Questions On The Origins Of Philosophy
Eren Halliburton 12/1/2016 Problems of Philosophy Research Paper Dr. Hutcherson
The origins of philosophy began with the dynamic question of What if? followed by intellectual
reasoning for the ways of the world. To look past the general purpose of life and the things that come
with it; is when a new philosophy is discovered. The first recorded philosopher came about early on in
the sixth century B.C.E. His name was Thales of Miletus or what is now Turkey. The first three
philosophers, Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, are known as the Milesians because they all
came from the Greek colony of Miletus on the Persian coast and because they constitute the first
school of philosophy. (Pg. 24) However, little is known about Thales due to the fact, there weren t any
pieces of literature connecting to him. However, he did make it known that everything is
fundamentally made up of water. This belief went against the theological perspectives of Greek
mythology, introducing a more scientific view of the cosmos. Thales made it known that he wanted to
find the Arche or unifying principle that linked every aspect of life together. According to Thales,
water is the one and only Arche.
Two of Thales successors and fellow Milesians, Anaximander and Anaximenes based their beliefs off
of Thales philosophy. However, they didn t seem to agree with Thales ideology of everything being
broken down to water. Anaximander completely dismissed the idea of the four primary elements,

Arrested Development
This article develops and explores the relationship between television and VOD (Video on Demand),
specifically Netflix, and the shift to its in house production and distribution of shows. The article also
discusses the different periods of television, and whether we have landed in a new period the era of
TVIV. The show Arrested Development is analyzed, because it is a show that transitioned from
network television to a Netflix produced and distributed show. The analyzation of the show then leads
to a discussion of post postmodernism and binge watching. Netflix does signal a change within the
digital television landscape. Netflix is a first mover in the online streaming business and moves away
from traditional aspects of television. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
TVI is the era of channel scarcity, the mass audience, and the three network hegemony (Pearson
[Jenner, 2]). TVII is the era of channel/network expansion, quality television, and network branding
strategies (Pearson [Jenner, 2]). TVIII is the era of proliferating digital distribution platforms, further
audience fragmentation, and...a shift from second order to first order commodity relations (Pearson
[Jenner, 2]). While these distinctions are made, they are not necessarily set in stone. Hence the
introduction of TVIV. Netflix draws into question the previous notions of multi platform as television,
due to its independence from more traditional modes... (Jenner, 3). Michael Curtin argues that there is
an alternative means of understanding the current television trend, that of matrix media. The matrix
era is characterized by interactive exchanges, multiple sites of productivity and diverse modes of
interpretation and use (Curtin [Jenner, 4]). The entrance of Netflix as both a television producing and
streaming system has led to the argument for TVIV, which can be understood as an era of matrix
media where viewing patterns, branding strategies, industrial structures, the way different media forms
interact with each other or the various ways content is made available shift completely away from the
television set (Jenner, 4). Netflix does fit into TVIII s guidelines in many ways, but its format is

The Woman Who Changed the Style of the World Essay
The term The Little Black Dress, the fragrance Chanel No. 5, the Chanel suit with its soft, cardigan
like jacket and skirt, have become part of the timeless fashion vocabulary familiar to us all. From our
perspective, these aspects of modern fashion hardly seem revolutionary, but Coco Chanel was a
businesswoman who became successful by adopting fashion to the evolving role of women in a
rapidly changing wartime society; her vision that left a legacy which endures to this day. To
understand the role of Coco Chanel as a fashion revolutionary, it is important to understand the era
that she lived in and how the world of fashion differed from the one we know today. In first span of
the 1900s, stylish women desired dresses for just about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The way regular people buy clothes today, choosing designs that are manufactured by the millions in
multiple sizes and shipped too many stores is called buying off the rack, and means that virtually any
shopper in any location has access to up to date fashion trends created by famous designers. In the
twenties; however cities like Paris and New York were the homes of the fashion houses where the
most talented designers did their work, and wealthy customers travelled to these cities to view
seasonal collections and have their clothing custom made (American History Book). Women of the
twenties invested in lavish clothes from the most prestigious dressmakers they could afford show off
their shapely figures but were not permitted by the customs of the time to expose their skin. World
War I soon broke out and changed women s fashion forever. The war empowered women and affected
fashion in many ways. Women began working at jobs such as nursing, manufacturing, offices, mining,
serving in canteens that required them to wear simpler clothing.

Juxtaposition In Shakespeare
In much of literature there exists the juxtaposition of the natural world vs. the unnatural. Human s
effect on nature and how it, in turn, influences us, is a crucial theme in many classic works. In
Shakespeare s play As You Like It, the initial setting is in the court, however, the characters are soon
introduced to the Forest of Ardenne where the magic and the differences of the natural world are clear.
Shakespeare uses this juxtaposition of settings to contrast the values of each environment and create
resolution for all characters at the end of the play. In the second scene of AYLI, it is established that
Duke Senior, Rosalind s father, has been banished to the Forest of Ardenne by his brother, Duke
Frederick. Although banished usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the court, there is Duke Senior, Duke Frederick, Rosalind, Touchstone, Celia, Orlando and
Oliver, characters that are often described as pretty or able to speak well. This highlights their more
dignified, educated backgrounds. Many of them are witty and engage in clever banter throughout the
play that gives them a more sophisticated quality. Then there are the country characters: Silvius,
Corin, Phebe, William, and Audrey. These characters are obviously less educated, having spent their
entire lives in the forest, farming. Their lack of intelligence in the court sense, is shown through the
incompatibility of dialogue between city and country characters. For example, Audrey and Touchstone
often have issue while talking because Audrey does not know the definition of certain words such as
foul and poetical. When she attempts to use these words, incorrectly so, her country idiocy is
amplified. The discrepancy between country and court characters is also demonstrated in Touchstone s
encounter with William, Audrey s former lover who describes himself as witty. Touchstone arrogantly
brushes this notion aside, asserting that only fools call themselves witty. This scene portrays William
as a kind of country bumpkin and establishes the idea that while the country may seem like a good
solution for city woes, it should not necessarily be considered a permanent solution, because the
benefits of court life, in this case education, are

