Essay Explain the Platonic Concept of Forms
Explain the Platonic concept of Forms.
Plato believed that reality is more than what we sense around the world (e.g. taste, smell, hear, see and
touch), he believed that behind these physical realities lies a perfect version of them in which he called
Forms and that the greatest thing we can learn is to have knowledge and understanding of them. Plato
s theory means that what we can sense around us (for example a chair) is just a mere shadow of the
perfect version which exists in the world of Forms. The perfect version of a chair is one in which for
fills its purpose e.g. to be comfortable and to be sat on. Plato believed that everything had a perfect
Form, from objects such as pens and books to things such as beauty and justice. He ... Show more

This can be traced backwards to every single item that is in the real world creating an infinite
regression, and therefore we have to ask ourselves, how big is the world of Forms?
Another reason why is it true to say that Forms teach us nothing about the real world is the queries of
the Form of evil. If the Forms are perfect versions and what we have in the world of our senses are
just mere shadows, how much worse can the evil get? And do we therefore really want to thrive to
become the perfect philosopher if it means experiencing that? For example, if Hitler caused so much
pain and suffering to so many people during the Holocaust, do we really want to go through that but of
a worse/bigger scale in the world of Forms? And also in what form are is the evil in? In the form of
famine and disease, murder and genesis or something much worse.
Aristotle, another famous philosopher, argued against Plato s well known theory of Forms and stated
that what we seen and experience is material whilst universals are only abstract projections of this.
This completely contradicts Plato s theory and so do many other philosophers such as Thomas
Aquinas. However, whilst it is possible that one of these theories are right there is no evidence to
support it which is another one of the theories floors.
Another common criticism of Plato s theory is that although the Form of good has had an influence of
Christian teachings and theology, it is extremely difficult to see how

about herself and her social life by showing us the clothes, the jewelry , and all the luxurious things
she would wear, as also discuss in our textbook. As mentioned before, the events in the textbook
mainly focused on the presentation of the French Revolution rather than the life of Mary Antoinette. It
only mentioned a few facts about her that contributed to the French Revolution. However in the
movie, I got to know more about her personal life, her relationship with her parents, brother, and
husband. I also got to know the problems she faced other than the ones related to the revolution. The
movie did a great job covering the aspects of her life but not the aspects of the French

New Housing Advantages And Disadvantages
WHO BENEFITS? New transport infrastructure creates value and there are many stakeholders who
benefit from well places and designed transport infrastructure. To seek a portion of this newly created
value, you firstly need to identify and beneficiaries. Existing residents as many studies have proven,
property prices increase once a major new transport infrastructure is announced. Residents do not need
to wait for the infrastructure to be built, as prices have been shown to increase as early as the initial
announcement. Residents all benefit from reduced congestion, faster and more reliable journey times,
improved quality of life. Research showed that Melbourne s City Link had created increased land
value of $30 billion. The Southern Railway in Perth showed that there was an uplift in value over 5
years by 42% above base value uplift for properties in station precincts. For every kilometres a
dwelling in Brisbane was located in proximity of a ferry terminal there was an increase of 4% in price.
In London research found that property within easy reach of a station was worth on average 20,000
pounds more than other properties. Another benefit New residents will benefit in purchasing a home in
a newly developed area, without having to pay premium city prices with the ability to commute in a
reasonable time to the CBD with the creation of a new railway line. Ongoing benefits will be achieved
with new areas providing a much needed economic activity leading to market

The Problem Of Sick Building Syndrome
Introduction There are a number of companies every year that fall victim to slow production rates
because of employees that become ill with sick building syndrome, decreasing their overall profit.
Sick building syndrome is basically declared when a number of workers become sick in a specific part
of a building, and their symptoms can be related directly back to air pollutants. These air pollutants are
broken up into different categories, but the sources can be anything such as things outside the
building; (vehicle exhaust emissions, biomass by products, etc.) which can enter the building through
windows or poorly placed air vents. Or even things inside the building such as adhesives, carpeting,
copy machines, pesticides, etc. That are known as volatile organic compounds or VOCs that can have
a huge effect not only on humans, but plants as well. (Sumedha, J) This is why it is important to pay
more attention to how big each individual s eco footprint gets! By the end of this report, the
importance of being aware will be understood. History/Origin The presence of air pollutants and
climate change are no new topic. Back in the 18th century, the use of burning coal was at a high.
During the industrial revolution, the use of coal was immense and cities air pollutions levels were near
what they are today. The documentation of smog (gas and smoke) goes back as far as 1875 when the
Public Health Act contained a smoke abatement section to reduce the smoke in

Disaster Recovery Plan It 244 Week 3 Essay
Disaster Recovery Plan Paper
Fernando Hernandez
IT244/Axia College
Introduction
In this assignment, I will go over the different items related to the disaster recovery plan. I will go
over the purpose of the plan, explain the key elements that go into a plan, the methods of testing the
plan, and why we test the plan. All while explaining why the disaster recovery plan is so critical to
businesses in the event of an emergency.
What is the purpose of a Disaster Recovery Plan?
The purpose of the disaster recovery plan is to ensure the process of recovering mission critical
systems has a plan of action in case of a disaster. The disaster recovery plan makes sure all the steps to
bring up the critical to less critical systems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The five methods of testing a disaster recovery plan are providing a walk through, setting up
simulations, having checklists, parallel testing, and making a full interruption test. The walk through
helps test the plan by finding things more important or irrelevant that can be added or omitted from
the plan. Simulations provide practice sessions of what a disaster would or could do to a business.
Simulations also show the plan when it is put into effect. Checklists provide a list that each
department uses to check off tasks completed. Parallel testing is a clone system that runs with the
main system until the main system is ready to come back online. Full interruption will stop the
production systems fully and start them back up to see the programs work or fail.
Why does a DRP require testing?
A disaster recovery plan requires testing so that all things are planned ahead of time and ready to go in
the case of an emergency. New items or untrained personnel can come into the business and need to be
added to the plan. This will need to be tested also to ensure it is covered when an emergency happens.
In addition, everything on the plan may look good when in writing but until the plan is used in a real
situation, the business will never know if it works properly. Testing the plan in a simulation disaster
scenario is the best way to know how objects and people react to the situation.

