Wildfire Effects
Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is a keystone species (Tomback et al. 2001), forming subalpine and
treeline forests that supply food and shelter for hundreds of plant and animal species. This trait makes
whitebark pine a quintessential high elevation conifer and it forms unique habitat types with both
geographic and successional variation that support considerable biodiversity across the higher
mountains of the United states and Canada. (Tomback et al. 2001, Tomback and Achuff 2010).
Whitebark pine is a foundation species. The tree stands create a stable environment for other trees and
plants by holding rocks and soil on slopes where other trees cannot survive (Arno and Hoff 1989). It
provides shelter and a gentler microenvironment where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wildfire and prescribed burns have a variety of impacts on wildlife and habitats, both direct and
indirect (Wasserman 2015). Direct effects include fatality, emigration out of burned areas, immigration
into new areas. Indirect effects is changes in vegetative structure, diversity, species composition, and
other components of their habitat. Species responses to wildfire depends on these direct and indirect
effects of fire and how fire regimes and fire severity impacted the landscape (Fulé et al. 2003,
Reynolds et al. 2013). Herbivores, such as elk, deer, and bighorn sheep, respond in post fire
wilderness due to the open dense canopies that allow an increase in understory plants that herbivores
feed on (Bailey and Whittam 2002). For example, elk prefer forage quality that provide their required
calorie intake to allow them to successfully produce milk. During early succession, mid succession,
and late succession of post fire habitat, forage quality is at its highest during early succession stages in
both mesic and xeric sites (Swanson et al. 2011). This suggest that herbivores, like elk, would utilize
these early succession post fire areas. Carnivores and mesocarnivores respond to post fire changes as
well. Male american black bears and grizzly bears used burned sites increasing their home range post
fire. Canids, such as the coyote, use both burned and unburned areas due to food availability
(Cunningham et al 2002). The Mount Washburn sites are in landscapes that experienced high severity
fires and have an abundance of whitebark pine deadfall in the area. This overabundance of deadfall
might detter larger herbivores and carnivores decreasing wildlife species diversity. Wildlife species
diversity is an intuitive way to determine an ecosystem s health and status (Edwards and Abivardi
1998). Wildlife species diversity boosts ecosystem productivity due to diversification

Jansen Vs Beet
The first artists that shows u show art can connect nature with humans is Theo Jansen. Jansen has
made these exotic and giant sculptures called Strandbeests. The Strandbeests also known as beach
animals are made of PVC pipes that gives the animal the ability to stand. They work in multiple places
such as soft places and places with sand. The difference is that in soft places they need a special drive
system that use pressed to move the Strandbeest and in places with sand they use the wind to give
them motion to work. As Jansen states in his interview, And so over the years, the generations became
better and better at surviving the storms and the sand and the water on the beach and that connect the
Strandbeests as a product of development in nature, getting different kinds of adaptation as human
does and showing aspects related to human reproduction, Through the beests, Jansen connects beest s
reproduction with human reproduction, therefore nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Jansen affirms, People think I have the feeling like you feel to other persons, like your feel to your
dog or your children. And no, I see it as a totally different specimen that we are, so I don t feel love to
them. Of course, I love them but in a totally different way than I think of other persons. It´s not the
personal kind of love, it s the love for mathematics or love for mechanics (Riley). People think he
loves them as another human being, but the reality is that he loves them because of their creation. He
uses mathematics and mechanics to form these creatures. He feels passion and love in the way of
adapting these creatures into our

Social Psychological Themes In The Film Cool Hand Luke
Cool Hand Luke
The film Cool Hand Luke, written by Donn Pearce, directed by Stuart Rosenberg and released in
1967. This film is taking place in a prison and it talks about the main character, Lucas Jackson, played
by Paul Newman, which is a former soldier but sent to prison for two years since cutting the heads off
parking meters while drunk. This setting of the film is petty irony a soldier was sent to jail because
destruction of public property. Through the character of the Boss, Luke, Dragline (George Kennedy)
and other prisoners, the film Cool Hand Luke demonstrate the social psychological themes of
obedience to authority, conformity, and non conformity.
First and foremost, at the scene that all the prisoners go out to chop weeds by the side of the road

one of the convict said Man, you think you been working hard? This mother s going to break your

but none of them are trying to against the role. They are adhering to group norms and standards in
prison. Conformity to social norms may also be a utility seeking activity, less in term or directly
avoiding punishment or currying favor but rather as a means to stabilize relationships and enhance the
predictability of behavior in the group. (DeLamater et al., 2014). All the prisoner is conformity even

A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay
A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller A view from the bridge by Arthur Miller is a tragic intense
play about family struggle, lust, passion and deceit. My aim is too look at the relationship of Catherine
and Eddie. To understand the relationship, we must understand the atmosphere and culture. To do this
we need to know why Miller wrote the play, background history and why this is significant to
understanding the relationship between Catherine and Eddie. Arthur miller wrote the play in reflection
of his own life and experiences. During World War 2 he worked as a ship fitter where he met many
Italians, many of which were Sicilians like the characters in the play. At the time Brooklyn s
population was increasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this and his own experiences he wrote A view from the bridge . The main character in the play is
about is Eddie Carbone, an Italian longshoreman in New York, with a loving wife Beatrice, and her
niece Catherine. The plays trouble begins when Beatrice s cousins Rudolph and Marco come from
Italy for work in Brooklyn. Alferi is the character that plays as a narrator as well as a character.
Through Alferi the audience can understand the play more because he is able to talk to the audience.
Alferi first introduces us to Eddie carbone. We can tell that Eddie is the main character by the stage
directions (…in which he is highlighted among the men) and we know there will be a tragic Alferi
predicts this … sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course with the word bloody
we can tell that whatever the tragic there will be some sort of death or a blood related scene (fight). In
the first scene we meet Eddie and Catherine together. This is when we start to understand the
relationship between the two by the language they use with each other, the dialogue, and actions they
use with each other. Hi Eddie! (Eddie is pleased and therefore shy about it) the first instinct is that
they are going out with each other. Catherine has a new skirt. When Catherine runs her hands over her
skirt the point is even more obvious. By doing this it is like she is flirting with Eddie.