The Heavy Burden Pertaining To Racism Summary
487 The Heavy Burden Pertaining to Racism The concept and debate regarding racial equality within
this society varies cross culturally. There is indeed a heavy burden and a discrepancy with regards to
racism, stemming from a lack of education, towards a lack of opportunities, which leads to oppression.
While Tricia Rose explores how the educational system is under representative when it comes to
minorities and the oppressed, Beyoncé took a bold political statement while juxtaposing her views
towards the radical Black Panther movement.
First, Tricia Rose explores the onset of educational equality within this unequal system. She sheds
light on the misconception that wealthy individuals are worthy and have received their knowledge as
well as money in a just way. Conversely, the poor, unprivileged individuals have not obtained just
rewards, where the educational system has created an unnecessary burden for students. This can be
exemplified by the fact that students obtaining an education already have their future carved out. For
instance, while a white affluent individual will have more opportunities pertaining to attaining a better
education and higher grades, a poor African American will not have the same ... Show more content

While Tricia Rose s speech on educational equality is quite realistic, Beyoncé created an ineffective
radical approach to spark violence. The educational system, particularly public schools should
increase their standards in order to provide seamless and equal opportunities to individuals of all races
and demographics. Notwithstanding, powerful individuals such as Beyoncé should not take advantage
of sports events in order to attract 100 million viewers with wrongful exposure, creating unnecessary
politically charged ideas. Our society is pervasive with inequality, and it is up to the system, rather
than rappers, to ameliorate education, which will lead to equality rather than

College Retirement Benefits
As college quickly approaches, the financial decisions I constitute today will affect me for the rest of
my life. As a young adult with minimal financial experience, one uneducated decision could establish
a precedence of financial insecurity for the majority of my young life. Consequently, planning a
budget and savings plan will immensely benefit my future spending and saving habits. Another
decision is how to independently manage my personal income and my spouse s student loans. Lastly,
contemplating the later years of my life propagates the necessity of a retirement plan and investing.
Ten years from now, I will sustain a stable career as a physical education teacher and an assistant
college softball coach earning approximately $50,000 a year. I will have graduated from college
approximately six years prior and plan to have my college debt paid off. I m constructing the
presumption that I will be in a stable relationship, living with my significant other, and contemplating
marriage. After my spouse and I have been married for two years, I plan to assist them with their ...

My Favorite Memories
Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood were born and raised in a military housing
neighborhood located off the base in Warminster, Pennsylvania. My favorite memory however, was
the time my brother and I met one of our childhood best friends. I still remember it as if it happened
yesterday, no matter how much dust it collects in the back of my head, I can always blow it off and
replay it in my mind as if it was the first time seeing it through my eyes. One humid summer day my
older brother and I were outside in the backyard. I want to say I was 6 and my brother was 8, but we
were probably younger. The small fenced in space was just on the edge of the forest which allowed the
ground to be covered in dead pine needles that the trees would cast to the wind. We were bored as
ever, discontent with the neglected pair of swings and lonely slide that had been untouched for most of
the summer. They called to us, but our boredom, unable to be satisfied by such a simple fix, declined
their invitation. We sat in a pair of lawn chairs that were set up against the white fence dividing our
yard from the neighbors . That s when I heard the sound of springs on a trampoline only a few
backyards down. It was a girl. The first thing I thought: cooties. She looked to be my brother s age,
and she was. With that being said, we decided to mess with this poor girl by calling out to her, only to
quickly duck down behind the safety of our fence. We were hooligans. This was probably not

The Link Between Drama Based Reading Instruction And...
Introduction
Rao and Cartledge (2009) reported that minority and economically disadvantaged children have
difficulty in reading comprehension. Reading comprehension involves reading, decoding, making
connections to prior knowledge and thinking deeply about the text (Reading Rockets, 2015). Reading
comprehension is a skill that is used inside and outside of the classroom, which means it should be
effectively taught. Since this is an important skill that many children struggle with, I would like to
focus on assisting children with enhancing their reading comprehension skills. I would like to create a
program that focuses on building reading comprehension skills through the implementation of drama
techniques.
Research
Adomat (2012) conducted research on the connection between drama based reading instruction and
reading comprehension. Adomat (2012) provided small group reading instruction that utilized drama
techniques such as hotseating, role playing and tableaux. Hotseating involves a student or students
assuming the role of a character, and respond to questions by their classmates. This allows students to
analyze characters, infer, elaborate and think quickly on their feet. When students role play they are in
pairs and take turns playing different characters. Lastly, in tableaux after reading a book as a whole
group the students had to determine the most important parts and create visuals with their body. At the
end of the year, the students took a reading assessment,

The Beatific Vision In St. Paul s Analysis
Presocratic philosophers in their search for the truth caught glimpses of divinity and of eternal life.
This search culminates in Socrates, who through his lifelong search for truth gains an image of the
soul and eternal life similar to the Catholic concept of eternal life. In the Phaedrus, Socrates says that
when all divine souls go to feast at the banquet (Phaedrus 247b), they ascend to a place beyond heaven
to gaze upon a supreme divine being. Similarly, In his letter to the Hebrews, St. Paul speaks about the
mass a copy of the heavenly sanctuary the beatific vision. Socrates, through natural revelation,
grasped at an image of the divine and the beatific vision which is only fully revealed through divine
revelation. Every artist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He saw the things of divinity, beauty, wisdom, and goodness, as nourishment of the soul and a guide
towards the beatific vision. Likewise, the New Testament shows the beauty, wisdom and goodness in
the mass as a mirror of eternal life. Combined, the natural philosophy and divine revelation paint a
pure picture of eternal life. Plato could get to an imperfect description of the divine which Christianity
is certain of through the mass and divine revelation. The mass, because it was given by divine
revelation and is linked with the beatific vision is a more perfect view of it. Since the mass is a
shadow of the beatific vision. Then what can be said about cavalry, which is the fullness of mass. How