Communication Is A Form Of Symmetrical Communication
Communication can come in various forms. A person can write, speak, or even use American Sign
Language to communicate. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to
receive feedback. To name a couple, two way asymmetrical and two way symmetrical communication
are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical Communication happens when
professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their opinions about certain things. However,
this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use research to help them persuade their
publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a form of balance to it and can lead
publics to change their attitudes on their own.
I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is
an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non professional) is able to publish
their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting. Usually
blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but no one has
read. However, well known bloggers or blog sites, like Perez Hilton, TMZ, Mashable, and my
personal favorite, The Shade room are all somewhat reliable sources. Many of these are digital media.
These are people and/or their sites that receive a ton of feedback from their blog posts. The Shade
Room in particular usually posts updates and breaking news on celebrities,

Harm Reduction Approach
A New Harm Reduction Approach
An understanding of addiction must remain broad: addiction as a possible consequence of the human
desire to alter consciousness; a chief public health concern for its dramatic negative impact on society
through the destructive behaviors of the addiction; a chronic, relapsing, biopsychosocial disorder that
cannot be understood apart from social context not simply as a brain disease (Hammer et al., 2013). It
is much more than a brain disease and everyone deserves to be treated for their individual issues
and/or traumas. The challenge of providing quality care for the addicted is layered not only with

As we discussed in class MI is all about arranging conversations so that people talk themselves into
change, based on their own values and beliefs. By giving the client s a safe place to do this we are
ensuring that they can work towards what they want. By being able to empathize, validate, and accept
these clients where they are at and take the time to see where they want to be we are helping them to
grow. Working collaboratively to evocate and be a partner on this journey is what makes this treatment
so important for those suffering from trauma and addiction issues. This does not mean that it will be
an easy task for instance when challenging discrepancies and facing client s resistance, but it will be
rewarding to help them get closer to where they want to be. By providing encouragement and praise
we are promoting a safe supportive place for self efficacy to foster. Once we are able to address,
normalize, and pass the ambivalence stage we are able to get to the real work by being a trusted
member of their team. For me, this is done by being a passenger in their care and they are the driver
taking us where we need to go. Using a less directive approach and using the OARS technique is the
best way to do this in my experience. Being a real and genuine person is the best way to allow this
process to take place as it is supposed

Ludovic clearly doesn t enjoy laying the sport, and he isn t very good at it. We constantly see him
lying on the ground. The reason he is playing the sport though is because his father loves it, and thinks
that it s something that normal boys do. Everyone around him comes on so strong with their gender
request that it almost seems that they are like a military if sorts. Their belief is you will act like you
are supposed to act or we won t give you the affection that a kid deserves. This notion is something
that his parents struggle with throughout the film. It seems that they really do love him, but they just
can t wrap their mind around the fact their son really thinks he is a girl.
I felt that this film showed two different ways of seeing things. First there s the way a children see the
world. Kids are able to create dream worlds where they are able to live out their fantasies. Ludovic s
world involves his favorite TV character, a Barbie like character named Pam. Pam is a princess of
sorts; she flies around in a pink dress with a magic wand. In this world Ludovic acts like her assistant.
It is clear that he wants to be just like her. On the other hand there is the view of the adults. They tend
to see things more for what they really are. They don t act very well around someone who may be a
little different from them. This is most evident in the way that Ludovic s father s boss acts. Ludovic is

Essay about Conflicts in Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club
Joy Luck Club Conflicts Many Misconceptions and Delusions Conflicts play a crucial role in novels.
Without conflict, novels would be uninteresting and very dull. Conflicts are seen in many different
forms, as internal conflicts, when a character must deal with private problems, and external conflicts,
when a character must deal with problems originating from an external source, like another person or
society in general. Some common conflicts seen in other novels are person versus society, as in The

about Rich, and they begin to get along better. Both must sacrifice a little pride to make the
relationship work, but as they both do so, they grow closer and their relationship becomes stronger as
a result. The second prominent conflict visible within this novel is between Lindo and Suyuan. These
two women are supposedly best friends, yet their constant bickering and competition, which their
children deem as normal , seems to negate this fact. June, Suyuan s daughter, seems to know the truth:
Auntie Lin and my mother were both best friends and arch enemies who spent a lifetime comparing

and their children, both believing that they were superior to the other. Suyuan and Lindo both believe
that their own cooking skills greatly exceed the other s. Lindo seems to be the best cook of the two of
them, considering that she learned to cook so well

Kant s Moral Judgement Of Moral Luck
Michaela Brester
Elwonger
Intro to Philosophy
9 October 2015
Kant believed that good or bad luck should influence neither our moral judgment of a person and his
actions, nor his moral assessment of himself. Thomas Nagel Thomas Nagel, Professor of Philosophy
at New York University developed the current philosophical idea of Moral luck. Kant denied the
possibility of moral luck but Nagel created the idea of moral luck based on Kant s opposition. As
quoted above, Kant thought that luck should not be the basis of judgement. He would have said that
actions would be criticized if they turned out bad. However, by luck it can turn out well. Kant s view
appears incorrect but it answers the problem about moral responsibility to which we possess no
satisfactory solution . (Nagel 440) The problem of moral luck is unsettling to the philosophical world.
Throughout this reflection, the concepts of moral luck, the plausible responses to the problem and the
objections to the problem will be discussed. The principle of moral luck is substantial yet debatable,
therefore, there are many responses, of which I believe incoherence to be the most plausible one. First,
we discuss will. Nagel thinks that we make judgments on people when they have no control over their
situation or the factors affecting them. When we do accuse someone of something, we are judging
them. Even if someone is in a bad situation, Nagel wants us to recognize that it does not mean their
existence is bad .

Introduction
Water is essential for all living things to survive. Without water, life would be impossible. Seventy
percent of the world is covered by water but only 2.5 percent is fresh water. (1) Not only is freshwater
used for domestic and personal purposes, it is also used for irrigation, thermoelectric, industrial and
agriculture. (2) Although freshwater seems to be untarnished, it regularly contains a variety of solutes
ranging from gas in the environment to inorganic salts and minerals of rocks. Due to the ions
dissolved, the water has a possibility to be hard or soft.
Water hardness is defined as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. (2) In
order to have hard water, calcium (Ca^(2+)) and magnesium (Mg^(2+)) need to have a high
concentration of both ions dissolved into the water. Depending on the amount of dissolved minerals,
water hardness has the possibility of being detected without actually experimentally testing for it.
Have you ever felt like you still had residue on your hands after washing with soap? This is the effect
of the calcium ions reacting with the soap. These effects have no effects for humans when drinking
this water but industries worry about their water s hardness for one main reason.
Studying water hardness is important because

Taking The Castle of Otranto as your example, outline the main conventions of the Gothic novel, and
show how your knowledge of these conventions affects your reading of Northanger Abbey. Is
Northanger
Abbey most accurately described as parody of the Gothic genre, or is there a more complicated
relationship going on?
Gothic novels purport to revive old stories and beliefs, exploring personal, psychical encounters with
the taboo (Williams, 2000). The genre, as typified by The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole,
involves a beautiful innocent young woman who is held captive by an older, powerful, evil ... Show

There are three gothic like aspects to the novel. The first is the character of the General as gothic
villain, patriarch and usurper and the Abbey as his gothic residence; the second is the exploration of
the dead mother s bedroom; and the final incident involves Catherine s expulsion from the Abbey.
Both the latter incidents end in very ordinary, anti climactic ways, in contrast to gothic stories. The
narrator also contrasts other ordinary incidents, with how they might have developed in a gothic
novel; for example, Catherine s journey to
Bath is accomplished with suitable quietness and uneventful safety.
Neither robbers nor tempests befriend them, nor one lucky overturn to introduce them to the hero
(Austen, 1933, p19).
Many commentators have concluded that Northanger Abbey is a parody of the Gothic genre. Whether
or not one agrees with this view depends on the definition of parody that one accepts. The Penguin
Dictionary of
Literary Terms Literary Theory offers the following relevant defining concepts: The imitative use of
the words, style attitude, tone and ideas of an author in such a way as to make them ridiculous.