Compare And Contrast The Sniper And The Man He Killed
Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind. John Fitzgerald Kennedy wrote
this quote to the UN General Assembly on September 25, 1961. In other words Kennedy is saying that
people should stop war because war tears people apart. In the writings The Sniper by Liam O Flaherty
and The Man he Killed by Thomas Hardy they also talk about how war tears people apart. These two
writings are both very similar although they have some differences in literary devices plot, irony, and
theme.
In these two works there are similarities and differences in plot. A similar plot from both stories is that
the protagonist, a soldier, had to kill someone. He must kill the enemy that enemy and he could not
use his rifle. (O Flaherty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If it wasn t for war, in both stories, they would have been friends. When the sniper reached the
laneway on the street level, he felt a sudden curiosity as to the identity of the enemy sniper whom he
had killed. (O Flaherty 208) In this quote from the The Sniper the main character wants to know the
person he killed, because he might like him and wanted to be friends with him. In the two stories the
main characters were both good people and felt remorse. You d treat if met where any bar is (Hardy
19) If both the men weren t soldiers, they would have met at a bar and had a drink together. The story
The Sniper has situational irony. Suddenly from the opposite roof a shot rang out and the sniper
dropped his rifle with a curse. (O Flaherty 207) The shooter wasn t expecting this outcome, because he
got shot instead of the other guy. In the poem The Man He Killed there is verbal irony. I shot him dead
because because he was my foe (Hardy 9 10) The man he killed was only his enemy on the battlefield,
but he felt like the could have been friends. Irony plays a big part in both writings because both the
men could ve been friends if they weren t soldiers at

Exorcisms And Demons Research Paper
Demons can be transferred from one person or thing to another. Demons can enter animals and control
their bodily movements . It is important to know that the demons can inhabit any living thing that they
would like because then they can hurt others from what living thing they inhabit. Demons can do what
they want unless you get someone to do an exorcism on you so then the demon will leave your body. I
m trying to prove that it is true, If u can do something about it, and how that can happen to people.
Exorcisms get the demon out of someone so the demon will stop hurting the person or thing. My

Citizen Kane Essay
Orson Welles cinematic classic, Citizen Kane, is a film that centers on a group of reporter s
investigation into the meaning of Charles Foster Kane s last word, Rosebud. Through their
investigation of his last words, the team of reporters, is presented with an almost, but not quite,
complete picture of Citizen Kane s life. By assuming that the man s last word was as grandiose as his
life, the reporters miss out on the bigger, more holistic picture, which is Charles Foster Kane s life.
The reporters emphasis of attention on what turns out to be a small and trivial, although they never
find that out, aspect of Kane s life, make Citizen Kane a perfect example of the pitfalls of over
interpretation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whenever something is broken down into its component parts and these component parts are analyzed
and interpreted individually, some of their meaning is lost. For example, a doctor who specializes in
the heart, a cardiologist, knows a whole lot about a small aspect of the greater whole, the human body.
By studying the heart in isolation, with no connection to the rest of the body or its organs, some of the
hearts meaning is lost. Just saying that the heart pumps blood is meaningless to the layperson ignorant
of biology. The questions of why the heart pumps blood, what is blood, and how does the heart
interact with other organs still remain. Not to mention more specific questions such as how other
organs, such as teeth, which an orthodontist would be more likely to know, are effected by and affect
the heart. A movement within psychology, known as Gestalt psychology, summed this holistic
ideology up nicely with its tenet The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
It follows from this argument that if a piece of art is broken down into its component parts to be
analyzed and interpreted, the form or structure of the artwork is ignored. By focusing one s attention
on specific and possibly trivial aspects of the piece of art s content, the piece s overall structure is not
considered. In respect to Citizen Kane the over interpretation of Rosebud, leads the reporters to ignore
the structure of

Modern vs. Classical Music
Though the delight of listening to a brand new track on a compact disc with a big name artist has a
similar emotional feel for modern day people, as it would have felt for people listening to a live
symphony during the Classical era, the ability the artists, and those involved with them, have with the
increase of new technology and business schemes has allowed their base of listeners to be on a global
scale for millions, if not yet billions. During the late 17th century to early 19th century, the
phenomenon that is the evolution of Liturgical Music had hit the Classical era; extremely skilled
artists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert were producing masterpieces for the courts of
the upper class. Because the culture that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The music medium has exploded into a worldwide cultural phenomenon, where ideas and thoughts of
composition and sound can be exchanged with ease through radios, computers, concerts and
Vinyl/CD/Tape/MP3, which leads to constantly evolving music, rather than the antiquated notion of
music being a regional cultural experience. In terms of the artist in the modern music scene, the skill
and dedication required is equally demanding if not more so to rise to the top in this competitive
industry, though the reward is far greater in terms of fame, wealth and social status; all of which
Mozart strived for but never was able to attain despite being perhaps one of the greatest musical
talents the world has seen yet. Also with the expansion of audiences, infusions of genres and
capabilities with technology, modern society has seen a trend in corporations fabricating bands,
composing music for artists that fit with the cultural fads and electronically perfecting acoustics, all of
which are ways for these companies to make quick profit. The downfall in this is the loss of
appreciation of music by these corporations and eventually listeners, in terms of the emotion, talent
and sacrifice that it takes away from the real musicians trying to make a name for themselves and their
careers, such as Schubert