The Memory Of The Brain
The hippocampus refers to the segment of the brain, which is involved in the formation, organization,
and storage of memory. It is a structure in the limbic system, which is significant in the formation of
new memories and the connection of senses and emotions to memories. Such senses include smell and
sound. The structure assumes the shape of a horseshoe paired structure. As such, one hippocampus is
located on either side of the brain; the right and the left hemisphere. Structurally, the hippocampus
performs the function of memory indexer. It sends memories out to the proper portions of the cerebral
hemisphere for purposes of long term storage (Wills 375). It then retrieves this information upon
demand. Directionally, the hippocampus location is inside the temporal lobes, which lie close to the
amygdala. The long term memory, which forms the main duty of the hippocampus, is symbolic of an
amalgamation of data in the conscious memory of human beings. It also forms the memory collected
from experiences and knowledge.
The hippocampus plays a crucial role in storing all the forms of data. Nonetheless, scientists have tried
to explain how the hippocampus aids in memory storage, which has yielded inconclusive results. As
such, there have been many experiments that have been put forth by many scientists to explain the
function of the hippocampus. The management of short term memory is not a function of the
hippocampus. Together with procedural memory, they are regulated by the

Gay Marriage in the United States
The debate between whether gay marriage should be legalized or not has been a controversial topic
recently. In the past twelve years, equal marriage rights have been legalized in 6 states of the U.S..
Eighteen states do not allow gay marriage and do not recognize civil unions. The other twenty six
states allow civil unions, and some are debating legalizing gay marriage. Gay marriage should be legal
across the United States.
Not allowing gay marriage in any state is unconstitutional. If one state is to allow gay marriage, then
the people that get married in that state are supposed to be legally married in all other states of the

I, for one, would love to be there when the proponent of such an argument is to explain to his post
menopausal mother or impotent father that since they cannot procreate, they must now surrender their
wedding rings! That would be fun to watch! Again, such an argument fails to persuade based on the
marriages society does allow routinely, without even a second thought. Same sex couples aren t the
optimum environment in which to raise children. That s an interesting one, in light of who society
does allow to get married and bring children into their marriage. Check it out: murderers, convicted
felons of all sorts, even known child molesters are all allowed to freely marry and procreate, and do so
every day, with hardly a second thought by these same critics. So if children are truly the priority here,
why is this allowed? Why are the advocates of this argument not working to prohibit the above
categories of people from raising children? The fact is that many gay couples raise children, adopted
and occasionally their own from failed attempts at heterosexual marriages. Lots and lots of scientific
studies have shown that the outcomes of the children raised in the homes of gay and lesbian couples
are just as good as those of straight couples. The differences have been shown again and again to be
insignificant. Psychologists tell us that what makes the difference is the

human beings possess either one or any of these characteristics, which make them unique. It is safe to

He summed up human nature as existence precedes essence . In his book, Existentialism and Human
Emotions, he explained what he meant by this. It means that, first of all, man exists, turns up, appears
on the scene, and, only afterwards, defines himself. If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is
indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will be something, and he himself will
have made what he will be 4 . After watching 12 Angry Men, the prominent view on human nature
that is best portrayed in the movie is that people are free to be whatever they want because as Sartre

Antigone And A Raisin In The Sun
Sophocles Antigone and Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun are both classic works of literature
and drama. Set in Ancient Greece and Chicago s South Side during the 1950s, respectively, they both

plays explore the concept of money and the influence it holds over people. In A Raisin in the Sun,
Mama receives a ten thousand dollar insurance check at the beginning of the story, and the characters

After the crisis of government regulation capitalism about six years from 1973 to1979, a new layout
liberal capitalism started to appear; firstly it was in Britain and the United States. In America, the new

allowing the free market rule, and realizing capital to flow freely.

incomes, produced a large and growing number of money to invest, these funds want to transcend the

Sociological Attitudes Toward Gender And Sexuality
When analysing the current state of sociological attitudes toward gender and sexuality, the
overwhelming conclusion is that the hegemonic view in society assumes an inherent binary (Lorber
via Steele, 2005, p.75). We categorize people into two groups: male or female; man or woman;
masculine or feminine; gay or straight. However, throughout humanity s development, variances to
that model have emerged, either choosing to sit somewhere between the binary, or reject the model
altogether. These variations challenge the binary assumptions entrenched within society, and as a
result, are often denied, misunderstood or ignored entirely.
Enter bisexuality. Put simply, the concept of bisexuality is a sexual orientation that lies in the space
between heterosexuality and homosexuality. However, society s assumption of sexual essentialism, the
idea that sexual orientation is fixed and absolute, has led to a culture that is uncomfortable with people
who are sexually ambiguous (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 87). This urges society to assume that,
despite the existence of bisexuality, people are really either gay or straight (Valverde via Naugler,
2012, p. 83). This is the phenomenon of bisexual erasure (Eisner, 2013, p. 89). Bisexual erasure
affects both bisexual men and women in various ways; however, this essay will focus on the erasure of
bisexuality in men in particular.
There is a distinctive public perception when it comes to bisexuality in men: that they don t exist at

St. Charmain Research Paper
St. Dominic of Castile St Dominic was born at the Kingdom of Castile in Calaruegua to Felix and
Joan Guzman in 1170. St. Dominic s mother had a dream before he was born, she said while she was
dreaming a dog leaped from her womb with a torch in its mouth and that it seemed to light the world
on fire. That s how his parents gave him the named Dominic meaning The Dog of the Lord . Joan told
her husband the next day and he was speechless at what he had heard. St. Dominic was very smart and
loved to learn about the Catholic Faith. St. Dominic would always try to offer small thing up to God.
His mother noticed that he would sleep on the floor at night. This went on for quite a while until she
finally asked him why? He said that he wanted to make a small offering up to Jesus every night. She
told Felix the next day and asked if they should send Dominic to his Uncle, who was the archpriest of
Gamiel d Izan, at the school of Palencia. When St Dominic reached the age of fourteen his parents

Second Trimester Medical Implication Of Abortion
One main reason that women decide to end a pregnancy is due to malformation of the fetus. Most
women think that the future child is going to be in pain so they decide to get abortion. But is
malformation a fair reason to not end a life? Or women don t want to face any challenges or struggle
they might face with their child in the future? According to Inga Maj Anderson, Kyllike Christensson,
Kristina Gemzell Danielsson authors of the article Experiences, Feelings and Thoughts of Women
Undergoing Second Trimester Medical Termination of Pregnancy imply that through a questionnaire
they gathered information on womens feelings and thoughts when they got an abortion. Despite of the
results of the questionnaire women do not regret their decision to terminate the pregnancy...their
rational thinking outweighs their emotionally difficult feelings ( Inga Maj Anderson 1). ... Show more