The analysis of two outstanding artworks: The Divine Shepherdess and Child with Saint John the
Baptist and an Angel The art works in the art center provides a broad range of artistic visions from
different period of times as well as various cultural backgrounds. Among them I choose two religious
painting as my favorite: The Divine Shepherdess, from 1780 1800, which is an oil painting on canvas;
and Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini s Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an
Angel, from 1518 1520. The latter one is also an oil artwork, but on panel, not on canvas. According
to the annotate of The Divine Shepherdess, the theme source comes from the words of Saint Antoine,
who said: Mary is the Good Shepherd who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the bottom right corner, John the Baptist has been depicted as infant at seemingly the same age as
Child Jesus. Saint John raises his arm, with a scroll bearing the first few words of the phrase ECCE.
AGNVS DEI QVI TOLLIT PECCATUM MONDI (Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins
of the world). In this artwork, we are not able to see the whole phrase but several letters among them,
but it is definitely presenting the same words. The pleasure on Saint John s face while looking at the
scroll foretells his devotion in the future as a Baptist. An angel standing next to the Virgin looks at the
Child Jesus, who looks over his shoulder. The caring face of the angel indicates Jesus s sacrifice is
praised not only by the common people, but holy figures. The background is mainly dark grey, makes
the figures at the front to stand out. Personally, I think the painting is aesthetically attractive because
of the special style of the artist. Realistic are the faces of the figures, which look like real human with
beauty appearance, and their bodies. Idealistic elements include the glowing casts on the Virgin, the
Child Jesus, and Saint John the Baptist, and the sacredness the artist tries to convey through the image.
These two painting, The Divine Shepherdess and Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and
an Angel, have various similarities and

Children s Emergent Literacy Development
The type of (HLE) a child is in can significantly impacts a child s emergent literacy development.
(Senechal, Lefevre, Thomas , Daley, 1996; Sawyer, et al., 2014; Sénéchal LeFevre, 2002; Senechal
LaFevre, 2014). HLE is defined by the frequency of storybook reading and literacy teaching during
book reading (Sawyer, et al., 2014, p. 65). Sénéchal LeFevre (2002 2014) conducted a study to prove
that a positive and helpful HLE aids in children s emergent literacy. The Home Literacy Model used
proved the original hypothesis. There was a statistically significant predictor of parent s creating a
positive HLE and frequency of shared book reading that positively correlated to the child s literacy
abilities for the beginning of grade 1. Shared book reading comprises 4% of the significant differences
with the child s vocabulary. The formal literacy measures presented by the parents like, actively
listening to the child read and the method the parent uses to teach, was deemed most helpful as a
predictor for the child s reading abilities by the end of grade 1. The study concluded that a positive
HLE promoted growth within the child s vocabulary and word reading skills (Sénéchal LeFevre, 2002;
Senechal LaFevre, 2014).
Important factors that contribute to a positive HLEs to children with emerging literacy vary. Typical
predictors of high quality HLE are seen through the number of children books in the home, the
amount of library visits attended with the child, the

The Abrahamic Covenant

Old Testament History
Emma Dodsworth
Explain how Gods promise to Abraham is gradually outworked in the Old Testament culminating in
the coming of Christ
God s relationship to man has been defined by specific requirements and promises, divinely imposed
by God, unchangeable, legal agreement between that stipulates the conditions of their relationship.
Man can never negotiate with God or change the terms of the covenants; he can only accept or reject
them.
God s response to the rebellion at Babel was to choose a man called Abraham. Abraham was a man
that loved and worshipped the one true God. So God told Abraham to get away from the idolatrous
people around him, to get away from his family and his father s house and go to ... Show more content

The Israelites reach the borders of the Promised Land and Moses reviews the people s history in the
wilderness and pleads with them to be faithful to the law and to be obedient after they posses the land.
Moses is old by this time and he stresses the covenant made between God and Israel through
Abraham, Moses and the people reaffirm the covenant and reminding them of the blessings that will
come if the people are obedient. The Lord will not allow Moses to cross the river Jordan with them
and Joshua becomes his Successor.
Joshua leads the people into the Promised Land through taking Jericho by divine instruction. Joshua is
obedient to Gods instructions and the walls fall down and Jericho is conquered. However, the people
continue to be unfaithful to God: Achan takes devoted things from Jericho, and Joshua launches an
attack on Ai without God s instruction resulting in defeat at Ai and the stoning of Achan.
The land that has been conquered is allotted to the twelve tribes of Israel as instructed by God. Joshua
reminds the people of the covenant asking them which God they will serve, the people have been
blessed through Gods promise to their forefathers and Joshua renews the covenant with God with the
people at Shechem. As Joshua dies Israel has only partly conquered the Promised Land due to Israel s
disobedience to God:

commemorate George Washington and his wife Martha Dandridge. The land once belonged to George

Theme Of The Dream In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Unlike modern society, in the past, especially in Elizabethan times, your privileges were not as
widespread. This included your decision to marry the spouse of your choice. In Elizabethan England,
you married the spouse of your parents choice or faced harsh legal consequences. This could include:
death, exilement, or becoming a nun. Now ,in modern society, parents still have expectations for their
children s spouse. If their children disobey, they may face personal consequences, but in America and
England, there is legal freedom to choose your spouse. An example of this is the article Bringing
Home the Wrong Race . In this article, an Asian man brings home a Caucasian girl. At first his parents
disapprove, but with time she is accepted. In contrast, in A Midsummer Night s Dream, Hermia is in
love with Lysander, but her father disapproves and will not budge. These three stories, A Midsummer
NIght s Dream, Bringing Home the Wrong Race , and Women in Tudor England , all have similarities
and differences that make them alike but unique. Despite their creation being centuries apart, these
stories have a lot in common. The main point that is shared between the three is that children bring
home a boyfriend or girlfriend that their parents do not approve of. In A Midsummer Night s Dream,
Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father, Egeus, disapproves of this and wants her to marry
Demetrius because in those times the parents had the legal final say in their children s

Regionalism and it s Effect on a Unified Canadian Identity
The concept of regionalism has been used to show the social, economic, and political
differences that exist between the regions of Canada since the days of confederation.
Historically, Canada has developed in different manners depending on the location, leaving a
region much different from another. One of the major reasons for this can be seen through the
geography of this country. The natural land forms which are present in Western Canada, such as
the prairies, are much different from say the coastal proximity, for example, of Atlantic Canada.
The climate in relation to the different geographical characteristics of Canada attributes to the
different life styles in these regions, ultimately changing their identities. This causes ... Show more

