Older generations
wonder how this could have happened to a generation with so much capability to be informed.
Millennials are (or at least have the capability to be) more informed than previous generations,
because of instantly updating social media, access to more news, and advances in education. On the
other hand, others may feel as though newspapers and news radio stations are going the way of the

Socrates Unexamined Life Essay
Why does Socrates think that the unexamined life is not worth living? Does he have a good defense of
his philosophical life? As the wisest man in all of ancient Greece, Socrates believed that the purpose
of life was both personal and spiritual growth. He establishes this conviction in what is arguably his
most renowned statement: The unexamined life is not worth living. Socrates makes it quite evident
through the severity of the language in this claim, the extent to which he will live and die for this
ideal. He did not merely say that the unexamined life was not a noble existence or that it was the path
of the less righteous, rather the unexamined life is just not worth living at all. Theoretically, according
to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the point at which it begins to become a task to understand how the examined life is at all
aligned with the quest of the principles justice and virtue, when in reality it just leads to a state of
confusion. The skepticism found within Socrates logic leads us to realize that he has no claims that he
has answers, yet he is living and dying for the ideal that an unexamined life is not worth living. There
is no point at which Socrates is looking for followers, much like a prophet would look for disciples,
for his ideals appeal to reason, not faith. Although this may be the case, he has left his contemporaries,
ancient and modern day philosophers, as well as any other students of his teachings in a complete
paradox. For centuries, many have attempted to carve out a middle path between the severity of his
claim on the examined life, and the predestined state of doubt that surfaces with the search for justice
and virtue. In Socrates attempt to live an examined life, he put forth efforts to improve society as a
whole. His method consisted of elenchus, rather than that of preaching or lecturing, because it was
more effective to allow his notion of human ignorance to surface through a dialogue than through a
monologue of his claims. Socrates saw it his duty to lead a lifestyle in which he continued to unveil
the false wisdom of his contemporaries. He considered his efforts to be a mere fulfillment of his
obligation to the gods. For the

Abraham Lincoln The Best President
The best United States president is Abraham Lincoln. A survey from 2014 by America Political
Science Association, voted Abraham Lincoln as the best U.S. president. (Washington Post, 1)
Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, took care of the civil war, and was a civil rights activist. I think he
is the best president we have had because of these reasons.
During his time in office President Lincoln abolished slavery. Abraham Lincoln became the United
States 16th President in 1861, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those
slaves within the Confederacy in 1863. (whitehouse, 2) Though Abraham Lincoln felt African

On paper, global marketing is undoubtedly a great concept. The idea of leveraging a marketing

Race To Space Dbq
The race to space is a great part in history, well that is if you like space and the technology we have
today; it was initiated in 1957 and ended 1969. The space race was a race with the Soviet Union,
which at that time included Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Transcaucasion Federation, to see who
could get higher achievements in space knowledge and to see who could get man into space first. The
race to space was happening at the height of the Cold War. The Cold War was fought between the
Eastern and Western Bloc of Germany. This made people in the United States worried because they
didn t want the Soviets to use the technology for military uses such as nuclear weapons. This thought
spiked the fear of a nuclear war with the Soviets in America. Even with this how did the race to space

Summary Of The Middle Class In Madame Bovary
The middle class in France during the early 1800s, otherwise known as the Bourgeoisie, was defined
by capitalistic views and business minded outlooks. However, many people of this era, including
author Gustave Flaubert, were highly critical of this middle class. In Flaubert s novel Madame Bovary,
the character Homais represents the ideas and spirit of the Bourgeoisie. Because of his dissatisfaction
with the middle class, the author gives Homais several negative character traits, such as selfishness,
cowardice, and hypocrisy. Flaubert s criticism of the egotistical and corrupt nature of Homais is
evident during the procedure on Hippolyte and the argument between Homais and the priest; Homais
triumph at the end of the novel suggests that Flaubert is also critical of the outcome of the pharmacist
s actions, not just the actions themselves.
Flaubert establishes Homais cowardice when he refuses to take responsibility for the failed operation
on Hippolyte. Charles originally does not want to take part in this procedure, but Homais urges him to
do so. After the operation is deemed a failure, Monsieur Canivet criticizes Charles to Homais when he
says, But some doctors want to be smart, so they use all sorts of remedies on their patients without
worrying about the consequences... and, ...we wouldn t dream of operating on someone who s in
perfect health! (Flaubert 157). Even though Homais knows that he pressured Charles into performing
this operation, he does not say anything to Canivet that expresses his partial responsibility. Flaubert
writes, He therefore did not defend Bovary or make any comment at all; abandoning his principles, he
sacrificed his pride to the more serious interests of his business (157). Therefore, Flaubert criticizes
the spineless nature of Homais by emphasizing his lack of response to Canivet s insults. The author
reveals Homais character trait of irresponsibility in this scene, suggesting that Flaubert views the
Bourgeoisie as cowardly. Homais and the middle class, in the mind of Flaubert, are too craven to be
held accountable for any action that would hurt their reputations.
In addition to demonstrating Homais cowardly nature, the operation scene also serves to reveal his