What Is The Theme In Sestina
Hidden between the thirty nine lines of Sestina, lay some major themes in literature. Even when the
September rain falls and in the failing light , the house is still a secure and warm place. But where is
this sense of comfort in Sestina? It appears that even though both the grandmother and the child are in
the chilly house, they are far apart from each other. She busies herself and tries to hide her emotions
while it draws in the other end of the kitchen. The grandmother s actions create a sense of secrecy and
hint that she hides something. Despite the brief moments of contact when showing the picture the
child drew, the two characters are mentally immersed in their own worlds. Another Bishop s poem that
deals with the theme of home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She successfully creates a mournful tone by putting tears as one of the six final words. The mood is
led by feelings of sadness and sorrow. However, the reader does not know why. Bishop keeps this
sense of secrecy by revealing the grief but not the reason behind it. She uses visual imagery to
establish a simple, falsely harmonic domestic scene. The tension in the house is hidden behind the
silence in it. Bishop personifies the objects in the house to break it. Furthermore, the words of the
objects might clarify what is the reason for the grandmother s mood: It was to be. Says the Marvel
Stove. I know what I know, says the almanac. Apparently, something predetermined has happened
which relates to the theme of change, discussed in the previous section. This theme is closely related
to the role of the almanac. Its function is to predict the weather for the next year. Additionally, its
importance in the poem shows the role of the weather in the grandmother s life. The hanging almanac
is associated with a bird using the simile birdlike . The anaphora hovers suggests that it has control
over the child and the grandmother. Again, with the use of vivid language, Bishops includes the
almanac in the scene: the little moons fall down like tears/ from between the pages of the almanac .
The moons which resemble tears add up to the sense of sadness in the poem. Additionally, the

Nature Emerson Analysis
In Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson, there are many ideas that Emerson explored during the passage.
One is the view we have on the stars. Emerson feels like we do not value the stars as we should. We
would view them in a whole new way if they were only present every a thousand years. We would
have a different opinion of them, and would watch out for them when we knew they would come out.
Another idea that Emerson focuses on in the excerpt is if an individual does have a bad attitude, they
look at nature in a bad way. If they have a good attitude, they look at it in a positive way. One other
idea that Emerson pursues is the idea of the transparent eyeball. We are following the over soul, we
are apart of the spirit. we can see everything, but not everything can see us. The last idea that I will
talk about is the view between adults and children. When children are young, they love to play
outside, be in the cool breeze, or play in the snow. Individuals as they grow to be adults they start to
lose that love. They lose the way nature is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this excerpt his ideas kind of grow to be the same thing. A idea that he talks a lot about in Self
Reliance is accepting yourself. A lot of people find flaws and mistakes in themselves. They get into a
slump, and try to form with society. Accept yourself for who you are, not for what others want you to
be. A second idea that Emerson talks about is finding happiness. He talks about when you put your
and soul into something, it will make you happy. When it turns out good, knowing you have done your
best, is an amazing time where you find happiness. Another idea that he talks about is not worrying
about being judged. Learn after you accept yourself, to not conform with society. Be an individual
who is not scared what others think. Do not let society hold you back from who you are. If you be who
you are individually, you will find life more

Zoot Suits
Make love, not war was a common slogan during the counter culture in the 1960 s. The national split
between opposers and supporters of the Vietnam War, greatly contributed to the counter culture.
Hippies, as part of the counter culture, were seen as outsiders as they were outspoken about their
views and their lifestyle was perceived as rather eccentric to many Americans.15 While their drug use,
dress, and radical mindset came as a shock to many, the hippie s opposition to the Vietnam War and
their deep concern made a lasting impact on society through their promotion of peace and unity as
well as their drive for change.16 Manson, during his trial testimony, accuses the court of waging war

Many workers were needed in both the service as well as the agricultural sectors in order to occupy
the empty positions of those serving in the war. Countless temporary workers from Mexico were
brought to the the United States in order to fill these positions, and many white Americans were not
accepting of the idea. Mexican Americans, as a minority group, were living in segregated communities
and endured much employment discrimination, whereby they received low wages, the only jobs
available to them.24 As part of the war effort, the United States began making changes to their
resources by restricting wool which prohibited the manufacturing of Zoots Suits. However, many
Mexican American youth continued to purchase and wear the suit through bootleg manufacturers,
which caused racial tension as their act of doing so was contradictory to regulations set in place and
were therefore seen as un American .25 Their sense of fashion, made them outsiders, and their dress
was greatly resented by soldiers and sailors. While many Mexican Americans were serving in World

and soldiers of Mexican Americans was justified as an act of patriotism and viewed the Mexican
American s unique attire as a way of defying the regulations of