Most specifically the difference would have to be the cultural
difference of language. Since the beginning of this country Quebec has fought for the
preservation of the French language and culture and thus the protection of such makes for a
different perception of Canadian identity. Every other region in Canada feels that the government
policies unequally allow Central Canada s economy, primarily Ontario s, to dominate. As the
saying goes everyone in Canada hates Ontario and everyone in Ontario hates Toronto. The
different class levels make other regions apathetic about the progress most specifically, financial
progress in Central Canada.
When analyzing the West region of Canada two groups emerge one being the Prairies of
Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and the other being the mountainous area of British
Columbia.
The economy of the prairies includes manufacturing such as food machinery, transportation
equipment, metal products and clothing, food and chemical products, as well as the countries
largest agricultural industry including livestock and grains. Most recently the province of
Alberta s economy has seen the most growth on a percentage basis in Canada. Historically
people of this region are known as being farmers. Although there are many non farmers in this
area, agriculture can be seen in the culture of these people. As well political

The Color Green In The Scarlet Letter Essay
When you see the color green, there are many things you could think of. You might think of a stop

meanings depending on who you are. Anything can be a symbol of multiple things, prompting you to

excuse to take Pearl away from her. Hester says, Had they taken her from me, I would willingly have

(page 115) Without Pearl, Hester would be far gone. Luckily, the Governor was unable to come up
with a good enough reason to take Pearl away, and he never did try again. Pearl gives Hester a reason
to live correctly and a reason to hope. Because she was brought into the world in an act of adultery,
the sight of her constantly reminds her mother of the sins of her past, which reminds her to do right.
Not only is Pearl a symbol of salvation, at least of Hester s salvation, she is a sign of hope and the

The themes in the Scarlet Letter are strongly shown through Pearl. One of the strongest themes is love,
and Pearl is the best place to find examples of love. Her very existence is a result of the love between
Hester and Arthur, and even though this is a partially sinful love, it is pure and it is

Thinking Is A Way That People Make Decisions
Thinking Thinking is a way that people make decisions. They think in black and white and don t like
the gray areas. Thinkers tend to be task oriented, brief, and businesslike (Thinking vs. feeling, n.d.).
People who prefer thinking over feeling prefer to form their opinions after thoroughly analyzing
problems. They try to understand assumptions and figure out what could be the consequences of
actions before they get to them. Their main concern is how decisions will affect the bottom line.
Thinkers like debates because they believe it brings issues to the table and the group can talk them out
and come to conclusions. They expect other people s arguments to build to a conclusion and not just
be a ramble. They try to treat everybody equally, but also use their authority when determining how
new things will be implemented (Hammer, 2015). They can come off as cold because they don t
consider other people s emotions when making decisions (Collins, n.d.). By having this kind of
outlook, it can cause many problems. Sometimes thinkers are too focused on supporting their own
position and don t listen to their colleagues. Thinkers can sometimes are too aggressive in stating their
opinions or asking questions that come off as attacking others. They can also be thought of as failing
to appreciate the hard work and effort that other people have put into projects. To help thinkers get
along and be productive in the workplace, thinkers can look for a common ground so that both sides of

Analysis Of Saskia Sassen, A Leading Globalization Scholar
Saskia Sassen argues that for one to understand the contemporary globalization, it is crucial for an
individual to examine how the historical assemblages of authority, territory and right have been
remade and reworked on. (Sassen, 2006) The ideas of Saskia Sassen, a leading globalization scholar,
are helpful in the analysis of the debate about the movement of refugees in the wake of the Paris
attacks. Saskia stipulates that something really big is happening behind globalization. (Sassen, 2006)
She is interested at the point where globalization gets messy. Although globalization is good for the
economy, there are other things that get associated with it eliciting a debate on the opening and closing
borders for the refugees in the wake of Paris attack. As the states are trying to implement the cross
border policies, whether they are as a result of the international human rights regimes or the global
economic system, they have undergone some vital transformations since this kind of accommodation
requires negotiation. For the global economy, this particular negotiation involves developments inside
the national states and entails legislative acts, executive orders, court rulings and policy making
mechanisms. Citizenship, the fundamental institution that qualifies one to be a member of a nation, is
being destabilized partly by the present developments connected with globalization. Certain major

Technique And Rationale For Selection

Marc 1 Realty is a real estate company located in the Charlotte Metro area of North Carolina. This
company has grown from only serving two of the smallest counties in the area to becoming one of the
largest real estate firms in the metropolitan area over the past twenty years (Mosteller, 2015; Trulia,
Inc., 2015). The company successfully thrived during the economic recession and is now facing a
steadily improving market (Mosteller G. , 2015; Koepke, 2015; Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond,
2015). As seen from the SWOT analysis and balanced scorecard previously analyzed, the company
has seen success in many of its critical success factors, including sales, customer satisfaction,
productivity, and innovation (Mosteller J. , 2015). This does not mean that the company needs to stop
innovating and seeking new ways to grow its customer base. A company should always continually
seek to better itself, or it will slowly fall behind its competitors and not realize this is occurring until it
is too late.
Though companies have a broad range of different contemporary management techniques that they
can use to respond to the contemporary business environment, benchmarking appears to be the
technique by which Marc 1 Realty should seek to better itself. A combination of low information

technique the most appropriate at this stage of the company s life

seemed to be the only friendly face to him, even if it was poultry. This was desperately needed for the

Granpa Chook defecates in the Judge s mouth(Page 47) in a bit of an unfortunate accident that occurs
during the torture. The leader of this particular branch of the Nazi party was far from pleased, and
ordered his Stormtroopers to execute their prisoner for such an egregious offence. Before the
makeshift firing squad shot Granpa Chook, Peekay was seized by panic. Kill me! [he] begged Please
kill me. But don t kill Granpa Chook! (Page 49) and was hit in the stomach by a shot from the Judge
in response. After a salvo of slingshot fire, Granpa Chook, the best damn chicken in the world, was
dead (Page 49.) Peekay s appreciation and high regard for his friend are demonstrated by the epithet
given. It surely was gutting for Peekay to see his best friend killed right next to him, and for the first
time, he realized the ultimate level of cruelty: murder of a defenseless individual. Moreover, his
willingness to sacrifice himself for others appears first here but is not a one time occurrence. It was a
recurring reminder of his bravery and loyalty. Within a couple of years, his bravery is exhibited again.

Old Dudley Character Analysis
There are only a few paragraphs between the previous example and the next flashback. This time,
readers are introduced to Old Dudley s closest friend from the south, Rabie. Yet, this friendship with a
black man is one Old Dudley controlled. We see this automatically when Old Dudley remembers
fishing with his friend. Page five states, He and Rabie would start out early Wednesday morning and
fish all day. Rabie would find the spots and row; Old Dudley always caught them...And he would
giggle and shift the boat downstream. That was Rabie. He could steal cleaner than a weasel but he
knew where the fish were. Old Dudley always gave him the little ones (O Connor). While this first
line of the two fishing all day has a nostalgic, sentimental feel and image, the next line ... Show more

Old Dudley gets to do the fun part catch the fish while Rabie giggles and steers the boat downstream
to another spot. This image is clear: Old Dudley has taken on the role of the master. Rabie submits.
The last image we are left with is Old Dudley giving Rabie some of the fish he had helped him catch.
However, they were the little ones. O Connor could have left this detail out, saying Old Dudley gave
Rabie some of the fish. But the image of the smaller fish is essential to Old Dudley s character. He
was able to choose which fish to give Rabie. Choice often means privilege and control. Old Dudley
had both of these and in seeing these Wednesday fishing trips as clearly as we do, we understand why
Old Dudley has so much animosity toward his current living and social situation. He does not have
any friends in the New York City apartment. He has no one to control. The choices presented to him
are different: Will he accept the fact that all men are created equal and accept, in his heart, that a black
man can live in the same apartment as him and have as much control over his life as Old Dudley does