LAB 2 Basic Logic Gates and Circuit Simplification
OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this lab is to become familiar with digital design in order to derive Boolean
expressions that represent logic circuits and then simplifying these expressions using the rules of
Boolean Algebra. We will also verify the equivalency of the original and simplified Boolean
expressions by implementing the logic circuits represented by each expression. Using Multisim, we
will simulate the logic circuits and create their truth tables for further Circuit Analysis.
EQUIPMENT:
Logic Circuit Trainer Kit
Multisim 14.0
Introduction:
In Today s era mostly all electronic devices use Binary Digital Logic Circuits. These circuits consist of
two possible outputs, mostly used terms are TRUE/FALSE , or ONE/ZERO. Such an output is called a
Binary Digit, or a bit. The

Social Comparison Theory Analysis
The Social Comparison theory can be applied to how beauty standards in television have an effect on
how children view themselves and the world. The theory describes that individuals make judgments
about themselves based on the comparison they view on television. In the theory there are two types
of comparisons to be made: upward comparisons and downward comparisons. This analysis will focus
on upward comparisons as it is best applied to how beauty standards in television affects the way
children view the world. In upward comparisons an individual compares him/herself with others who
they feel are better than them. This comparison can only lead to on of two things, the individuals will
try to self enhance themselves the better conform to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are three main components of this theory: attention, retention, and motivation. A child is
exposed to a crime, an act of violence, or some sort of injustice; this is the attention portion of the
theory. Viewing these acts expands their behavioral options and discover the consequence or reward
for such actions. In the retention portion of this theory, the learned images that a child has viewed is
internalized. The cognitive function of memory enables us to reenact that vivid image of violence. The
theory suggests we can live vicariously through these images; we may never reenact them in reality,
but we have been exposed to them.) This constant exposure and mental reenactment of violence lead
to desensitization to these injustices because they are familiar. In the motivation portion of the theory
we calculate how imitating these violent acts would pan out in reality. The viewer weighs the rewards
or punishments of these actions. Motivation comes from the expectation of future reward or
punishment; both internal and external rewards are played out in the viewer s mind to

Example Of Pyramid System
A hierarchical system in a company does not allow for growth within that company, along with not
utilizing every employees skills. A system related to this will typically look a pyramid an owner on
top, then trickles down to vice president, CFO s, COO s, then continuing with positions along the lines
of, general manager, assistant manager, and shift manager. Towards the bottom of a pyramid system
will be your full time employees and if you have part time employees they might be even lower.
Pyramid system was used in the article Pyramids and Pancakes by Michael Lewis, which Lewis seems
to imply that a pyramid system is an unpleasant work environment for employees towards the bottom.

Therefore the bosses do not apply everyone s strengths, which would enable more growth. Instead a
pyramid system, bosses make the decisions on what is right and what is wrong, or what the employees
should or should not do for the company. An example of a pyramid system preventing workers from
doing good work is a journalist, named Suarez, who ultimately ended up hating his job because of the
boss and the profit hungry people in charge. In Good Work, Well Done: A Psychological Study by
Howard Gardner, Suarez, who was a journalist for a pyramid system was incharge of a story about the
dangers of video games. However, Suarez soon discovers that there is little truth to this story and does
not want to continue to write the story. When Suarez tried to abandon the story, Gardner explains
Suarez had tried to get out of covering the story, but his boss insisted that he go on and file it (4).
While Suarez was working in a pyramid system where his boss is supposed to be the expert in the
company however, he demands Suarez to cover a story about video games being harmful to kids,
because that will make the most

A Romanticized View Of Their Ancestors
In southern fiction there are many characters to be found that possess heroic, or idealized, views of
their ancestors. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy
left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in
southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing:
No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is.
It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all
a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of
action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. (Fennell 37)
It is seemingly impossible to separate the past from the present among characters in southern
literature. In this paper I will examine three characters and their romanticized view of their ancestors,
as well as their burden. I will be considering Gail Hightower and Joanna Burden in William Faulkner s
Light in August, and Cheyenne Cotterell in Tiya Miles The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens
Ghosts. All three of these characters idealize their ancestors while simultaneously feeling burdened as
a result of it.
In Faulkner s Light in August Gail Hightower, an outcast reverend, is heavily burdened by his father
and grandfather. He lives within the past and seems to have no care for the present or future.