This chapter provides a good history of Youngstown from the early 1980 s to the early 2000s with a
lot focus on the rising crimes that plagued the town. The authors in this chapter at the beginning talks
about how the view of Youngstown went from this image deindustrialization to an image of a crime
infested and political corrupted town (Pg. 190). Linkon and Russo put a lot of focus on the many
stereotypes of Youngstown with most of them holding truth. These stereotypes that read involved
murder, poverty, mafia involvement, and corrupted politicians. The Vindicator reported that
Youngstown during the 1990 s had one of the highest murder rates for a city over fifty thousand (Pg.
193). The chapter goes into more detail about the white color crimes, and the political corruption
through the mob as the chapter goes on. In 1998, George Magazine listed Youngstown as one the ten
most corrupted cities in American, which only added to the title of Crime Town, USA (Pg. 213).
Although this chapter highlights the negative aspects that came from the deindustrialization in
Youngstown, Ohio, it really is telling the story of most towns that are inside the rust belt. So, as a
person who has been to Portsmouth, Cleveland, and Columbus I have seen what deindustrialization
has done to this once great

George Orwell s The Brave New World
In both texts, Nineteen Eighty Four and Brave New World it is clear from the start the societies show a
heavy reliance on state control as a means of maintaining the dystopian civilizations. George Orwell s
Nineteen Eighty Four is a powerful presentation of a dystopian society under the influence and control
of a totalitarian government. Orwell uses the character of Winston as a vehicle to explore the extent of
the governments oppressive techniques. Through clever use of free indirect speech as the narrative

In Brave New World, technology enables the population to be manipulated and have their values
defined from a young and impressionable age. It is the key to ultimate social control and it is used in
that way; without the advanced technology the society of Brave New World would not be able to
achieve such powerful control. Technology is necessary for all of the vital aspects of the mass
reproduction with medical interference. For example the Bokanovsky process and hypnopaedia
conditioning both rely heavily on medical and technological advances. As a result the society is
fragmented and unchanging. The plot s heavy reliance on science could be argued to be due to Huxley
s affluent background and family history within the science field. His grandfather was nicknamed

In Nineteen Eighty Four technology is used very differently, it essence is still ¬¬the same (social

Extreme Altruism...
INTRO 500words
For my Personal Interest Project I have chosen to study extreme altruism, people who risk their for the
good of another person. The reasoning that got my attention at choosing this topic was that of a
personal family death which involved Altruism that occurred when I was younger.
My links to the course are conformity and non conformity, continuity and change and how people
behave in groups, also what aspect of identity or self encourages some to care to the extreme and
express a willingness to risk their life while others do not. My link to continuity and change focuses
on past generation and whether people were more or less likely inclined to help others.
My research methods include interviews, data analysis and a questionnaire. I used interviews to create
three case studies about people who have risked their life to save other people. Data analysis was used
to analyse the nature of recipients of the 2015 bravery awards in Australia and to establish any trends
in the nature of the altruistic behaviour. My questionnaire involved 540 respondents, chosen from a
variety of workplaces, schoolmates and family and friends in a provincial city, I chose this technique
as it allows me to get a more accurate first person response and gives me an access a range of
opinions.

smoke and sulfur dioxide produced from the burning of coal can combine with fog to create industrial
smog. In high concentrations, industrial smog can be extremely toxic to humans and other living
organisms. London is world famous for its episodes of industrial smog. ... Show more content on

These conditions include :
• Precipitation can alleviate photochemical smog as the pollutants are washed out of the atmosphere
with the rainfall. • Winds can blow photochemical smog away replacing it with fresh air. However,
problems may arise in distant areas that receive the pollution. • Temperature inversions can enhance
the severity of a photochemical smog episode. Normally, during the day the air near the surface is
heated and as it warms it rises, carrying the pollutants with it to higher elevations. However, if a
temperature inversion develops pollutants can be trapped near the Earth s surface. Temperature
inversions cause the reduction of atmospheric mixing and therefore reduce the vertical dispersion of
pollutants. Inversions can last from a few days to several weeks.
4. Topography is another important factor influencing how severe a smog event can become.
Communities situated in valleys are more susceptible to photochemical smog because hills and
mountains surrounding them tend to reduce the air flow, allowing for pollutant concentrations to rise.
In addition, valleys are sensitive to photochemical smog because relatively strong temperature
inversions can frequently develop in these areas. Possible Solutions
A possible solution to the problem of photochemical smog is to enforce stricter emission laws all over
the globe. Many countries have varying laws on the legal limits of NOx, Carbon Dioxide, and Sulfur
Dioxide.

Hollywood Rating System
In order for us to stop the constant bombardment of uninspired adaptations, sequels, prequels,
remakes, and reboots we need to create a new rating system, one which doesn t stifle the creativity of
talented filmmakers by slapping their films with arbitrary ratings. This new rating system would also
abolish the supervisory role for movie theaters. The rule that kids must be accompanied by a parent or
adult guardian to an R rated film is based on the notion that a 14 year old can be shielded from
worrisome material by an 18 year old. This is such a ridiculous concept seeing as we live in a time
where it s unbelievably easy to get access to much more explicit content on the internet than anything
you d find in a standard R rated film. Speaking of, this new rating system would also end R ratings for

We also need to cut down on piracy so that Hollywood studios have more of a reason to produce
original films. That means being cautious on how we educate about piracy with a younger
demographic since a lot of teenagers and young adults today don t see illegal piracy in quite as black
and white terms as people use to. Instead of lecturing about the legality of piracy, content creators
should instead try to focus on forming a genuine, connected relationship with their audience. They
should also choose to share some of their work with the public free of charge. Creators who have done
this in the past have received plenty of financial support from the communities that they built. As I
mentioned before, piracy is unlikely to go away altogether but in order for it to be reduced,
filmmakers who are opposed to piracy and people who engage in it need to find common ground and
this can be done by the creators understanding their audience s