American History X Essay examples
American History X
American History X is clearly a film dealing with the social topic of racism. The interesting thing
about this film is the way in which the subject is presented. First of all, it is obvious that, though
racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any
reservations or dummying down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward
Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken,
charismatic and bright, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows
that it is not only the white, neo nazi racists who are fools for being involved in this, but all those who
hold hatred in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the young, black men were disgraced by the white male in a local game of basketball;
therefore, the black men go to do damage to the white males car, which in turn, leads to the white
male killing the young black men. It s a vicious circle with no end in sight.
The film also did a very good job in the way they tie racial issues in with the portrayal of Derek s
character as a strong and bold leader. The things that make Derek such a powerful and frightening
character is not the fact that he is racist, it is the fact that instead of choosing a somewhat regular,
backwoods, unintelligent racist as the films central character, Derek is well spoken and bright. It is
these qualities that allow him to recruit the youths of Venice Beach and form, with the help of his
mentor Cameron Alexander, the entire white supremacist culture permeating the area. Instead of just
telling them to hate black, Hispanic, and Asian people because they are of that race, he makes
speeches, telling them charismatically and passionately how these people are stealing their jobs,
causing Americans to suffer a poor standard of living. He tells them America needs to take care of
Americans before dealing with immigrants. And his speeches clearly incite this hatred in the young
people of that area and flare up their tempers, causing behavior, such as we see in the movie when
they destroy a grocery store because it was bought by a Korean immigrant who employs, 40 fuckin

Reflection Paper On Cheers
It was March 2017, and the tryout cheers had just been put on Moodle. I had already been practicing
my tumbling skills at Corner House for about five months, but I still wasn t confident with my skills.
We had cheer camp for the next week to go over the cheers and how the tryout process was going to
go. During the week I had gotten pretty good at the cheers but I lost my running tumbling from being
so nervous. This made me so scared for tryouts and I thought for sure I wasn t going to make the team,
especially compared to other girls who had outstanding tumbling skills. I knew that now I couldn t
rely on my tumbling to get me on the team so I focused on my jumps and cheers. It was the night
before tryouts and I couldn t sleep because of my nerves. Later that night at around 3:00 AM, I threw
up from thinking about it so much. I stayed up the rest of the night practicing my cheers as quietly as I
could without waking my sister or my parents up.
When it was finally time to go to the tryouts I was getting ready and now I was worried I was going to
be late even though I had plenty of time. While I was putting my hair up in a ponytail, I wasn t able to
get it up without hair sticking out on the sides. Once I realized I was just going to have to deal with it,
I started putting my bow in. I was rushing because I lost a lot of time with all the times of trying to get
my ponytail perfect. I was twisting my bow around for the third time to get a tight fit and the rubber

Culture And Culture In Maggie Walker s Everyday Use
Many times in life, it is required to make important decisions in tough situations, while other times
decisions are made quickly and easily. What is it that causes us to operate in a specific way or talk a
certain way in various situations? Although culture is often seen as the only factor of how we behave
and think, culture has just a moderate affect a person s mentality on the various situations in life. Parts
of a person s culture play a slight role in someone s ideas and actions. In the story, Everyday Use , a
mother and daughter are in a conflict over who will keep an old quilt, But they re priceless! Maggie
would put them on the bed and in five years they d be in rags (Walker 82). This excerpt provides the
reader with an example of both the power and the weakness of someone s cultural background. On the
strong end of culture, there is Maggie. Maggie is just like her mother and the rest of her family in the
sense that she is a home town and family oriented girl. However, her sister, Dee, was raised in the
same cultural environment, but has vastly different ideas and cultural perception. The cause of this
differentiation is due to factors outside of one s cultural background. Personality is a major reason for
the difference between the sisters, as both sisters have the same cultural roots, but are complete
opposites. The personality of a person greatly affects mentality and behavior. Although culture can
setup the foundation of views on life, it is personality that

The Philosophy Of Mind And The Body
Philosophy of mind had come across when philosophers had an idea of the concepts regarding the
human mind and its mysteries. This branch of psychology had intended to elaborate and study the
nature and aspects of the human mind, also how these concepts such as mental events, mental
functions and consciousness would connect to each other, through the human brain and body.
Philosophy of mind became one of the central areas of philosophy as the skills and abilities of
metalizing are used to treat individuals as the bearers of unobservable psychological states and
processes, and in order to anticipate and explain the individual s behavior in terms of states.
Dualism, a philosophy most defended by Rene Descartes, Believed that there are two concepts to
philosophy, regarding the mind and the body. Dualism, is possibly the oldest and the most intuitive of
the philosophies of mind, however within the modern psychology, this philosophy is a minority view
among psychologists. This theory states that the mental cannot exist outside of the body, and the body
is unable to think. It refers to reality as two distinct kind of things Mental and material things. Dualists
often believe in different concepts regarding how these would relate to each other. Dualists fall into a
variety of camps depending on how they would believe the mind and the body is related.
Interactionists see that the mental events have effects or can cause the physical effects. Epiphenomena
believe in a compromise

The Dangers Of Repressing The Id In Judith Guest s...
The Dangers of Repressing the Id:
An ACT Analysis of Judith Guest s Novel Ordinary People Unexpressed emotions will never die.
They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. This quote by Sigmund Freud
demonstrates the dangers of repressing or bottling up feelings and emotions. His notion of repression
is a commonly discussed topic in psychology, as its dangers can be undermined. Though some people
are fully capable of living with such repression, not having an outlet when facing difficult emotions
can lead to severe mental breakdowns ranging from sorrow to depression. The novel Ordinary People
by Judith Guest delves into repression by suggesting, from a Psychoanalytic perspective, that constant
repression of the Id psychic zone leads to the formation of multiple layers of dangerous defense
mechanisms which can only be controlled by active reversal during regression. Guest s intended
psychoanalytic theme can thus be approached by analyzing it in three separate segments, Conrad s
repression of his Id, Conrad s defense mechanisms and Conrad s regression. Firstly, Conrad s Id has
been nearly entirely repressed by his unconscious, leading him to lack the typical emotions that a
teenager of his age should be feeling. The Id is one of the psychic zones proposed by Freud and it can
be defined as humans unconscious source of instant gratification and animalistic emotions. It is
generally kept in harmony with other psychic zones in order to prevent it from