In this article it informs that forcing women to view the ultrasound image and fetal heartbeat has
become mandatory in some states in the USA as a strategy to prevent women from undergoing the
abortion (Inga Maj Anderson 2). I agree with this strategy because women that are looking for an
abortion can see that the fetus is not just a clot of blood it a person with a heart beat that deserves to
live no matter the condition they have. Women that proceed the termination of their pregnancy due to
malformation of the fetus usually their decisions are based on the results of an ultrasound or chorionic
villus sampling. Does the evidence prove conclusively that malformation will happen? I understand
that women are scared or aren t ready to face an unwanted pregnancy, but I still feel that it s wrong to
decide if someones lives or dies. It s like taking someones life

Asphalt Tango
In this odd short film, it seems that a mad artist, who was once affiliated with the Romanian Army, is
creating a collage of his darkest fantasies. It is more likely that these military men are apart of the
Romanian Army, because in one scene there is a tape recorder set on the artist s desk, and has the
words Asfalt Tango written. Asphalt Tango, is a type of Romanian music described as funky, upbeat,
and groovy. The artist is entertained and amused by this kind of music. So much so, that he expresses
his joy by dancing along with his haunting motion photographs of dead soldiers. The pictures
themselves are coming from another deranged individual who may be an artist himself. After the

The soldiers need to come out in a specific position when they fall down to their deaths, this probably
takes many tries. It certainly can be said that many men died to be apart of this sickening scheme.
These men were easily persuaded to be compliant by, the General, who honoured their bravery by
giving the soldiers the same pin that was attached simply with a cheap safety pin. The General himself
did not seem to care too much about murdering the soldiers. He had an egotistical look when he was
speaking to the next soldier. It can be assumed that, he enjoys the power he holds when he persuades
or talks the soldiers into falling to their deaths. During World War II, many very young boys were
drafted into the war. They almost instantly lost their sanities being surrounded by the horrifying
corpses of dead soldiers and the persecuted jewish people. These boys were too young to be thrown

Feminism In The Awakening
A Feminist Critique of The Awakening
How many years have I slept? she inquired. The whole island seems changed. A new race of beings
must have sprung up, leaving only you and me as past relics. (Chopin 67). The turn of the century was
on the horizon, coinciding with those who seek change, rising with the dawn of the new era. One
movement to emerge was that of feminism; the challenging of equity and social expectations for
women. Kate Chopin s revolutionary novel The Awakening serves as a catalyst for much of the 20th
century s critique on the place of women in society, particularly pertaining to expression, equality, and
Chopin s juxtaposition of men and women.

Ways to Prevent Genocide
GENOCIDE PREVENTION Genocide Prevention The term genocide was developed during the
Holocaust and announced an international crime during the 1948 United Nations Convention that
focused on Prevention and Punishment of genocide as a crime. Genocide is, therefore, defined as
deeds committed with the aim of destroying, in whole or partially, anethnical, national, religious or
racial group.Such acts include, killing followers of the group, causing serious physical or mental harm
to followers of the group, intentionallyimposing on the group conditions of living aimed at bringing
about its physical loss, imposing measures envisioned to prevent new births within the group, or
compulsorily transferring children of the society to a different group. The intent to destroy certain
groups is unique to the characterisation of genocide. Closely related categories of international law
crimes touching humanity aredescribed as adverse or calculated attacks against citizens. This timeline
marks the growth of the term genocide and its systematization into international law. Genocide is an
ancient old crime.Genocides in prehistory were often organised not just to eliminate enemy ethnicities,
but to integrate and exploit their representatives. It was children and women who were spared the
killings. They were seen as the group least able to retaliate, and as parents of offspring for the central
group.By contrast, males were often killed. The roots of gender cideagainst men and boys are

The Formation And Trajectory Of Communal Violence
Communal violence can be defined as a form of conflict between ethnic groups, where solidarity is
felt for one s own group and opposition towards other groups (Myers and Horowitz, 2002). The
formation and trajectory of communal violence holds a number of similarities with the way that
terrorists are trained. Both incorporate motivations for violence which are provoked by economic and
political events. Secondly, motives for violence are often ecsasperated by ideological goals which are
often based around distortions of reality. Psychological explanations for intra group hatred and
conflict can to explain how and why humans can act in this way.
In the training of terrorists, the motives behind the teachings are often driven by political and ... Show

Here, we have examples of how the drive for political and economic power presents itself as a defined
goal and a justification for executing violence towards a hated group.
It is in our human nature to assign stereotypes to particular ethnic groups and negative stereotypes
provide the foundations for such violence to occur. Hoffmann (1986) suggests stereotypes are
cognitive constructs created out of a kernel of truth and then distorted beyond reality . Such
stereotypes can act as the drivers for violence. Similarly, when terrorists are trained, they are taught
hatred towards opposing groups. The terrorist notebooks revealed that students received specific
lessons on who should die. For example, students learnt to oppose Uzbekistans rulers, who were
described as being betrayers of faith. Teachings about opposing groups appear to be based on
distortions of reality, as the writer claims that the teachers relatively uneducated. Thus, it appears in
both cases, a generalised view of the enemy often acts as a driver for violence, in addition to solidarity
being felt for one s own group.
Whilst negative stereotypes may provide the foundations for hatred towards an opposing group,
communal violence can often be driven by myths which promote utopian fantasies. This often arises
from ancient myths which are projected a current situation. For example, in

Voltmeter Construction
ABSTRACT
The objective of this project is to design LCD digital oscilloscope for practical use. The basic concept
for the project involves reading the voltage signal at the input and displaying it on the screen of an
alphanumeric LCD. The input analog signals are supplied to the ADC(Analog to Digital Converter),
which are then sampled by it and the amplitude of the signal(voltage) is displayed on the LCD.
Device Components:
Microcontroller or processor:
We used Atmega16 an Atmel AVR series microcontroller. The processor clock was set to 11MHz
internal oscillator.
Analog to Digital Converter:
In this device we use Atmega16 s inbuilt analog to digital converter. It is a 10 bit ADC which uses the