Comparing UMBC And UMCB Policies
The two agencies that were interviewed have some differences in developing policies and procedures
as well as some similarities. University Medical Center at Brackenridge (UMCB) is local
organization; whereas, ST. David Medical Center operates under Hospital Corporation of America
(HCA) organization which has multiple hospitals and surgery centers in 21 States. UMCB policies are
not officially regulated according to current evidences; however, the hospital librarians researches on
current evidence based articles and pass that information to physicians and nurses. On the other hand,
HCA make their policies using current evidence based studies as well as conducts their own limited
trials. UMBC uses all types of evidences and stakeholders (Physicians,

The Massachusetts Model Of Healthcare Reform
THE MASSACHUSETTS MODEL OF HEALTHCARE REFORM
The Massachusetts model is considered by many to be the blueprint for the national health care
reform. It was introduced in the year 2006 and was fully implemented by 2010. The state previously
had a free care pool through which it funded the health care given to people who were uninsured and
ineligible for Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance. The then federal government insisted
that either the state reduced this funding or it lost $385 million in Medicare funds (Lizza, 2011, June
6). The uninsured population in the state at that time was 10.9%, which was much less than the
national average of 15.8% (Day Nardin, 2011) making the state relatively more suitable for any health

Those with incomes between 150% and 300% paid a sliding scale premium and co payments. The
state also created a Commonwealth Care program providing subsidized private health insurance to
individuals with incomes less than 300% of poverty level and not eligible for Medicaid. This program
excluded illegal immigrants, immigrants in U.S. for less than 5 years and employees who declined
employer sponsored coverage.
EMPLOYER SPONSORED INSURANCE: Any employer with more than 10 employees was required
to provide them with health insurance and also to contribute a reasonable sum towards their costs or
he had to pay a penalty of up to $295 per employee annually. The revenue generated through this
would be used to cover costs of reform
INSURANCE EXCHANGE: They created an independent, easy to understand health insurance
exchange, called the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority. It provided citizens with
different insurance options and helped them make the appropriate choices. This agency also managed
the Commonwealth Care and the Commonwealth Choice programs. The Commonwealth Care offered
subsidized insurance to people earning less than 300% of poverty level while the Commonwealth
Choice offered unsubsidized insurance to people earning more than 300% of the FPL. This made
purchasing insurance plans simple and accessible.

Sexual Assault Of A 6 Year Old Boy Essay
On April 5th, 2016 at approximately 10:00 AM, I, Investigator James Poffel was assigned a case in
reference to a possible sexual assault of a 6 year old boy, Kevin Baptiste. The reporting party was
Pershing Elementary School staff. Officer Will Sanders #549 was dispatched to Pershing Elementary,
located at 301 N. 54th St., in reference to making contact with Karen Watkins and Shannon Johnson.
Once on the scene, Officer Sanders was informed by Ms. Watkins that Kevin disclosed to the school
counselor, Shannon Johnson that he sucked on his mother, Taren Harvey s, privates. Ms. Watkins
originally called Kids Space to try and figure out the proper procedure since they have had Darkness
to Light Training provided by Kids Space in the past. Officer Sanders then spoke with Ms. Johnson,
who stated three boys were brought to speak with her over a squabble they had on the playground. The
boys were Ty Looney, Kevin Baptiste, and Malcom Lewis. They were all arguing, so Ms. Johnson
separated them and spoke with them one at a time. Ty told Ms. Johnson that they were all arguing
because Kevin called Ty and Malcom gay and said they sucked each other s privates . Malcom said
the same thing as Ty. Lastly, she called in Kevin and he immediately started saying he did not do
anything. Kevin said he was arguing with the other boys because they told Kevin that he sucked on his
mama s privates . DHS was contacted and a referral was made. After receiving the report and having

Compare And Contrast Queen Elizabeth I And King Elizabeth I
Cedric Lancaster Professor Weaver Organizational Leadership Queen Elizabeth I vs. King Henry V:
Comparison and Contrast of Two Leaders Throughout history select individuals have been
documented as a result of their ability to lead, or lack there of. The documentation over the years has
been helpful to historians, scholars, and the general population when trying to better understand the
characteristics of a leader. Two of the most memorable leaders in world history are Queen Elizabeth I
and King Henry V who both shared the duty of ruler over England at some point in their life. Both
Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry V are held in high regard as a result of their accomplishments and
their over all success as a leader. This essay will discuss both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry V in
regards to their leadership, how they displayed leadership and the outcomes of their individual
leadership processes. In order to gain a sufficient understanding of a leader, or person in general, it is
important that you understand the background from which the person originated. A person s family
life and experiences as a young child are the building blocks for the foundation in which that person
refers to when making decisions. Queen Elizabeth I was born to the Tudor family on September 7,
1533 in Greenwhich to King Henry VIII and Anne Boelyn. Elizabeth was welcomed in to the world
by her parents and older sister Mary who was a product of King Henry VIII s first marriage to

United States are sexually active by age 24; correspondingly, the prevalence of high risk HPV peaks at
over 43% in the 20 24 age group (Vegunta, Kransdorf, Mayer, 2014). By age 30, the prevalence of
high risk HPV decreases to 30.4%, and continues to decrease as age increases. It is thought that this
age related decrease in prevalence can be attributed to a combination of factors, including, decreased
exposure, resistance to reinfections, and HPV s self limiting nature (Alves Ribeiro et al., 2015;

I went to the same catholic school as my little brother that was from kindergarten to 8th grade. When
he was in 6th grade and I was in 8th grade my brother had transferred to a different private. Since I
still in the school he left sometimes when he had to go to my school events, the other kids would yell
at him for leaving our school and call him mean names and sometimes they would just talk about him
behind his back. I stood up for my brother when they would do this and I would tell them to stop. I felt
good standing up for him, there was no need to do what they were doing. I would have felt happier if