The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold
Many events in an individual s life can cause them to experience grief such as, losing a loved one, a
tragic event, or even a breakup. Being in denial is hard. When someone is in denial, they do not
exactly know what to think of the situation and they do not want to believe it. A person in denial will
act differently than someone who is not. They may not speak much, zone out often, and will not make
themselves presentable when going out into public. Alice Sebold wrote The Lovely Bones, which was
a book about a 14 year old girl, Susie, who was murdered on her way home from school by her
neighbor. Her entire family experienced grief from the tragic death. Susie watched down on her family
from heaven, and saw her mom abandoned her family and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abigail was self centered for making the decision she made. This moment demonstrates family
dynamic because even though they were once happy, Abigail s decision to leave has changed
everything. She does not want to deal with anyone but herself. Abigail compares to someone in
modern day in denial because people today still shut everyone else in their life out when they are
going through denial.
Lindsey handled denial better than the rest of her family members. She was old enough to handle it the
way she wanted to. It did not really hit Lindsey that her sister, Susie, was really gone until she went
into Susie s room for the first time since her death and realized that all of Susie s clothes were now
hers. Gosh , she said, whispering into the darkness of my closet. She realized with guilt and glee that
everything she saw before her was hers now (Sebold 106). This shows that Lindsey is in denial
because that is when she realizes that Susie will never be coming back to wear any of her clothes
again. Lindsey is strong when around her family, but when she is alone, that is when her true feelings
begin to hit her. This contributes to isolation because she isolates her feelings from her family and
only lets them show when she is alone. The only time Lindsey actually expressed some form of
emotion was when she was speaking to her principal, Mr. Caden, about playing soccer. Lindsey said, I
d say it would be pretty hard to play soccer on the soccer

  • 2. Essay Explain the Platonic Concept of Forms Explain the Platonic concept of Forms. Plato believed that reality is more than what we sense around the world (e.g. taste, smell, hear, see and touch), he believed that behind these physical realities lies a perfect version of them in which he called Forms and that the greatest thing we can learn is to have knowledge and understanding of them. Plato s theory means that what we can sense around us (for example a chair) is just a mere shadow of the perfect version which exists in the world of Forms. The perfect version of a chair is one in which for fills its purpose e.g. to be comfortable and to be sat on. Plato believed that everything had a perfect Form, from objects such as pens and books to things such as beauty and justice. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be traced backwards to every single item that is in the real world creating an infinite regression, and therefore we have to ask ourselves, how big is the world of Forms? Another reason why is it true to say that Forms teach us nothing about the real world is the queries of the Form of evil. If the Forms are perfect versions and what we have in the world of our senses are just mere shadows, how much worse can the evil get? And do we therefore really want to thrive to become the perfect philosopher if it means experiencing that? For example, if Hitler caused so much pain and suffering to so many people during the Holocaust, do we really want to go through that but of a worse/bigger scale in the world of Forms? And also in what form are is the evil in? In the form of famine and disease, murder and genesis or something much worse. Aristotle, another famous philosopher, argued against Plato s well known theory of Forms and stated that what we seen and experience is material whilst universals are only abstract projections of this. This completely contradicts Plato s theory and so do many other philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas. However, whilst it is possible that one of these theories are right there is no evidence to support it which is another one of the theories floors. Another common criticism of Plato s theory is that although the Form of good has had an influence of Christian teachings and theology, it is extremely difficult to see how ... Sick building syndrome is basically declared when a number of workers become sick in a specific part of a building, and their symptoms can be related directly back to air pollutants. These air pollutants are broken up into different categories, but the sources can be anything such as things outside the building; (vehicle exhaust emissions, biomass by products, etc.) which can enter the building through windows or poorly placed air vents. Or even things inside the building such as adhesives, carpeting, copy machines, pesticides, etc. That are known as volatile organic compounds or VOCs that can have a huge effect not only on humans, but plants as well. The five methods of testing a disaster recovery plan are providing a walk through, setting up simulations, having checklists, parallel testing, and making a full interruption test. The walk through helps test the plan by finding things more important or irrelevant that can be added or omitted from the plan. Simulations provide practice sessions of what a disaster would or could do to a business. Simulations also show the plan when it is put into effect. Checklists provide a list that each department uses to check off tasks completed. Parallel testing is a clone system that runs with the main system until the main system is ready to come back online. Full interruption will stop the production systems fully and start them back up to see the programs work or fail. Why does a DRP require testing? A disaster recovery plan requires testing so that all things are planned ahead of time and ready to go in the case of an emergency. New items or untrained personnel can come into the business and need to be added to the plan. This will need to be tested also to ensure it is covered when an emergency happens. In addition, everything on the plan may look good when in writing but until the plan is used in a real situation, the business will never know if it works properly. Testing the plan in a simulation disaster scenario is the best way to know how objects and people react to the situation. Conclusion In this assignment I have went over all of the key