Theodore Roethke s Root Cellar
Theodore Roethke s poem Root Cellar was the inspiration for my poem Homecoming. Root Cellar by
Theodore Roethke was one of his greenhouse poems, which he wrote during his youth while he spent
time with his father in the large greenhouse they owned. I was captivated by his lyric poetry because
of its strong rhythm and natural imagery. Theodore uses phonic repetition and alliteration to set the
tone of the poem. I believed to that the succeeding images of death and decay, ws meant to give
readers a sense of uneasiness and foreboding. I created Homecoming by rewriting Root Cellar and
changing all of its original nouns and adjectives to ones of my own. By doing so I was able to create

I knew that the poem needed revision because I didn t know what to title it, which meant that I didn t

another stanza that I could use to introduce a main character and a subtle tones of love. I also want
more in depth with setting details and used metaphors/figurative language to convey the intense bond
between the human main character and the inanimate subject. The poem is about a sick elderly woman
that returns home to die peacefully in the place she is most comfortable, her childhood bedroom,
where she experienced some of the most substantial experiences of her young life. I imagined that
when she returned to the house, it was worn down and vacant because no one wanted to live there in
the condition that it was in. I also imagined that she empathized with the house and her bedroom
because it was as tired as she was. I wanted to convey the peace that she felt standing amongst the
memories in the room and died tranquilly and then the room and house collapsed with her in it. As if it
was waiting for hr to come home to give up life, thus I named the poem

Pennell s Argument Analysis
After reading this issue, and making some research in the subject, I believe that this is not an opinion
article. The writer, Jay Pennell, did not state his position about the race and the NASCAR restart rules.
In fact, he just gave an overview of what happened at Talladega Superspeedway. So, he cited the
drivers opinions and comments about the race, and described what happened. It is, indeed, a
controversial issue but Pennel did not give his opinion. My general feeling about this issue is that this
problem seems to be something that has occurred before. It was not the first time that a botched restart
affected the outcome of the race. As a consequence, on October 20th, the NASCAR made changes on
the rules to reduce to one attempt instead of the customary three tries at a green white checkered
finish. I believe that Chamerond used the precise language and vocabulary. I am not familiarized with
this subject but Chamerond seems to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, it is a subject that he is confident about. He used the proper vocabulary and he asked questions and

argument and gave space for discussion: The big question was? With all the information that
NASCAR have regarding restarts on races. How is it that this keeps happening at different times
during this NASCAR season? Also, why hasn t this been addressed some time ago and will it be

everyone knows about NASCAR. When I first read it, I did not understand the article so much
because I am not familiarized with the subject. So, I had to make some research to fully understand it.
That is why, I believe that you have to talk to your reader like he or she does not have any idea of your
topic. Chamerond could found a way to explain a little bit more about the restart process and the

Aristotle And Jean Jacques Rousseau And Rousseau On The...
People such as Buddhist monks devote their lives to the search for virtue through isolation and
meditation. Others believe that just simply living your life as a generous person and practicing self
preservation is virtuous. These two different, yet similar ideas of virtuous living came from the two
philosophers known as Aristotle and Jean Jacques Rousseau and their works in the Nicomachean
Ethics and Discourse on The Origin of Inequality. Aristotle believed that the individual had to meet
multiple qualifications in order to truly be virtuous; rather than Rousseau who thought a virtuous
person simply needed to preserve their own life and have the virtue pity, or defined by him as your
natural impulses. While they both disagree on whether impulse or habit is the key to becoming
virtuous or even what virtue is, they agree that we pursue the virtuous life in order to avoid pain. Jean
Jacques Rousseau in The Origin of Inequality talks briefly about a savage man in the state of nature
and what makes him virtuous. Rousseau said, Qualities that can harm an individual s preservation
vices in him and those than can contribute to its virtues. In that case it would be necessary to call the
one who least resists the simple impulses of nature the most virtuous, (35). When reading this, one can
clearly see Rousseau depicts the virtuous person being the savage man who gives into his impulses.
He believes that man should only fulfill his natural impulses of sex, sleep, and food in

Instrumental Music Interpretation
The way chords, melodies, and the orchestration is arranged in a song has a powerful impact on the
spiritual impact of instrumental music. Each facet of music is a part of creating not only an emotion,
but also a spiritual implication. Although music can be interpreted differently depending on which part
of the world you live in, every song is created with intent and it is important to look at how those
intentions affect people.
Chords play a very prominent role in how we portray the emotion of a song.
Songs that contain a decent amount of dissonant sounds typically cause the listener to perceive the
music as having a negative and dismal connotation. However this varies depending on which part of
the world is interpreting the music. In western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is still an importance in the way that the pattern of the melody is structured. For example, if the
composer does not follow the rules for species counterpoint, the music could be interpreted as having
a wicked sound in nature.
Finally, the intent that a composer has when writing music, I believe, has the most powerful impact of
them all. The message that a composer has when he writes an instrumental composition plays a vital
role in the spiritual aspects of a song. If the intent is to write a song that contains a spirit of witchcraft
and wickedness, then that song will carry out that spiritual force that has been placed upon it since the
birth of the song. If the intent of the composer is to create a song about evil, then
God s anointing is not likely to be found on that song. However if the song is full of praise and
worship to God, then that song has a special marking on it and is more likely to be used to bring glory
to God. Ultimately, God can take anything and redeem it for his glory, but the spiritual implications
caused from a composer meaning spiritual harm through a song is most likely not going to lead a
listener