As the name implies it uses analogue techniques throughout to create the pattern on the display.
Typically they use a cathode ray tube where the voltages on the x and y plats cause a dot on the screen
to move. In the horizontal direction this is controlled by the time base, whereas in the vertical
direction the deflection is proportional to the signal input. Essentially the signal is amplified and
applied to the Y plates of the cathode ray tube.
A cathode ray tube consists of a number of elements. There is an electron gun that generates an
electron beam that is fired along the length of the tube. This beam passes by deflection plates that are
used to deflect the beam, as a result of electrostatic attraction and repulsion, and finally the beam hits
a phosphor coating on the screen creating a small dot of light.
To assist in making the trace as clear as possible, intensity and focus controls are included. The focus
ensures that the dot that scans the screen remains as sharp as possible and in this way it can deliver a
clear trace. The intensity control is required because the intensity of the dot or trace varies according
to the speed at which the scan is made. Controlling the intensity enables a clear trace to be obtained.
When the scan is very slow the dot is seen to traverse the screen and it is difficult to visualize the

Factors Of Postnatal Hyperoxia And Premature Aging
Postnatal Hyperoxia and Premature Aging
It is known that hyperoxic exposure through oxygen supplementation results in increased levels of
reactive oxygen species which can subsequently damage DNA (O Reilly, 2001). Telomere sequences
protect the end of DNA and these will decrease upon DNA replication thereby limiting the capacity of
cells to proliferate. Attrition of telomeres is a characteristic of aging and serves as a major marker of
premature aging regardless of phenotype (Lopez Otin, 2013). There are several studies that suggest
that shorter telomere lengths can be found in circulating leukocytes of young adults born preterm as
compared to term born controls and while this has not be implicated as a general association between

There are numerous lung disease states in which aberrant protein homeostasis is implicated, both in
pediatrics and adults. Within the lung, there is data suggesting that protein degradation pathways are
dysregulated by hyperoxia and mechanical ventilation through reactive oxygen species production
which can be especially challenging to an immature lung (Berkelhamer, 2013; Birukov, 2009). It is not
known whether protein degradation alterations have been implicated within the right heart as well.
It is unknown to whether mechanical ventilation and hyperoxia trigger autophagy or proteasome
dysfunction in infants. In adult mice however, autophagy within the lungs is increased with
mechanical ventilation (Lopez Alonso, 2013). Hyperoxia has also been shown to alter autophagy
through induction of autophagosome formation within bronchial epithelial cells (Tanaka, 2012).
The implication that protein degradation pathways are dysregulated by hyperoxia is especially
important given that not only is it implicated in aging within the lung, but that the mitochondrial
dysregulation not only seen at work within this body of literature, but also the right ventricles used in
this study would suggest that protein degradation could play a role in the right ventricular dysfunction
found after exposure to post natal hyperoxia (Goss, 2017).

Strategies And Methods For Designing A Meeting Essay
Meeting Strategies This paper will discuss strategies and methods for designing a meeting. For
purposes of this discussion, it is time for the quarterly board of directors meeting. Unfortunately, the
meeting will be discussing low profits, pending lawsuits and high employee turnover. To add to the
difficulty of delivering bad news, the board of directors are dispersed across the country that will
require time zone and location coordination. Barrett (2011) discusses meeting strategies and design.
She suggests the following ideas, which are define the meeting purpose, consider the audience, set an
agenda, consider the meeting setting (location, seating arrangements, etc.), the meeting time, ascertain
needed information, and establish tangible end product(s).
Meeting Purpose
As Barrett (2011) suggests, one of the most important first steps is to define the meeting purpose. The
meeting organizer must evaluate whether the meeting is held to inform, persuade, instruct, or engage.
In this scenario, the meetings purpose is a hybrid of informing the board and engaging them in
solutions and directions.
Consider the audience Next, Barrett (2011) suggests consideration of the audience. For this meeting,
the board of directors, who are the decision makers, is the audience. Included along with the board of
directors, key personnel such as the budget officer and legal team ought to be included. The meeting
setting and time in this scenario will vary due to the board of

inspirational environmental books ever created in the 20th century. It contains several of Leopold s
thoughts about his interactions with nature. Many of the main concepts and foundations of modern
conservation, ecology and land ethic can be found in this book.He explains what it means to be a

most convenient for them and that we can use everything. Everything is here for the purpose to make

The summary of Leopold s work is what should be admired, as Leopold was a pioneer in changing the
American view of the people s place in nature. One of my favorite quotes in the book was: the modern
dogma is comfort at any cost , which is saying that to get comfort, you have to spend money. Another
favorite quote was: is education possibly a process of trading awareness for things of lesser worth?
What I got out of this is that it s saying the true definition of education and what school is. Leopold s
views on the world are very good and they show how much we don t think about the world and the
land ethic. Also, it shows how all we care about is comfort and convenience. His view of being out
with nature is also good because our world is filled with technology and many people forget about
nature and how important it is to us. The through line that I think defines him is Earth Keeper, his
views of how technology and people hurt nature and how we need to protect it. Nature is such a big
part of our lives and we need to take care of the earth. A topic I was challenged by is the whole aspect
of is almost everything bad? Is all technology and photography bad? Photography, I feel,

the original text version there are two balls held. At the first ball, Cinderella realizes that the Prince
has an interest in her. When she comes home that night she wishes to attend the second ball. The
second ball is like the one Disney portrays. It is when Cinderella loses her slipper and the prince finds
it on the stairs. The first ball puts a twist on the story. Readers may be expecting it to be like the
movie. Therefore, they expect

The Ethics Case Contemplation, Dilemma At Devil s Den
The ethics case contemplation, Dilemma at Devil s Den, is an unblemished precedent of the
challenges that can appear at an establishment that question s the moral ethics of business. The Devil s
Den is a snack bar on a college campus, which employed approximately 36 students with 6 of them in
management positions. Evening and weekend positions were difficult to fill, and wages were low,
making employees valuable. Therefore, the managers were more flexible in their actions and
correction measures were not enforced. In order for this den to carry on in an ethical manner it

The daily activities happening at the Devil s Den are unethical, some of them being minor issues, but
in the case with ethics small things can become big things. The line is blurred as to where you draw