  • 12. Communication Is A Form Of Symmetrical Communication Communication can come in various forms. A person can write, speak, or even use American Sign Language to communicate. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to receive feedback. To name a couple, two way asymmetrical and two way symmetrical communication are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical Communication happens when professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their opinions about certain things. However, this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use research to help them persuade their publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a form of balance to it and can lead publics to change their attitudes on their own. I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non professional) is able to publish their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting. Usually blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but no one has read. However, well known bloggers or blog sites, like Perez Hilton, TMZ, Mashable, and my personal favorite, The Shade room are all somewhat reliable sources. Many of these are digital media. These are people and/or their sites that receive a ton of feedback from their blog posts. The Shade Room in particular usually posts updates and breaking news on celebrities, ... These two women are supposedly best friends, yet their constant bickering and competition, which their children deem as normal , seems to negate this fact. June, Suyuan s daughter, seems to know the truth: Auntie Lin and my mother were both best friends and arch enemies who spent a lifetime comparing their children (Tan 27). Waverly also agrees with June s observation of their mothers friendship, simply stated as such: They were very close, which meant they were ceaselessly tormenting each other with boasts and secrets (Tan 194). Lindo and Suyuan spent most of their time comparing their cooking and their children, both believing that they were superior to the other. • 24. Kant s Moral Judgement Of Moral Luck Michaela Brester Elwonger Intro to Philosophy 9 October 2015 Kant believed that good or bad luck should influence neither our moral judgment of a person and his actions, nor his moral assessment of himself. Thomas Nagel Thomas Nagel, Professor of Philosophy at New York University developed the current philosophical idea of Moral luck. Kant denied the possibility of moral luck but Nagel created the idea of moral luck based on Kant s opposition. As quoted above, Kant thought that luck should not be the basis of judgement. He would have said that actions would be criticized if they turned out bad. However, by luck it can turn out well. Kant s view appears incorrect but it answers the problem about moral responsibility to which we possess no satisfactory solution . (Nagel 440) The problem of moral luck is unsettling to the philosophical world. Throughout this reflection, the concepts of moral luck, the plausible responses to the problem and the objections to the problem will be discussed. The principle of moral luck is substantial yet debatable, therefore, there are many responses, of which I believe incoherence to be the most plausible one. First, we discuss will. Nagel thinks that we make judgments on people when they have no control over their situation or the factors affecting them. When we do accuse someone of something, we are judging them. Even if someone is in a bad situation, Nagel wants us to recognize that it does not mean their existence is bad . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discovering Water Hardness Lab Report Discovering Water Hardness Lab Report Brittany Basinger Thursday March 26, 2015 Chemistry 111 Group Members: Katherine Heininger Andrew Beckett Drew Bednarski TA: Joe Fortenbaugh Introduction Water is essential for all living things to survive. Without water, life would be impossible. Seventy percent of the world is covered by water but only 2.5 percent is fresh water. (1) Not only is freshwater used for domestic and personal purposes, it is also used for irrigation, thermoelectric, industrial and agriculture. (2) Although freshwater seems to be untarnished, it regularly contains a variety of solutes ranging from gas in the environment to inorganic salts and minerals of rocks. Due to the ions dissolved, the water has a possibility to be hard or soft. Water hardness is defined as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. (2) In order to have hard water, calcium (Ca^(2+)) and magnesium (Mg^(2+)) need to have a high concentration of both ions dissolved into the water. Depending on the amount of dissolved minerals, water hardness has the possibility of being detected without actually experimentally testing for it. Have you ever felt like you still had residue on your hands after washing with soap? This is the effect of the calcium ions reacting with the soap. These effects have no effects for humans when drinking this water but industries worry about their water s hardness for one main reason. Studying water hardness is important because ... Is Northanger Abbey most accurately described as parody of the Gothic genre, or is there a more complicated relationship going on? Gothic novels purport to revive old stories and beliefs, exploring personal, psychical encounters with the taboo (Williams, 2000). The first is the character of the General as gothic villain, patriarch and usurper and the Abbey as his gothic residence; the second is the exploration of the dead mother s bedroom; and the final incident involves Catherine s expulsion from the Abbey. Both the latter incidents end in very ordinary, anti climactic ways, in contrast to gothic stories. The narrator also contrasts other ordinary incidents, with how they might have developed in a gothic novel; for example, Catherine s journey to Bath is accomplished with suitable quietness and uneventful safety. Neither robbers nor tempests befriend them, nor one lucky overturn to introduce them to the hero (Austen, 1933, p19). HLE is defined by the frequency of storybook reading and literacy teaching during book reading (Sawyer, et al., 2014, p. 65). Sénéchal LeFevre (2002 2014) conducted a study to prove that a positive and helpful HLE aids in children s emergent literacy. The Home Literacy Model used proved the original hypothesis. There was a statistically significant predictor of parent s creating a positive HLE and frequency of shared book reading that positively correlated to the child s literacy abilities for the beginning of grade 1. Shared book reading comprises 4% of the significant differences with the child s vocabulary. The formal literacy measures presented by the parents like, actively listening to the child read and the method the parent uses to teach, was deemed most helpful as a predictor for the child s reading abilities by the end of grade 1. The study concluded that a positive HLE promoted growth within the child s vocabulary and word reading skills (Sénéchal LeFevre, 2002; Senechal LaFevre, 2014). They try to understand assumptions and figure out what could be the consequences of actions before they get to them. Their main concern is how decisions will affect the bottom line. Thinkers like debates because they believe it brings issues to the table and the group can talk them out and come to conclusions. They expect other people s arguments to build to a conclusion and not just be a ramble. • 43. Stolen Art History The biggest art robbery in history was the theft where a total of 15 art works were stolen. Totaled up the works were valued at $500million. The government had several attempts at trying to find the art works and its values. A reward was set at $5 million dollars despite the art valuing way more than that lump sum of cash. In 1997 inspector Clouseau received paint chips in which the supposed art snatchers claimed to be from the stolen art work. In 2003 the chips were examined and had a fairly rare paint coating called red lake which was used in one of the stolen art works called Vermeer which when translated to English the concert . • 44. Granpa Chook In Bryce Courtenay s The Power Of One In Bryce Courtenay s The Power of One, The killing of Granpa Chook was a traumatic moment for Peekay. His only friend at school symbolized companionship and comfort, and Peekay cared deeply for him. It was amongst the low points of his horrifying boarding school experience, and the events surrounding the chicken s death displayed the cruelty of the world to Peekay. Most importantly, however, it revealed the extreme loyalty and bravery of the future welterweight champion. Granpa Chook may have been a mere chicken to the uninitiated, but was important to Peekay. Granpa Chook seemed to be the only friendly face to him, even if it was poultry. This was desperately needed for the young Rooinek, who endured the Judge and his council of war, [who] ... The leader of this particular branch of the Nazi party was far from pleased, and ordered his Stormtroopers to execute their prisoner for such an egregious offence. Before the makeshift firing squad shot Granpa Chook, Peekay was seized by panic. Kill me! [he] begged Please kill me. But don t kill Granpa Chook! (Page 49) and was hit in the stomach by a shot from the Judge in response. After a salvo of slingshot fire, Granpa Chook, the best damn chicken in the world, was dead (Page 49.) Peekay s appreciation and high regard for his friend are demonstrated by the epithet given. It surely was gutting for Peekay to see his best friend killed right next to him, and for the first time, he realized the ultimate level of cruelty: murder of a defenseless individual. Moreover, his willingness to sacrifice himself for others appears first here but is not a one time occurrence. It was a recurring reminder of his bravery and loyalty. Within a couple of years, his bravery is exhibited again. His friend Professor von Vollentseen is disobeying orders of British Soldiers who have come to arrest him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Old Dudley Character Analysis There are only a few paragraphs between the previous example and the next flashback. This time, readers are introduced to Old Dudley s closest friend from the south, Rabie. Yet, this friendship with a black man is one Old Dudley controlled. We see this automatically when Old Dudley remembers fishing with his friend. Page five states, He and Rabie would start out early Wednesday morning and fish all day. Rabie would find the spots and row; Old Dudley always caught them...And he would giggle and shift the boat downstream. That was Rabie. He could steal cleaner than a weasel but he knew where the fish were. Old Dudley always gave him the little ones (O Connor). While this first line of the two fishing all day has a nostalgic, sentimental feel and image, the next line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Old Dudley gets to do the fun part catch the fish while Rabie giggles and steers the boat downstream to another spot. This image is clear: Old Dudley has taken on the role of the master. Rabie submits. The last image we are left with is Old Dudley giving Rabie some of the fish he had helped him catch. However, they were the little ones. O Connor could have left this detail out, saying Old Dudley gave Rabie some of the fish. But the image of the smaller fish is essential to Old Dudley s character. He was able to choose which fish to give Rabie. Choice often means privilege and control. Old Dudley had both of these and in seeing these Wednesday fishing trips as clearly as we do, we understand why Old Dudley has so much animosity toward his current living and social situation. He does not have any friends in the New York City apartment. He has no one to control. The choices presented to him are different: Will he accept the fact that all men are created equal and accept, in his heart, that a black man can live in the same apartment as him and have as much control over his life as Old Dudley does his ... • 46. American History X Essay examples American History X American History X is clearly a film dealing with the social topic of racism. The interesting thing about this film is the way in which the subject is presented. