This presentation first explains the TerraNova test. It then guides educators on how to analyze and gather data from specific TerraNova reports to drive instruction

3. Chosen by ACSI to use in schools
Norm-referenced test
How did your students do compared to the national norm group?
Content is selected to align with standards commonly addressed in state and
national standards:
National Assessment of Educational Progress
International Reading Association
National Council of Teachers of English
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
National Science Standards and Frameworks
National Council for the Social Studies
4. Mean
Median
Scale Score
Grade Equivalent
National Stanine
National Percentile
NP Range
Mean Scale Score
Median National Percentile
5. Mean: average of numbers
Median: the middle of a range of numbers
Scale Score: an even interval numeric scale that spans from Kindergarten to 12th
grade
Grade Equivalent: the year and month of school in which the students’ score is to
be interpreted
National Stanine: scale that divides scores of the norming population into 9
groups
National Percentile: score that describes students’ achievement to the norming
group
NP Range **** is this worth sharing*****
Objectives Performance Index: number that tells us how many question a student
would have gotten right
How well would this student have done if there had been 100 similar items?
6. Estimate of the number of items a student would be expected to score answer
correctly if there had been 100 similar items
“How well would this student have done if there had been 100 similar items?
Mastery
Partial Mastery
Non-Mastery
7. Find a buddy with the same letter as you.
Have one person follow the instruction to “Quizizz”
When finished please return to your seat and wait quietly.
8. Serves as a quick overview to areas of strengths and weaknesses in content area
Quickly assess area where students are below the national average
9.
10.
11. Quickly identify areas where we have students in the below average/ average
range.
Helps us know what areas are of up most importance to differentiate.
12. Identify categories where you have students in the below average/ average range.
Identify which category you have the largest range.
13. Percentage of group that is in high mastery for the listed objective
Evaluate strengths and weaknesses in curriculum
14.
15.
16. Shows the average OPI score compared to the National
Compares average OPI score to the moderate mastery range for that objective
17.
18.
19. Objectives and subskills are outlined
Examples of questions for each
20. What areas are we in the average or below average range?
Is there a trend across years?
24. Summary of the students’ performance on objectives
25.
26.
27.
28. Consider what you observe on a daily basis from this student
Consider formative and summative assessments.
Consider Terra Nova Test.
Are there any similarities? Use those to help you make goals for that student.
29. Reading A to Z (group students based on weaknesses and strengths)
Math: Khan Academy

Here are 2 questions that I want to help you better answer after this professional development today.
What is the terra nova? I want you to know more about this test and to be able to explain its components and scores better than when you walked in this morning.
How can it help you? I want you to know how to inerpret the results to affect your curriculum planning and individualized instruction.
This is not just some random test Mr. Manning chose. All ACSI schools use the test in addition to other private and public schools.
Norm-referenced test: students from all areas of US are considered when creating this test (add geographies, demographics, SES, popultation) to ensure the test items are relevant and applicable to a variety of types of students; “normed” from public and private schools…. This should be considered when looking at comparison to National Standards... The ”range” of numbers is very large!
Content is selected to align with commonly addressed state and national standards.
Research shows that accessing prior knowledge is a great thing. We can retain more information if the new information is built on existing infromation.
So find a partern who has the same color as you on your card and talk to them about these qustions. When you finish stand with your partner raising both hands in the air.
Mean
Median (some testing professionals prefer the median because it is less likely to be affected by extreme scores)
Scale Score: these scores are 100-900, basis for norm-referenced test, even if students take a different level test, they should in theory still the score the same.
Grade Equivalent: 6.5, 6th grade 6, 5th month (September is 1, June is 9)
GRADE EQUIVALENTS ARE NOT THAT GREAT! “Grade equivalents that are within approximately two years of the student’s actual grade placement are generally accurate descriptions of the student’s level of achievement.” CTB generally recommends they not be used.
6.6 in 3rd grade math means that the student is scoring well above average for the third grade.
National Stanine: 1-3 below average, 4-6 average, 7-9 above average
Disadvantage is the lack of precision, for example a stanine score of 5 could have a national percentile as low as 49 & high as 59
National Percentile: 65 means that the students score is higher than 65% of the groups
The OPI is reported for each objectives measured by the test.
At least 4 items have to be measured in order for that objective to be included in the report.
This is one of the most useful things that we can use to for planning strategies and activities.
***7th grade group list from last year***
MNCE: Mean Normal Curve Equivalent
MSS: Mean Scale Score: average of all scale scores
MDNP: Median National Percentile: Middle of the set of national percentile scores
Low/High NP: Range of National Percentiles
*Graph just shows us the range of our students, and the diamond shows us the median
*** first grade
Percent of all students in that grade who achieved high mastery
Percent of students in that class that achieved high mastery
*Average OPI for the group
*National OPI Average
*Difference
*Moderate Mastery Range for that objective (Each skill is different)
*Breakdown for each class
Look to see what areas we are low in.
Is that a skill or objective we expect from our students in this grade?
If so, look at data for the past 5 years. Is there a trend?
If so, this is an identified area of weakness.
*Student’s OP score
*National OPI to use to compare
*Difference
*Moderate Master Range
*Graph…. Bar is showing the moderate master range
*circle tells us if student is at high, moderate, or low mastery,
*Line is refered to as the “confidence line” where we expect the student to score
Now see if you can explain these results with someone at your table