  • 2. Questions On The Origins Of Philosophy Eren Halliburton 12/1/2016 Problems of Philosophy Research Paper Dr. Hutcherson The origins of philosophy began with the dynamic question of What if? followed by intellectual reasoning for the ways of the world. To look past the general purpose of life and the things that come with it; is when a new philosophy is discovered. The first recorded philosopher came about early on in the sixth century B.C.E. His name was Thales of Miletus or what is now Turkey. The first three philosophers, Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, are known as the Milesians because they all came from the Greek colony of Miletus on the Persian coast and because they constitute the first school of philosophy. (Pg. 24) However, little is known about Thales due to the fact, there weren t any pieces of literature connecting to him. However, he did make it known that everything is fundamentally made up of water. This belief went against the theological perspectives of Greek mythology, introducing a more scientific view of the cosmos. Thales made it known that he wanted to find the Arche or unifying principle that linked every aspect of life together. According to Thales, water is the one and only Arche. Two of Thales successors and fellow Milesians, Anaximander and Anaximenes based their beliefs off of Thales philosophy. However, they didn t seem to agree with Thales ideology of everything being broken down to water. Anaximander completely dismissed the idea of the four primary elements, ... • 3. Arrested Development This article develops and explores the relationship between television and VOD (Video on Demand), specifically Netflix, and the shift to its in house production and distribution of shows. The article also discusses the different periods of television, and whether we have landed in a new period the era of TVIV. The show Arrested Development is analyzed, because it is a show that transitioned from network television to a Netflix produced and distributed show. The analyzation of the show then leads to a discussion of post postmodernism and binge watching. Netflix does signal a change within the digital television landscape. Netflix is a first mover in the online streaming business and moves away from traditional aspects of television. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... TVI is the era of channel scarcity, the mass audience, and the three network hegemony (Pearson [Jenner, 2]). TVII is the era of channel/network expansion, quality television, and network branding strategies (Pearson [Jenner, 2]). TVIII is the era of proliferating digital distribution platforms, further audience fragmentation, and...a shift from second order to first order commodity relations (Pearson [Jenner, 2]). While these distinctions are made, they are not necessarily set in stone. Hence the introduction of TVIV. Netflix draws into question the previous notions of multi platform as television, due to its independence from more traditional modes... (Jenner, 3). Michael Curtin argues that there is an alternative means of understanding the current television trend, that of matrix media. The matrix era is characterized by interactive exchanges, multiple sites of productivity and diverse modes of interpretation and use (Curtin [Jenner, 4]). The entrance of Netflix as both a television producing and streaming system has led to the argument for TVIV, which can be understood as an era of matrix media where viewing patterns, branding strategies, industrial structures, the way different media forms interact with each other or the various ways content is made available shift completely away from the television set (Jenner, 4). Netflix does fit into TVIII s guidelines in many ways, but its format is different from the existing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Woman Who Changed the Style of the World Essay The term The Little Black Dress, the fragrance Chanel No. 5, the Chanel suit with its soft, cardigan like jacket and skirt, have become part of the timeless fashion vocabulary familiar to us all. From our perspective, these aspects of modern fashion hardly seem revolutionary, but Coco Chanel was a businesswoman who became successful by adopting fashion to the evolving role of women in a rapidly changing wartime society; her vision that left a legacy which endures to this day. To understand the role of Coco Chanel as a fashion revolutionary, it is important to understand the era that she lived in and how the world of fashion differed from the one we know today. In first span of the 1900s, stylish women desired dresses for just about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The way regular people buy clothes today, choosing designs that are manufactured by the millions in multiple sizes and shipped too many stores is called buying off the rack, and means that virtually any shopper in any location has access to up to date fashion trends created by famous designers. In the twenties; however cities like Paris and New York were the homes of the fashion houses where the most talented designers did their work, and wealthy customers travelled to these cities to view seasonal collections and have their clothing custom made (American History Book). Women of the twenties invested in lavish clothes from the most prestigious dressmakers they could afford show off their shapely figures but were not permitted by the customs of the time to expose their skin. World War I soon broke out and changed women s fashion forever. The war empowered women and affected fashion in many ways. Women began working at jobs such as nursing, manufacturing, offices, mining, serving in canteens that required them to wear simpler clothing. Wore short shirts and showing skin. As the clothing change the role in women did as well. In the Roaring Twenties the younger generations of females were name flappers. These women were risk takers; they party, cut their hair, and wore skirts just an inch below their knees. A star was soon to be born. Gabrielle Chanel was born in Saumur in August 1883. • 5. Juxtaposition In Shakespeare In much of literature there exists the juxtaposition of the natural world vs. the unnatural. Human s effect on nature and how it, in turn, influences us, is a crucial theme in many classic works. In Shakespeare s play As You Like It, the initial setting is in the court, however, the characters are soon introduced to the Forest of Ardenne where the magic and the differences of the natural world are clear. Shakespeare uses this juxtaposition of settings to contrast the values of each environment and create resolution for all characters at the end of the play. In the second scene of AYLI, it is established that Duke Senior, Rosalind s father, has been banished to the Forest of Ardenne by his brother, Duke Frederick. Although banished usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the court, there is Duke Senior, Duke Frederick, Rosalind, Touchstone, Celia, Orlando and Oliver, characters that are often described as pretty or able to speak well. This highlights their more dignified, educated backgrounds. Many of them are witty and engage in clever banter throughout the play that gives them a more sophisticated quality. Then there are the country characters: Silvius, Corin, Phebe, William, and Audrey. These characters are obviously less educated, having spent their entire lives in the forest, farming. Their lack of intelligence in the court sense, is shown through the incompatibility of dialogue between city and country characters. For example, Audrey and Touchstone often have issue while talking because Audrey does not know the definition of certain words such as foul and poetical. When she attempts to use these words, incorrectly so, her country idiocy is amplified. The discrepancy between country and court characters is also demonstrated in Touchstone s encounter with William, Audrey s former lover who describes himself as witty. Touchstone arrogantly brushes this notion aside, asserting that only fools call themselves witty. This scene portrays William as a kind of country bumpkin and establishes the idea that while the country may seem like a good solution for city woes, it