Sugar Beets And Its Effects On The United States
Sugar beets are grown throughout the world. Mostly where there are cooler temperatures and climates.
Sugar beets are grown in countries like China, United States, Russia, and Japan. Russia is the leading
producer of sugar beets with the United States trailing in third. Some of the states in the United States
that grow sugar beets are Nebraska, California, Colorado, Minnesota, and Wyoming. Some small
farmers have figured out that you can also grow sugar beets in some warmer climates as well. Farmers
have also figured out that sugar beets attract a lot of deer and now they are looking at feeding sugar
beets to livestock. Some sheep and cattle ranchers graze their sheep and cattle on their sugar beet crop.
The cattle will eat the leafy tops of the beets. But sometimes the cattle will eat some of the smaller
sugar beets and choke on them. The sugar beet tops can also be used as silage because it is an
excellent source of protein. Sugar beets are most commonly known as a commercial crop grown for
sucrose production. Sugar beets and sugar cane are two of the leading factors for sugar in the United
States. Sugar beets accounts for just over half of the sugar production. Sugar beets in the United States
are usually planted anywhere between April 20th to May 10th. It is said that if you wait till after May
10th, then your yields might fall. It takes about 90 to 95 days for sugar beets to reach maturity. The
ideal daytime temperatures are between 80 to 60 degrees and the ideal

Why I Am Interested Of Taking The Chromatin, Epigenetics,...
No man s knowledge can go beyond his experience , this statement by John Locke captures the
essence of why I am interested in taking the Chromatin, Epigenetics, and Gene Expression course. I
have always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. As a child I was always asking questions about why
or how things worked. I would always tinker with things, taking them apart and reassembling them. I
questioned pretty much everything and longed to be able to do experiments and find solutions to
unanswered questions on my own. In high school, I volunteered, participated in athletics, held
leadership roles in several clubs, and also worked part time. Despite my many extracurricular
activities, I never lost my thirst for knowledge and academic success remained my foremost goal. To
challenge myself I enrolled in the most advanced courses available and took classes offered from a
nearby community college, I graduated with both a high school diploma and an Associate s Degree.
Motivated by my life experiences, I began my collegiate career at Virginia Tech (VT) as a biological
sciences major. In short time I decided that I would pursue a dual degree, adding psychology on as
another major. It was at VT that I would get my first opportunities to further my experience alongside
my knowledge. This experience would come in the form of research. As a freshman I worked in the
laboratory of Dr. Karen Brewer. I conducted synthesis, purification and characterization of
organometallics and refined key

Essay on The Media Effects American Culture
The media is the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines that
reach or influence people widely. The growth of the media has spread vastly over the years. The media
is also known as a channel of mass communication. Mass Media incorporates all those mediums
through which information is distributed to the masses. These include advertisements, magazines,
newspapers, radio, television, and the Internet (Sebastian). The media introduces many new things to

People become consumed in this fame and money way of living that they will do whatever it takes to
be just like the rich (Coleman). The media puts the reality into things with a twist of any kind of story,
quote, or anything that appeals to the public. This showed Americans that the media can negatively
affect anyone s life forever.
The glorification of violence, drug abuse and other unhealthy habits has a major role in the outburst of
unfortunate incidents where children have gotten extremely violent and out of control. Be it the
advertisements touting products that promise a fairer skin or bods to die for or the television shows
and films, which portray violence, sexually explicit content and abusive language. There are music
videos and rock bands that give out the message that alcohol; drugs and sex are an inevitable part of
life. These ideals created by the media might not be necessarily appropriate (Manohar). There is this
media frenzy going on in America that not only teens are being affected, but also adults. There are
misleading commercials or articles in the newspaper that lead people to believe things that are not
true. Tabloids, television, and the internet will do anything to attract attention and for people to buy
whatever they are selling.
One the other hand, the media is a positive influence on the American culture as well. The media

Compare and contrast T-cell development with B-cell...
Introduction
The developmental routes for these cells are very complex and unique but there are similarities. B
cells produce antibodies to bind onto foreign bodies that have invaded the host organism; this allows
cells such as cytotoxic T cells will then destroy the infected cell/structure. On the other hand, T cells
such as T helper cells that secrete cytokines to control immune responses and cytotoxic T cells that
destroy pathogenic cells and structures.
B Cells

A lymphoid progenitor will begin to develop into a T cell if the Notch1 protein is overexpressed in the
cell. During the double negative 1 (DN) phase of development, the cells are migrating into the thymic
cortex as pro thymocytes from the bone marrow. They are yet to commit to a lineage so can still
mature into other types of T cell such as natural killer T cells, intraepithelial lymphocytes and
regulatory T cells. Also, the cells are yet to express CD4+ or CD8+ and only express c kit (CD117)
and CD25 on their cell membrane.
DN2 is a vital phase, it occurs in the subcapsular cortex of the thymus. It is here that the genes for the
gamma, delta and beta T cell receptor (TCR) chains [3] start their rearrangement process. The alpha
chain does not commence its rearrangement, as the recombinase machinery cannot reach its gene. In
this phase, cells fully commit to the T cell lineage and the expression of c kit and CD25 on their
membranes declines.
At the DN3 stage also in the subcapsular cortex, the thymocytes begin their development as αβ or γδ T
cells is made. This decision is made by the successful completion of the rearrangement of the β TCR
gene. If a cell chooses to become a γδ T cell, it finishes development here and enters the periphery.
Once this lineage choice has been made, the expression of CD25 is halted and the pre TCR is
expressed on the cell surface.
The DN4 phase is the last stage of early T cell development. Here, the alpha gene of