Don Giovanni Essay
Produced by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787, Don Giovanni is regarded as one the best operas
ever made. The piece is based on the legend of Don Juan, an illusory libertine and seducer of women
(Kerns, 2010). At first, Mozart s opera seems more like a story of the romantic adventures of a
dissolute nobleman and his disgrace. However, there is much more to Don Giovanni than just a series
of events and serious laughs, just as the protagonist is much more than a notorious, single minded, and
unprincipled seducer. Closer examination of the piece reveals its core themes of social classes and
divisions as depicted by Leporello s complaints about his servitude to his employer in the first scene
(Mozart, Fisher, Ponte, 2007). The play also touches on vital human traits and principles, including
loyalty, faithfulness, and sincerity. More importantly, Don Giovanni centers on the ambiguity intrinsic
to human relations, the intricate connection between life and death, and the interminable tension
between love and the risk of its extermination.
Don Giovanni can be characterized as a comic opera due to its indulgence with tragic themes, such as
crime and murder, in an astoundingly funny manner. By definition, an opera is an art form in which
the composers combine dramatic works with musical scores and libretto or text in theatrical settings.
The singing may be either melodic or recitative. Traditionally, operas incorporate most of the typical
elements of spoken theatre, including

include SNAP. The federal government currently provides 56.3% of the funding allocated to the
Health and Human Services Commission and its various subdivisions, which comes to $47.2 billion
(Texas State Legislature). This money would be taken away if the state of Texas failed to have a SNAP
program that met certain federal standards of success. As a result, this money goes towards several
programs including Medicaid, which a whopping 81% of these federal funds are used for, but $1.96
billion of this money is applied specifically to the state SNAP program. I find it positive that the
government of Texas has been constantly allowing the SNAP program to be implemented (Texas State
Legislature). However, I do think it unfair for the Federal Government to strong arm them into
instituting the program by putting on the line,

Social Norms
This paper will give a definition of deviance by analyzing the varying types and definition of
deviance. Violations of social norms is key to defining deviance. There are three key features within
social norms: time, place, and situation, that come together to establish deviance. The relativity of the
all of those events combined into one along with who is perceiving the act is what defines deviance
Social Norm are informal rules that help govern a society. Norms differ from place, time period, and
situations. When norms are violated and witnessed the offender, the one who broke the norm, is then
put in to one of two punishment categories. Primary deviance is occurs when the offender breaks a

Criminal deviance is when a person becomes a deviant by disobeying the laws. Criminal deviance is
easy to define because even though laws change from time, place, and situation they are written down
and have already been agreed upon. Social deviance is much more difficult to define due to the
informal nature of social norms. A person can be either non deviant, a criminal deviant, a social
deviant, or bother a criminal and social deviant. Obey the speed limit can show all four these deviants.
On highways in America the left lane is referred to as the fast lane and the right hand lane as the slow
lane . A person going the maximum speed limit in the right hand lane is breaking neither laws nor
social norms. A person going ten miles an hour(mph) under the speed limit in the right lane, assuming
they are not slowing down to turn, is breaking the social norm of not going at least the speed limit, and
is therefore a social deviant. They are not breaking any laws, however. A person going five to ten mph
over the speed limit in the left hand lane is following the social norm. Since the person is going over
the speed limit they are now considered a criminal deviant. A person who is driving 50 mph regardless
of what lane they are is breaking both social norms and criminal laws, which makes them both a social

Enlightenment Influences on American Ideals Essay
By the late eighteenth century, the Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason as it was called had begun to
rapidly spread across Europe. People began believing in the ideals of popular government, the
centrality of economics to politics, secularism, and progress. This cultural movement was sparked by
intellectuals and commonwealth thinkers such as the influential writer John Locke and the famous
scientist Isaac Newton, both who emphasized the fact that man, by the use of reason, would be able to
solve all of his problems whether it be problems with the government, morals or the society. However,
these ideals weren t just limited to the European nations where they had first begun. On the other side

His philosophy inspired Americans to break away from the normal European institutions that they
were used to and lay a fresh foundation that would prove to be beneficial in the long run.
This fresh, new foundation came in the form a document that outlined the way the government would
work. Unlike the way Europe was governed before the Enlightenment period, Americans, since they
had recently liberated themselves from the British throne, wanted to establish a government in such a
way that would prevent tyrannical monarchy. By this time, they still were faced with the challenge of
a republican self government. But again, we see the influence of Locke s ideas from his Treatise,
where he proposed that people had the right to establish their own government for their own
protection of their natural rights. As a result of this idea, the preamble to the Constitution was created.
This section provided analysis as to what the whole Constitution was about; improvement on the
current government (to ensure that they are just) and protection for its citizens.
Around the same time, Americans were also influenced by the works of Charles, the Baron de
Montesquieu, a French political thinker. He believed that there were three types of governments; a
monarchy (ruled by a king or queen), a republic (ruled by an elected leader) and a despotism (ruled by
a dictator). In his book, The Spirit of Laws ,