should not necessarily be considered a permanent solution, because the benefits of court life, in this case education, are ... • 7. The Heavy Burden Pertaining To Racism Summary 487 The Heavy Burden Pertaining to Racism The concept and debate regarding racial equality within this society varies cross culturally. There is indeed a heavy burden and a discrepancy with regards to racism, stemming from a lack of education, towards a lack of opportunities, which leads to oppression. While Tricia Rose explores how the educational system is under representative when it comes to minorities and the oppressed, Beyoncé took a bold political statement while juxtaposing her views towards the radical Black Panther movement. First, Tricia Rose explores the onset of educational equality within this unequal system. She sheds light on the misconception that wealthy individuals are worthy and have received their knowledge as well as money in a just way. Conversely, the poor, unprivileged individuals have not obtained just rewards, where the educational system has created an unnecessary burden for students. This can be exemplified by the fact that students obtaining an education already have their future carved out. For instance, while a white affluent individual will have more opportunities pertaining to attaining a better education and higher grades, a poor African American will not have the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Tricia Rose s speech on educational equality is quite realistic, Beyoncé created an ineffective radical approach to spark violence. • 9. My Favorite Memories Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood were born and raised in a military housing neighborhood located off the base in Warminster, Pennsylvania. My favorite memory however, was the time my brother and I met one of our childhood best friends. I still remember it as if it happened yesterday, no matter how much dust it collects in the back of my head, I can always blow it off and replay it in my mind as if it was the first time seeing it through my eyes. One humid summer day my older brother and I were outside in the backyard. I want to say I was 6 and my brother was 8, but we were probably younger. The small fenced in space was just on the edge of the forest which allowed the ground to be covered in dead pine needles that the trees would cast to the wind. We were bored as ever, discontent with the neglected pair of swings and lonely slide that had been untouched for most of the summer. They called to us, but our boredom, unable to be satisfied by such a simple fix, declined their invitation. We sat in a pair of lawn chairs that were set up against the white fence dividing our yard from the neighbors . That s when I heard the sound of springs on a trampoline only a few backyards down. It was a girl. The first thing I thought: cooties. She looked to be my brother s age, and she was. With that being said, we decided to mess with this poor girl by calling out to her, only to quickly duck down behind the safety of our fence. We were hooligans. This was probably not ... • 10. The Link Between Drama Based Reading Instruction And... Introduction Rao and Cartledge (2009) reported that minority and economically disadvantaged children have difficulty in reading comprehension. Reading comprehension involves reading, decoding, making connections to prior knowledge and thinking deeply about the text (Reading Rockets, 2015). Reading comprehension is a skill that is used inside and outside of the classroom, which means it should be effectively taught. Since this is an important skill that many children struggle with, I would like to focus on assisting children with enhancing their reading comprehension skills. I would like to create a program that focuses on building reading comprehension skills through the implementation of drama techniques. Research Adomat (2012) conducted research on the connection between drama based reading instruction and reading comprehension. Adomat (2012) provided small group reading instruction that utilized drama techniques such as hotseating, role playing and tableaux. Hotseating involves a student or students assuming the role of a character, and respond to questions by their classmates. This allows students to analyze characters, infer, elaborate and think quickly on their feet. When students role play they are in pairs and take turns playing different characters. Lastly, in tableaux after reading a book as a whole group the students had to determine the most important parts and create visuals with their body. At the end of the year, the students took a reading assessment, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Beatific Vision In St. Paul s Analysis Presocratic philosophers in their search for the truth caught glimpses of divinity and of eternal life. This search culminates in Socrates, who through his lifelong search for truth gains an image of the soul and eternal life similar to the Catholic concept of eternal life. In the Phaedrus, Socrates says that when all divine souls go to feast at the banquet (Phaedrus 247b), they ascend to a place beyond heaven to gaze upon a supreme divine being. Similarly, In his letter to the Hebrews, St. Paul speaks about the mass a copy of the heavenly sanctuary the beatific vision. • 13. The Memory Of The Brain The hippocampus refers to the segment of the brain, which is involved in the formation, organization, and storage of memory. It is a structure in the limbic system, which is significant in the formation of new memories and the connection of senses and emotions to memories. Such senses include smell and sound. The structure assumes the shape of a horseshoe paired structure. As such, one hippocampus is located on either side of the brain; the right and the left hemisphere. Structurally, the hippocampus performs the function of memory indexer. It sends memories out to the proper portions of the cerebral hemisphere for purposes of long term storage (Wills 375). It then retrieves this information upon demand. Directionally, the hippocampus location is inside the temporal lobes, which lie close to the amygdala. The long term memory, which forms the main duty of the hippocampus, is symbolic of an amalgamation of data in the conscious memory of human beings. It also forms the memory collected from experiences and knowledge. The hippocampus plays a crucial role in storing all the forms of data. Nonetheless, scientists have tried to explain how the hippocampus aids in memory storage, which has yielded inconclusive results. As such, there have been many experiments that have been put forth by many scientists to explain the function of the hippocampus. The management of short term memory is not a function of the hippocampus. Together with procedural memory, they are regulated by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Same sex couples aren t the optimum environment in which to raise children. That s an interesting one, in light of who society does allow to get married and bring children into their marriage. Check it out: murderers, convicted felons of all sorts, even known child molesters are all allowed to freely marry and procreate, and do so every day, with hardly a second thought by these same critics. So if children are truly the priority here, why is this allowed? Why are the advocates of this argument not working to prohibit the above categories of people from raising children? The fact is that many gay couples raise children, adopted and occasionally their own from failed attempts at heterosexual marriages. • 20. Sociological Attitudes Toward Gender And Sexuality When analysing the current state of sociological attitudes toward gender and sexuality, the overwhelming conclusion is that the hegemonic view in society assumes an inherent binary (Lorber via Steele, 2005, p.75). We categorize people into two groups: male or female; man or woman; masculine or feminine; gay or straight. However, throughout humanity s development, variances to that model have emerged, either choosing to sit somewhere between the binary, or reject the model altogether. These variations challenge the binary assumptions entrenched within society, and as a result, are