The Controversy Surrounding The Abortion Debate
To begin with, there has always been a huge issue with the topic of abortion, why? Well, it s a tough
subject and can get extremely emotional and very defensive. Honestly, people just need to open up
their eye s and understand that it s murder and not just a choice. It is murder because two can create a
blessing and the choice of aborting it, is more like a sacrifice for the reason a mother can t carry a
baby for nine months. Whether a person is a teen, young adult, or an adult and is in a horrible situation
that believes they cannot proceed with the pregnancy, they should know there are other options. Teens
aborting an unborn baby is not a choice and should be banned because it is wrong without parental

Of course a child does not have more rights than her mother. (The..). With that being said, both the
child and mother have the right to live, but the woman s right to live is not a problem because her life
is not in danger as her baby is.
Thirdly, aborting an unwanted baby is considered murder being to the fact that, a mother is sacrificing
that child s life for their own good because of the circumstances they are dealing with. Patrick
Johnston is director of the Association of Pro Life Physicians, a professional organization for
physicians who oppose abortion reported, It s a commandment that even mass murderers keep most of
the time. They just make an exception every now and then. The devil doesn t want to overthrow God s
law he just wants you to make an exception. Our exceptions to God s commandments, however, are
indeed a challenge to God s authority and an assault against His Word law. If you make an exception
to the commandment Thou shalt not murder then in that instance, you have violated it... (Abortion...).
On the other hand, supporters of abortion may argue that because it is their body they can have an
abortion without parental consent, that it is pro choice, and have other priorities. Cynthia Dailard and

Global Sleep Cycle
Sleep Function: Global and Local Regulation of Sleep Cycles
Introduction Sleep is commonly referred to as a global state, one which engages the entire nervous
system. The states of sleep and wakefulness are highly interconnected and share common
physiological mechanisms; however, there are distinct differences in the neurochemical pathways that
underlie them. The notion that sleep is a global state is supported by evidence that the interrelated
states of sleep and wakefulness engage a multitude of neuronal pathways and components. These
networks of neuronal transmitters and receptors extend throughout the brain; from the brainstem to the
basal forebrain, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cerebral cortex. The onset of sleep and wakefulness is

During states of arousal and wakefulness, information is encoded in the neocortical and hippocampal
networks in the form of memories (Frankland et al., 2005). The networks that are activated during
wakefulness are subsequently reactivated during SWS via SWA, which leads to synaptic downscaling
and memory consolidation. A study conducted by Peigneux and colleagues (2004) provided evidence
that presents a positive association between improvement in post sleep retrieval activity performance
and the amount of hippocampal SWA that an individual experiences during SWS. This study suggests
a correlation between the reactivation of wake active neuronal networks via SWA and memory
improvement during SWS. In addition to the overnight evaluation of memory consolidation, short
term evaluation of memory across the first day, which included a 90 minute sleep period between
training and performance of the retrieval activity, also demonstrated a positive correlation between the
amount of SWA that occurred during the sleep period and the success of the retrieval activity
performance (Peigneux et al., 2004). Moreover, a study conducted by Marshall and colleagues (2004),
also examined the manipulation of memory consolidation during sleep and found a positive
association between hippocampal SWA and the performance of a

Mushrooms are a good cash crop. It is easy to grow and is brimming with protein, B vitamins and
minerals. They even have medicinal properties. Time between spawning and harvesting can be as
short as three weeks. Furthermore, after the cultivation, you can still use the substrate as a good soil
conditioner. Generally the oyster, shiitake and wood ear mushrooms cultivated .Although many other
types of mushrooms can be grown, we have chosen oyster the ones that can easily be cultivated with
using appropriate technology. When we choose to grow mushroom we should know the basic
knowledge about mushroom. The biology, morphology, species, temperature ranges for fruiting, and
market to sell. The life cycle of mushroom (Fungi) multiply by producing millions and millions of
spores. When a spore settles in a suitable environment, it can germinate and branch to form a
mycelium. When two sexually compatible mycelia meet, they may fuse to form a so called secondary
mycelium, which is capable of forming fruiting bodies.
Mushroom cultivation activities can play an important role in supporting the local economy by
contributing to subsistence food security, nutrition, and medicine. Generating additional employment
and income through local, regional and national trade and offering opportunities for processing
enterprises.