The Progressive Era Of The 19th Century
Maya Stepansky
Mr. Meyer
Progressive Era DBQ
Toward the latter part of the 19th century, bustling America, in response to the trends of
industrialization and urbanization that characterized its Gilded Age, began its new century by entering
into a new historical/political epoch that came to be known as the Progressive Era. This distinctive
period in history (spanning from the 1890s through 1920) found progressives seeking to use the
American federal government as a means of change through social, political, and economic reforms.
Politically, the passage of the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments are evidence of the success of
progressive reformers, despite the fact that some of the new laws failed to create desired social
changes. The efforts of the progressives were mainly effective when it came to social reforms related
to worker s rights and child labor, but less productive in attaining improved civil rights for African
American citizens. In addition, the government was, to a large extent, successful in the establishment
of economic reforms to aid the working class, such as those enforced by Woodrow Wilson s Triple
Wall of Privilege ; however, President Roosevelt s famous anti trust efforts were ultimately not far
reaching enough at the time to eliminate all problematic corporate monopolies and related corruption.
During the Progressive Era, political reforms were effectively executed on the national level through
the passage of Constitutional amendments. Indeed

The future of living is cities. Somehow the ancients understood it, but Americans in the 1950s decided
cities were a thing of the past. The movement from the city to the suburb has been one of the single
most expensive cultural migrations in world history. There is much more than the initial cost of a
house with a yard. There are the environmental costs that accumulate from the destruction of wildlife
from both, building materials and the clearing of area for the physical house. This initial cost also does
not account for the supermarkets, and roads needed to sustain life in these suburban areas separated
into pods. What about the costs of a car needed for transportation in these metropolises, and all their
external costs as well? Those are not accounted for either, but suburban living was the American
Dream for nearly half a century. However, as the American Dream, and family models, change there is
an evident need for living conditions to change as well. There is not a singular way to design a city,

7 Characteristics Of Living Organisms
We examined cells from all four kingdoms of the Eukaryotes using a light microscope and found that
the cells make up all of these living organisms.
Introduction:
What are cells? Cells are the smallest living part of living organisms and are the building blocks of
life. Each individual cell has all of the nine properties of life. The first one is homeostasis, which is the
tendency of a system to maintain internal stability. For example, normal body temperature which is
98.5° and blood pH level should be around 7.2 at all times. The reason is primarily because of the
denaturing enzyme Pepsin, which breaks down protein in your stomach. The next characteristic is
living organisms respond to stimuli. Anything that causes a living organism to react is called a
stimulus, living organisms respond to their environment. For example, when it is hot, receptor nerves
in skin send a message to the hypothalamus which leads to the nerves which cause sweat and open the
pores as well as dilating the capillaries. Next living organisms need to grow. Everything needs to grow
in order to live, in the size of cells and/or number of cells. The fourth characteristic is reproduction.
Living organisms pass on DNA in order to reproduce. The next characteristic is metabolism.
Metabolism is all the chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of the cells and the
organism. The sixth characteristic is evolution, biological evolution is passing changes in DNA from a
parent to offspring

Hasidic Jews
Who are the Hasidic Jews, where are they from; and why did they migrate to the United States.
Hasidic Jews, sometimes known also as Hasidic Judaism, is a Jewish religious sec. It rose as a

fathers were able to create a nation with a government, out of people who were against any type of
political power (due to all previous corrupted rulers). There were also many people who were against
the idea of a band of national advocates. (Ellis 9). People divided and scattered came together as a

4. Evaluate some of the problems that plagued the United States making it difficult to build a nation?
In your opinion, which problem was most pressing? Explain. One problem was that no man had ever
created a republican government with a country as large as the US; so no higher authorities had faith
in the creation of this republican nation. Another apparent obstacle was that the legacy of the
Revolution and the Declaration of Independence contradicted with the establishment of governmental
authority. Furthermore, the Revolution encouraged people to rebel authority. Also, the states in the
new nation did not share a history in the past and did not come together (other than wars). Lastly, there
were many black peoples growing rapidly amongst racist whites. In my opinion, the contradiction
between the legacy of the Revolution and building a nation with an authority strikes as the most
pressing because the people the people as a whole become angry and stubborn when something they

Essay On Greenhouse Gas Emissions
As emitter in chief Donald Trump pulls out of the Paris Climate Accord, the time has come for a top
down approach to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Jack Close explains.
Environmentalists are quick to sing out about New Zealand s excessive greenhouse gas emissions and
rightly so. In the large part, we are a gas guzzling, river polluting, plastic bag wasting country. But the
rules of international trade means cutting back on production in our worst emitting industry probably
won t work, or at least not yet.
New Zealand is the world s largest dairy exporter, making up about 35 percent of international trade
and sells nearly half of the world s traded lamb. Agriculture accounts for 5.1 percent of our GDP, and
directly employs 7 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And we keep getting better at it in the last two decades, we ve reduced the amount of emissions per
unit of lamb, milk solids and beef by up to 33 percent.
If anyone should be producing dairy products, lamb, and beef, it should be us, right?
The NZ Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre uses the term leakage to describe what would
happen if we cut back on agriculture. If we reduce the amount of milk solids we export, for example,
people across the world will still want milk.
Instead, another country will seize the opportunity to fill the hole in the market, and feed the alley cat
that is global greenhouse gas emissions.
Not only will New Zealand be missing out on the revenue from those exports, but the countries that
attempt to capitalise on New Zealand s newfound environmental stewardship may not have anywhere
near the emission productivity that we do. Parts of Africa and South East Asia produce seven times
more methane per kilogram of edible protein than us.
In theory, we d be leaving the world in a worse environmental state than it was beforehand, and we d
be out of pocket.
Unless the whole world goes vegan, the demand for animal protein will only increase as exponential
population growth continues, with the United Nations expecting an extra 2.4 billion mouths to feed by
2050.