often denied, misunderstood or ignored entirely. Enter bisexuality. Put simply, the concept of bisexuality is a sexual orientation that lies in the space between heterosexuality and homosexuality. However, society s assumption of sexual essentialism, the idea that sexual orientation is fixed and absolute, has led to a culture that is uncomfortable with people who are sexually ambiguous (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 87). This urges society to assume that, despite the existence of bisexuality, people are really either gay or straight (Valverde via Naugler, 2012, p. 83). This is the phenomenon of bisexual erasure (Eisner, 2013, p. 89). Bisexual erasure affects both bisexual men and women in various ways; however, this essay will focus on the erasure of bisexuality in men in particular. Hoffmann (1986) suggests stereotypes are cognitive constructs created out of a kernel of truth and then distorted beyond reality . Such stereotypes can act as the drivers for violence. Similarly, when terrorists are trained, they are taught hatred towards opposing groups. The terrorist notebooks revealed that students received specific lessons on who should die. Essentially the signal is amplified and applied to the Y plates of the cathode ray tube. A cathode ray tube consists of a number of elements. There is an electron gun that generates an electron beam that is fired along the length of the tube. This beam passes by deflection plates that are used to deflect the beam, as a result of electrostatic attraction and repulsion, and finally the beam hits a phosphor coating on the screen creating a small dot of light. To assist in making the trace as clear as possible, intensity and focus controls are included. The focus ensures that the dot that scans the screen remains as sharp as possible and in this way it can deliver a clear trace. The intensity control is required because the intensity of the dot or trace varies according to the speed at which the scan is made. Controlling the intensity enables a clear trace to be obtained. When the scan is very slow the dot is seen to traverse the screen and it is difficult to visualize the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Factors Of Postnatal Hyperoxia And Premature Aging Postnatal Hyperoxia and Premature Aging It is known that hyperoxic exposure through oxygen supplementation results in increased levels of reactive oxygen species which can subsequently damage DNA (O Reilly, 2001). Telomere sequences protect the end of DNA and these will decrease upon DNA replication thereby limiting the capacity of cells to proliferate. Attrition of telomeres is a characteristic of aging and serves as a major marker of premature aging regardless of phenotype (Lopez Otin, 2013). There are several studies that suggest that shorter telomere lengths can be found in circulating leukocytes of young adults born preterm as compared to term born controls and while this has not be implicated as a general association between telomere ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are numerous lung disease states in which aberrant protein homeostasis is implicated, both in pediatrics and adults. Within the lung, there is data suggesting that protein degradation pathways are dysregulated by hyperoxia and mechanical ventilation through reactive oxygen species production which can be especially challenging to an immature lung (Berkelhamer, 2013; Birukov, 2009). It is not known whether protein degradation alterations have been implicated within the right heart as well. It is unknown to whether mechanical ventilation and hyperoxia trigger autophagy or proteasome dysfunction in infants. In adult mice however, autophagy within the lungs is increased with mechanical ventilation (Lopez Alonso, 2013). Hyperoxia has also been shown to alter autophagy through induction of autophagosome formation within bronchial epithelial cells (Tanaka, 2012). The implication that protein degradation pathways are dysregulated by hyperoxia is especially important given that not only is it implicated in aging within the lung, but that the mitochondrial dysregulation not only seen at work within this body of literature, but also the right ventricles used in this study would suggest that protein degradation could play a role in the right ventricular dysfunction found after exposure to post natal hyperoxia (Goss, 2017). ... Stalk chopping (or shredding) is similar to mowing the lawn, used for breaking down corn stalk residue, using a full size tractor with a PTO driven mower attachment. • 33. Strategies And Methods For Designing A Meeting Essay Meeting Strategies This paper will discuss strategies and methods for designing a meeting. For purposes of this discussion, it is time for the quarterly board of directors meeting. Unfortunately, the meeting will be discussing low profits, pending lawsuits and high employee turnover. To add to the difficulty of delivering bad news, the board of directors are dispersed across the country that will require time zone and location coordination. Barrett (2011) discusses meeting strategies and design. She suggests the following ideas, which are define the meeting purpose, consider the audience, set an agenda, consider the meeting setting (location, seating arrangements, etc.), the meeting time, ascertain needed information, and establish tangible end product(s). Meeting Purpose As Barrett (2011) suggests, one of the most important first steps is to define the meeting purpose. The meeting organizer must evaluate whether the meeting is held to inform, persuade, instruct, or engage. In this scenario, the meetings purpose is a hybrid of informing the board and engaging them in solutions and directions. Consider the audience Next, Barrett (2011) suggests consideration of the audience. For this meeting, the board of directors, who are the decision makers, is the audience. Included along with the board of directors, key personnel such as the budget officer and legal team ought to be included. It contains several of Leopold s thoughts about his interactions with nature. Many of the main concepts and foundations of modern conservation, ecology and land ethic can be found in this book.He explains what it means to be a person of the land and that people don t care about taking care of the land. The summary of Leopold s work is what should be admired, as Leopold was a pioneer in changing the American view of the people s place in nature. One of my favorite quotes in the book was: the modern dogma is comfort at any cost , which is saying that to get comfort, you have to spend money. Another favorite quote was: is education possibly a process of trading awareness for things of lesser worth? What I got out of this is that it s saying the true definition of education and what school is. Leopold s views on the world are very good and they show how much we don t think about the world and the land ethic. Also, it shows how all we care about is comfort and convenience. His view of being out with nature is also good because our world is filled with technology and many people forget about nature and how important it is to us. The through line that I think defines him is Earth Keeper, his views of how technology and people hurt nature and how we need to protect it. Plot Differences In Disney s Version Of Cinderella There were a few plot differences in Disney s version of Cinderella and the story of Cinderella that we read in class during the Fairy Tale segment. One of the changes included the number of balls that were held. In my opinion this was a bigger change because in the movie it is all built up for one ball and in the original text version there are two balls held. At the first ball, Cinderella realizes that the Prince has an interest in her. When she comes home that night she wishes to attend the second ball. The second ball is like the one Disney portrays. It is when Cinderella loses her slipper and the prince finds it on the stairs. The first ball puts a twist on the story. Readers may be expecting it to be like the movie. Therefore, they expect ... The Devil s Den is a snack bar on a college campus, which employed approximately 36 students with 6 of them in management positions.