Fifteen years ago (June 1,1999), the style of listening and sharing music has been completely
revolutionized by two teenagers, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. They created an online platform for
swapping music and named it NAPSTER. Thus began the era of online music. Though Napster was
initially a great success, their service was considered to be illegal and legal battles eventually ruined
Napster. However, online music industry continued to stay in light with companies like apple
providing legal ways to purchase and download music online.
In this paper, I wish to analyze and compare two major online music stores iTunes and Amazon MP3.
These online stores have totally transformed the way music is sold and purchased.
Founded by Steve Jobs in 2001, Apple s iTunes was the first company to enable legal downloading of
music. Though several other online music stores such as Rhapsody were available in the market, they
had certain limitations such as limited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
iTunes software created by Apple helps in managing and playing both audio and video files on an
iTunes compatible device. On taking into account the various kinds of innovations, I would categorize
iTunes as a Radical innovation. Radical innovations are the kind of innovations that provide
something new to an already existing idea and provide positive expectations to the users. Though

Examples Of Rivalry In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Have you ever had a controversial conflict or rivalry with another person? If so, the end of that
conflict or rivalry probably does not have a clear definite winner; however, In the novel One Flew
Over the Cuckoo s Nest by Ken Kesey, two main characters Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick
McMurphy, had an intensive rivalry with each other, but there was a clear winner in that: McMurphy
has won. McMurphy was ultimately the victor in his long rivalry with McMurphy because of the
support of his followers the patients, the patients were able to escape from evil (Nurse Ratched), and
McMurphy had his long term goal was met while the Nurse s failed to meet.
Firstly, McMurphy got the support of the patients while Nurse Ratched did not; ... Show more content

Even though some patients might have died such as Billy Bibbit, they still escaped from the Nurse
once they passed away by not having to deal with her any longer. McMurphy says Jesus, I mean you
guys do nothing but complain about how you can t stand it in this place here and then you haven t got
the guts just to walk out? What do you think you are for Christ sake, crazy or something? Well, you re
not! You re not! You re no crazier than the average asshole out walking around on the streets. this
shows his courage and willingness to take leadership to decide what he thinks is best for all the
patients and that is freedom. Furthermore, the patients were able to follow upon McMurphy s goal to
escape from the Nurse and made him and the patients winners over the Nurse because they got what
they were looking for which is freedom. Finally, McMurphy s long term goal was met while Nurse
Ratched s long term goal failed to meet her expectations. For comparison, McMurphy s goal since
getting into the hospital was to ensure every patient got their share and freedom including him because
he believes they were all capable of integrating back into society; Nurse Ratched s goal was to isolate
McMurphy and the patients to prevent them from achieving freedom back into society. In addition,
she was

