Abstract
Rainforests are the predominant natural vegetation throughout the wet tropics. The defining
characteristics of a tropical rainforest are temperature and rainfall. Wherever temperature is high
enough and rainfall heavy and regular enough, there is rainforest (Bagheera, 1996). Tropical
rainforests of all kinds once covered approximately 14 percent of the Earth s surface, more than eight
million square miles (Conservation International, 1998); forming an equatorial green belt around the
Earth rich in diverse plant and animal species. Humans have already destroyed half of this forest area,

In contrast to destructive practices that profit a few but destroy the forest for all, intact tropical
rainforests provide long term, widely distributed benefits. These benefits include increased
biodiversity, protection of wildlife, food, fuel, medicines, building materials, and global climate
stabilization (Bagheera, 1996,p.2). Due to the magnitude of tropical deforestation that has occurred, its
potential affect on loss of biodiversity and alteration of world climate, this is arguably the most
important global conservation issue today (Kricher, 1997).
Discussion
Global warming and tropical deforestation have a symbiotic relationship, each being a causal factor
for the breakdown of the other. For each hectare of forest that is cleared and burned, about 220 tons of
carbons are released into the atmosphere (Holloway, 1993). Carbon is released primarily in the form
of CO2, carbon dioxide, with the burning of fallen vegetation from cleared forest. In addition, the
cleared forest is no longer there to act as a sink for carbon dioxide to take it up in the process of
photosynthesis (Kricher, 1997). The build up of carbon dioxide causes sunlight to be trapped in the
atmosphere and through the greenhouse effect the Earth s temperature rises (Myers, 1979). Over the

Chin must think about who would spend more on PPI s brand when OCI has a similar quality for a

Another issue is that there are many competitors out there. These competitors are hungry for business

After evaluating a number of issues that affect PPI it all comes to one central problem, how can Chin

on the details of a contract, compromising company policy, forming a buying contract with OCI, and
considering other market options. Diane needs to present the benefits of contracting with OCI to the
president of PPI. He could then see what difference contracting could make and what can be lost if
deciding not to form a contract with OCI. This needs to be done by showing the contrast between

Jim Crow was a character portrayed in Minstrelsy shows to be goofy, drunk, lazy, and uneducated.
This character set a very harsh stereo type for African Americans. Jim Crow became a common racial
slur. According to Dr. David Pilgrim of Ferris State University by 1838, the term Jim Crow was being
used as a slur for African Americans which was not as offensive as nigger, but more similar to coon or

buckthorn combined with antihypertensive drugs such as Capoten, Vasotec, Cozaar, Cardizem, and
Lasix may increase the effect of these drugs, dangerously lowering blood pressure. Extreme caution
should be exercised with concomitant use of either combination and a physician should be consulted.
Individuals taking drugs for diabetes by mouth or insulin, should exercise caution when using sea
buckthorn. Sea buckthorn is known to lower blood sugar levels and medication adjustments may be
necessary. Sea buckthorn oil should also be used cautiously with antiulcer medications due to possible
additive effects. Furthermore, it may significantly reduce the effect of immunosuppressant drugs and
antibiotics. Sea buckthorn may also prove an additive effect on chemotherapy drugs based on
concomitant use.