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dummying down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken, charismatic and bright, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows that it is not only the white, neo nazi racists who are fools for being involved in this, but all those who hold hatred in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the young, black men were disgraced by the white male in a local game of basketball; therefore, the black men go to do damage to the white males car, which in turn, leads to the white male killing the young black men. It s a vicious circle with no end in sight. The film also did a very good job in the way they tie racial issues in with the portrayal of Derek s character as a strong and bold leader. The things that make Derek such a powerful and frightening character is not the fact that he is racist, it is the fact that instead of choosing a somewhat regular, backwoods, unintelligent racist as the films central character, Derek is well spoken and bright. It is these qualities that allow him to recruit the youths of Venice Beach and form, with the help of his mentor Cameron Alexander, the entire white supremacist culture permeating the area. Instead of just telling them to hate black, Hispanic, and Asian people because they are of that race, he makes speeches, telling them charismatically and passionately how these people are stealing their jobs, causing Americans to suffer a poor standard of living. He tells them America needs to take care of Americans before dealing with immigrants. And his speeches clearly incite this hatred in the young people of that area and flare up their tempers, causing behavior, such as we see in the movie when they destroy a grocery store because it was bought by a Korean immigrant who employs, 40 fuckin border jumpers ... • 47. Reflection Paper On Cheers It was March 2017, and the tryout cheers had just been put on Moodle. I had already been practicing my tumbling skills at Corner House for about five months, but I still wasn t confident with my skills. We had cheer camp for the next week to go over the cheers and how the tryout process was going to go. During the week I had gotten pretty good at the cheers but I lost my running tumbling from being so nervous. This made me so scared for tryouts and I thought for sure I wasn t going to make the team, especially compared to other girls who had outstanding tumbling skills. I knew that now I couldn t rely on my tumbling to get me on the team so I focused on my jumps and cheers. It was the night before tryouts and I couldn t sleep because of my nerves. Later that night at around 3:00 AM, I threw up from thinking about it so much. I stayed up the rest of the night practicing my cheers as quietly as I could without waking my sister or my parents up. When it was finally time to go to the tryouts I was getting ready and now I was worried I was going to be late even though I had plenty of time. While I was putting my hair up in a ponytail, I wasn t able to get it up without hair sticking out on the sides. Once I realized I was just going to have to deal with it, I started putting my bow in. I was rushing because I lost a lot of time with all the times of trying to get my ponytail perfect. I was twisting my bow around for the third time to get a tight fit and the rubber band ... • 48. Culture And Culture In Maggie Walker s Everyday Use Many times in life, it is required to make important decisions in tough situations, while other times decisions are made quickly and easily. What is it that causes us to operate in a specific way or talk a certain way in various situations? Although culture is often seen as the only factor of how we behave and think, culture has just a moderate affect a person s mentality on the various situations in life. Parts of a person s culture play a slight role in someone s ideas and actions. In the story, Everyday Use , a mother and daughter are in a conflict over who will keep an old quilt, But they re priceless! Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they d be in rags (Walker 82). This excerpt provides the reader with an example of both the power and the weakness of someone s cultural background. On the strong end of culture, there is Maggie. Maggie is just like her mother and the rest of her family in the sense that she is a home town and family oriented girl. However, her sister, Dee, was raised in the same cultural environment, but has vastly different ideas and cultural perception. The cause of this differentiation is due to factors outside of one s cultural background. Personality is a major reason for the difference between the sisters, as both sisters have the same cultural roots, but are complete opposites. The personality of a person greatly affects mentality and behavior. Although culture can setup the foundation of views on life, it is personality that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. The Philosophy Of Mind And The Body Philosophy of mind had come across when philosophers had an idea of the concepts regarding the human mind and its mysteries. This branch of psychology had intended to elaborate and study the nature and aspects of the human mind, also how these concepts such as mental events, mental functions and consciousness would connect to each other, through the human brain and body. Philosophy of mind became one of the central areas of philosophy as the skills and abilities of metalizing are used to treat individuals as the bearers of unobservable psychological states and processes, and in order to anticipate and explain the individual s behavior in terms of states. Dualism, a philosophy most defended by Rene Descartes, Believed that there are two concepts to philosophy, regarding the mind and the body. Dualism, is possibly the oldest and the most intuitive of the philosophies of mind, however within the modern psychology, this philosophy is a minority view among psychologists. This theory states that the mental cannot exist outside of the body, and the body is unable to think. It refers to reality as two distinct kind of things Mental and material things. Dualists often believe in different concepts regarding how these would relate to each other. Dualists fall into a variety of camps depending on how they would believe the mind and the body is related. Interactionists see that the mental events have effects or can cause the physical effects. • 50. The Dangers Of Repressing The Id In Judith Guest s... The Dangers of Repressing the Id: An ACT Analysis of Judith Guest s Novel Ordinary People Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. This quote by Sigmund Freud demonstrates the dangers of repressing or bottling up feelings and emotions. His notion of repression is a commonly discussed topic in psychology, as its dangers can be undermined. Though some people are fully capable of living with such repression, not having an outlet when facing difficult emotions can lead to severe mental breakdowns ranging from sorrow to depression. The novel Ordinary People by Judith Guest delves into repression by suggesting, from a Psychoanalytic perspective, that constant repression of the Id psychic zone leads to the formation of multiple layers of dangerous defense mechanisms which can only be controlled by active reversal during regression. Guest s intended psychoanalytic theme can thus be approached by analyzing it in three separate segments, Conrad s repression of his Id, Conrad s defense mechanisms and Conrad s regression. Firstly, Conrad s Id has been nearly entirely repressed by his unconscious, leading him to lack the typical emotions that a teenager of his age should be feeling. The Id is one of the psychic zones proposed by Freud and it can be defined as humans unconscious source of instant gratification and animalistic emotions. It is generally kept in harmony with other psychic zones in order to prevent it from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold Many events in an individual s life can cause them to experience grief such as, losing a loved one, a tragic event, or even a breakup. Being in denial is hard. When someone is in denial, they do not exactly know what to think of the situation and they do not want to believe it. A person in denial will act differently than someone who is not. They may not speak much, zone out often, and will not make themselves presentable when going out into public. Alice Sebold wrote The Lovely Bones, which was a book about a 14 year old girl, Susie, who was murdered on her way home from school by her neighbor. Her entire family experienced grief from the tragic death. Susie watched down on her family from heaven, and saw her mom abandoned her family and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abigail was self centered for making the decision she made. This moment demonstrates family dynamic because even though they were once happy, Abigail s decision to leave has changed everything. She does not want to deal with anyone but herself. Abigail compares to someone in modern day in denial because people today still shut everyone else in their life out when they are going through denial. Lindsey handled denial better than the rest of her family members. She was old enough to handle it the way she wanted to. It did not really hit Lindsey that her sister, Susie, was really gone until she went into Susie s room for the first time since her death and realized that all of Susie s clothes were now hers. Gosh , she said, whispering into the darkness of my closet. She realized with guilt and glee that everything she saw before her was hers now (Sebold 106). This shows that Lindsey is in denial because that is when she realizes that Susie will never be coming back to wear any of her clothes again. Lindsey is strong when around her family, but when she is alone, that is when her true feelings begin to hit her. This contributes to isolation because she isolates her feelings from her family and only lets them show when she is alone. The only time Lindsey actually expressed some form of emotion was when she was speaking to her principal, Mr. Caden, about playing soccer. Lindsey said, I d say it would be pretty hard to play soccer on the soccer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