  • 3. Why Merton s Anomie And Strain Theories Have Been... Robert Merton s anomie and strain theories have been regarded as a valuable analytical framework for studyieng deviant and criminal behaviors (Deflem, 2003). In 1938, Merton first presented his theory, which has become the springboard for plenty of subsequent theoretical discussions. His contributions on social structures and anomie has been frequently quoted and heralded as one of the most important theories in sociology. Although anomie and strain theory can be seen as an undisputed classic, the meaning and the status of his conceptualizations has continued to be debated over the years (Besnard, 1987 cited in Deflem, 2003). Some of the confusion over the limitation of Merton s theory is about whether these theories can explain crime in contemporary society (Cole, 1975 cited in Deflem, 2003). In this essay, I will argue that Merton s anomie and strain theories can be applied in contemporary society to a certain extent. It will focus on the cultural values in Australia. Australia is known as a first class country, which ranking the 10th in the World Happiness Report in 2015 (Wright, G 2016). Despite such statistics, increasing crime rate, especially Indigenous offending rate, is an ongoing problem for the whole of Australian agencies. From 1998 to 2007, the increasing rate of non Indigenous prisoner was 94 percent, while there was an astonishing 266 percent rising in Indigenous prisoner numbers (ABS 2007b, cited in Skinner, 2011). It is stated by SCATSIA (2011, cited in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pope Boniface Viii s Challenges To The King Pope Boniface VIII s Challenges to the Kingship of Philip s Pope Boniface VIII wrote the bulls, Clericis Laicos in 1296 and Unam Sanctam in 1302, to affirm and perform the papal supremacy over his ecclesiastical persons and the kings, Philip IV of France and Edward I of England. Both bulls consist of the decrees that restrain the rulers from enforcing their derogatory authority over Christians: one forbids prelates and churchmen to pay the tax that laymen heavily imposed on them: the latter one demands suspected clergies under the papal jurisdiction, furthermore insisting the pope s total authority over his churchmen in France. Philip had knocked off Clericis Laicos by depriving Boniface of a major revenue source, yet the pope again threw down the gauntlet against the rulers with the new threat of excommunication. Although both bulls indicate the similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Clericis Laicos , Boniface criticized and opposed to Philip for his unethical scheme to take over the churchmen s possession to continue his dishonest war with England. Since Philip needed a tremendous amount of money to prepare for the war, he overtaxed his people including clergies without any exception. However, Boniface considered Philip s preparation of the war as a plot to pursue his power over the church s possessions. Therefore, he denounced the king s overtaxation on the churchmen as though he suspected the king of striving to subject the churchmen to slavery and bring them under his control. (Robinson) However, Boniface mildly reacted to the heavy taxation on the clergies in which he merely forbade them to pay their tax rather than directly objecting to the king. With indignation toward Boniface s reaction, Philip threatened to jolt Apostolic Palace in an economical way. Therefore, it was inevitable for him to withdraw his hand from Clericis ... • 8. Dreams Are From The Book Your Soul Is Writing About You Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you Marsha Norman The Interpretation of Dreams was published by Sigmund Freud in the year 1900 as a thought provoking compilation of ideas surrounding the cognitive processes of dreaming. Although it has been translated and edited since its original publishing date, it reads as if to hold true to Freudian fashion; addressing levels of consciousness and their effects on how specific dreams are formed. Freud makes a clear and reverent effort to acknowledge others theories, as well as his own, in an attempt to explain the unexplainable. His focus throughout the text is to hypothesize on how regression, resistance, and censorship all play a delicate role in the remembrance and interpretation of ones dreams. It is Freud s skillful application of resistance and censorship that grants further contemplation of why dreams are so soon to fade and be forgotten upon awakening. It is also this application that guides the reader into how these two processes may require one to use free association to interpret such dreams. Resistance and censorship are explained by Freud as a cognitive process that happens due to the separation of waking and sleeping states. He presents the idea that while one sleeps, the cognitive censorship used throughout waking hours is significantly reduced, making dreams possible. However, immediately present upon awakening is mental resistance, resulting in the forgetting or fragmenting of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Lab Report Sample Essay Introduction The exposed roadcut east of the Doc Long Picnic area, about 9 miles north of the town of Cedar Crest on the east side of the Sandia Mountains, provided an exceptional site to study weathering processes. The exposed Precambrian Sandia Granite offered a place to collect data and test the hypothesis that biotite content, grainsize, and associated inclusions have influenced the amount of weathering that has occurred. The granite underlies the Great Unconformity and the Madera Formation, which is a carbonate succession with interbedded sandstones, Pennsylvanian in age. The granitic outcrop composed of the dominant minerals quartz, potassium feldspar (some plagioclase), and biotite (field book) displayed different degrees of weathering. Different weathering features in the exposure such as grussification, jointing, and corestones suggested that grain size and biotite content were not the only influences on weathering processes taking place. Methods Data collection for assessing our hypothesis consisted of making several observations along the exposed granite. The main observations noted included mineral composition, weathering rank, mean grain size, percent biotite, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the wisest man in all of ancient Greece, Socrates believed that the purpose of life was both personal and spiritual growth. He establishes this conviction in what is arguably his most renowned statement: The unexamined life is not worth living. Socrates makes it quite evident through the severity of the language in this claim, the extent to which he will live and die for this ideal. This is the point at which it begins to become a task to understand how the examined life is at all aligned with the quest of the principles justice and virtue, when in reality it just leads to a state of confusion. The skepticism found within Socrates logic leads us to realize that he has no claims that he has answers, yet he is living and dying for the ideal that an unexamined life is not worth living. There is no point at which Socrates is looking for followers, much like a prophet would look for disciples, for his ideals appeal to reason, not faith. Although this may be the case, he has left his contemporaries, ancient and modern day philosophers, as well as any other students of his teachings in a complete paradox. For centuries, many have attempted to carve out a middle path between the severity of his claim on the examined life, and the predestined state of doubt that surfaces with the search for justice and virtue. In Socrates attempt to live an examined life, he put forth efforts to improve society as a whole. His method consisted of elenchus, rather than that of preaching or lecturing, because it was more effective to allow his notion of human ignorance to surface through a dialogue than through a monologue of his claims. Socrates saw it his duty to lead a lifestyle in which he continued to unveil the false wisdom of his contemporaries. He considered his efforts to be a mere fulfillment of his obligation to the gods. • 20. Summary Of The Middle Class In Madame Bovary The middle class in France during the early 1800s, otherwise known as the Bourgeoisie, was defined by capitalistic views and business minded outlooks. However, many people of this era, including author Gustave Flaubert, were highly critical of this middle class. In Flaubert s novel Madame Bovary, the character Homais represents the ideas and spirit of the Bourgeoisie. Because of his dissatisfaction with the middle class, the author gives Homais several negative character traits, such as selfishness, cowardice, and hypocrisy. Flaubert s criticism of the egotistical and corrupt nature of Homais is evident during the procedure on Hippolyte and the argument between Homais and the priest; Homais triumph at the end of the novel suggests that Flaubert is also critical of the outcome of the pharmacist s actions, not just the actions themselves. Flaubert establishes Homais cowardice when he refuses to take responsibility for the failed operation on Hippolyte. Charles originally does not want to take part in this procedure, but Homais urges him to do so. After the operation is deemed a failure, Monsieur Canivet criticizes Charles to Homais when he says, But some doctors want to be smart, so they use all sorts of remedies on their patients without worrying about the consequences... and, ...we wouldn t dream of operating on someone who s in perfect health! (Flaubert 157). Even though Homais knows that he pressured Charles into performing this operation, he does not say anything to Canivet that expresses his partial responsibility. Flaubert writes, He therefore did not defend Bovary or make any comment at all; abandoning his principles, he sacrificed his pride to the more serious interests of his business (157). Therefore, Flaubert criticizes the spineless nature of Homais by emphasizing his lack of response to Canivet s insults. The author reveals Homais character trait of irresponsibility in this scene, suggesting that Flaubert views the Bourgeoisie as cowardly. Homais and the middle class, in the mind of Flaubert, are too craven to be held accountable for any action that would hurt their reputations. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing: No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is. It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. The Massachusetts Model Of Healthcare Reform THE MASSACHUSETTS MODEL OF HEALTHCARE REFORM The Massachusetts model is considered by many to be the blueprint for the national health care reform. It was introduced in the year 2006 and was fully implemented by 2010. The state previously had a free care pool through which it funded the health care given to people who were uninsured and ineligible for Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance. The then federal government insisted that either the state reduced this funding or it lost $385 million in Medicare funds (Lizza, 2011, June 6). The uninsured population in the state at that time was 10.9%, which was much less than the national average of 15.8% (Day Nardin, 2011) making the state relatively more suitable for any health ... EMPLOYER SPONSORED INSURANCE: Any employer with more than 10 employees was required to provide them with health insurance and also to contribute a reasonable sum towards their costs or he had to pay a penalty of up to $295 per employee annually. The revenue generated through this would be used to cover costs of reform INSURANCE EXCHANGE: They created an independent, easy to understand health insurance exchange, called the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority. It provided citizens with different insurance options and helped them make the appropriate choices. This agency also managed the Commonwealth Care and the Commonwealth Choice programs. No man s knowledge can go beyond his experience , this statement by John Locke captures the essence of why I am interested in taking the Chromatin, Epigenetics, and Gene Expression course. I have always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. As a child I was always asking questions about why or how things worked. I would always tinker with things, taking them apart and reassembling them. I questioned pretty much everything and longed to be able to do experiments and find solutions to unanswered questions on my own. In high school, I volunteered, participated in athletics, held leadership roles in several clubs, and also worked part time. Despite my many extracurricular activities, I never lost my thirst for knowledge and academic success remained my foremost goal. To challenge myself I enrolled in the most advanced courses available and took classes offered from a nearby community college, I graduated with both a high school diploma and an Associate s Degree. Motivated by my life experiences, I began my collegiate career at Virginia Tech (VT) as a biological sciences major. In short time I decided that I would pursue a dual degree, adding psychology on as another major. It was at VT that I would get my first opportunities to further my experience alongside my knowledge. A lymphoid progenitor will begin to develop into a T cell if the Notch1 protein is overexpressed in the cell. During the double negative 1 (DN) phase of development, the cells are migrating into the thymic cortex as pro thymocytes from the bone marrow. They are yet to commit to a lineage so can still mature into other types of T cell such as natural killer T cells, intraepithelial lymphocytes and regulatory T cells. Also, the cells are yet to express CD4+ or CD8+ and only express c kit (CD117) and CD25 on their cell membrane. DN2 is a vital phase, it occurs in the subcapsular cortex of the thymus. It is here that the genes for the gamma, delta and beta T cell receptor (TCR) chains [3] start their rearrangement process. The alpha chain does not commence its rearrangement, as the recombinase machinery cannot reach its gene. In this phase, cells fully commit to the T cell lineage and the expression of c kit and CD25 on their membranes declines. At the DN3 stage also in the subcapsular cortex, the thymocytes begin their development as αβ or γδ T cells is made. This decision is made by the successful completion of the rearrangement of the β TCR gene. If a cell chooses to become a γδ T cell, it finishes development here and enters the periphery. Once this lineage choice has been made, the expression of CD25 is halted and the pre TCR is expressed on the cell surface. The DN4 phase is the last stage of early T cell development. The states of sleep and wakefulness are highly interconnected and share common physiological mechanisms; however, there are distinct differences in the neurochemical pathways that underlie them. The notion that sleep is a global state is supported by evidence that the interrelated states of sleep and wakefulness engage a multitude of neuronal pathways and components. During states of arousal and wakefulness, information is encoded in the neocortical and hippocampal networks in the form of memories (Frankland et al., 2005). The networks that are activated during wakefulness are subsequently reactivated during SWS via SWA, which leads to synaptic downscaling and memory consolidation. A study conducted by Peigneux and colleagues (2004) provided evidence that presents a positive association between improvement in post sleep retrieval activity performance and the amount of hippocampal SWA that an individual experiences during SWS. This study suggests a correlation between the reactivation of wake active neuronal networks via SWA and memory improvement during SWS. In addition to the overnight evaluation of memory consolidation, short term evaluation of memory across the first day, which included a 90 minute sleep period between training and performance of the retrieval activity, also demonstrated a positive correlation between the amount of SWA that occurred during the sleep period and the success of the retrieval activity performance (Peigneux et al., 2004).