Creativity in Advertising
* CHAPTER 1. * ADVERTISING.
1.1 Origin of advertising
The origin of advertising does not lie in the modern industrial age, but it has its roots in the remote
past. Thousand of years ago most people were engaged in hunting, farming, or handicraft related
activities. They used to barter products among themselves. Distribution was limited to how far the
vendor could walk and distribute, advertising was limited to how loud they could shout. Perhaps the
earliest form of advertising was simply the trader shouting out the fact that he existed and naming
what he had to sell in the local market place.
As an instrument of marketing, advertising was an effective through multiple sales people reaching
many people at one time. Then it had used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Price charged should be reasonable. This is necessary for the support and co operation of consumers.
* Advertising and Place:
Place relates to physical distribution which is possible through various channels of distribution.
Advertiser has to decide whether to adopt direct or indirect channels of also useful for large scale
distribution. Advertising plays a crucial role to ensure smooth distribution of goods and keep the
consumers well informed.
* Advertising and Promotion:
Promotion is perhaps the most important element in the marketing mix. Companies introduce sales
promotion campaigns for capturing market. Price discounts and schemes like buy one, get one free are
also offered as sales promotion. Various sales promotion techniques are introduced at the consumer
and dealer levels. Window display, provision of after sales services and coordinal public relations also
facilitate sales promotion. Massive advertising is useful to support the sales promotion campaigns.
1.4 AIDA Formula in Advertising
The AIDA formula in advertising was suggested by E.K. Strong in his book the psychology of selling.
This formula suggests the steps in the process of advertising. The term AIDA is a short form derived
from the four words:
AATTENTION
I INTEREST
D DESIRE
AACTION
* A = Attracting Attention:
It involves attention element of an advertisement which catches the eye and attract attention. A person

Literary Analysis over One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Essay
LITERARY ANALYSIS One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey during a
time in our society when pressures of our modern world seemed at their greatest. Many people were,
at this time, deemed by society s standards to be insane and institutionalized. One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest is set in a ward of a mental institution. The major conflict in the novel is that of power.
Power is a recurring and overwhelming theme throughout the novel. Kesey shows the power of
women who are associated with the patients, the power Nurse Ratched has, and also the power
McMurphy fights to win. By default, he also shows how little power the patients have. When
discussing the theme of power in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s ... Show more content on

Laughter makes the patients feel good, and, specifically, Bromden feels good and begins to remember
other things that made him feel good (Tanner 4). McMurphy s power in laughter is intensified by
Nurse Ratched s lack of laughter. McMurphy s laughter and humor are genuine while Nurse Ratched s
humor is forced and smiles are chiseled like in plastic (Wallace 3, 5). Power enables McMurphy to
make changes on the ward and to survive in the institution. His sanity compared to the other patients,
his manipulations, and his ability to laugh give him the power. He, in turn, gives patients a sense of
power by teaching them to laugh at themselves, Nurse Ratched, and the world (Magill 1533). Second
in a discussion of power are the women associated with the patients. The supervisor at the hospital is
associated with the patients by controlling who is employed to take care of the patients. Nurse Ratched
and the supervisor served in the Army together as nurses. They are still very close and have a good
relationship. Because of this relationship, Nurse Ratched s employment is secured and others won t
stand up to her for fear of losing their own jobs. Harding states In this hospital, the doctor doesn t hold
the power of hiring and firing. That power goes to the supervisor and the supervisor is a woman, a
dear old friend of Miss Ratched s (61). The receptionist on the ward is Nurse Ratched s neighbor

  • 2. Wildfire Effects Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is a keystone species (Tomback et al. 2001), forming subalpine and treeline forests that supply food and shelter for hundreds of plant and animal species. This trait makes whitebark pine a quintessential high elevation conifer and it forms unique habitat types with both geographic and successional variation that support considerable biodiversity across the higher mountains of the United states and Canada. (Tomback et al. 2001, Tomback and Achuff 2010). Whitebark pine is a foundation species. The tree stands create a stable environment for other trees and plants by holding rocks and soil on slopes where other trees cannot survive (Arno and Hoff 1989). It provides shelter and a gentler microenvironment where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wildfire and prescribed burns have a variety of impacts on wildlife and habitats, both direct and indirect (Wasserman 2015). Direct effects include fatality, emigration out of burned areas, immigration into new areas. Indirect effects is changes in vegetative structure, diversity, species composition, and other components of their habitat. Species responses to wildfire depends on these direct and indirect effects of fire and how fire regimes and fire severity impacted the landscape (Fulé et al. 2003, Reynolds et al. 2013). Herbivores, such as elk, deer, and bighorn sheep, respond in post fire wilderness due to the open dense canopies that allow an increase in understory plants that herbivores feed on (Bailey and Whittam 2002). For example, elk prefer forage quality that provide their required calorie intake to allow them to successfully produce milk. During early succession, mid succession, and late succession of post fire habitat, forage quality is at its highest during early succession stages in both mesic and xeric sites (Swanson et al. 2011). This suggest that herbivores, like elk, would utilize these early succession post fire areas. Carnivores and mesocarnivores respond to post fire changes as well. Male american black bears and grizzly bears used burned sites increasing their home range post fire. Canids, such as the coyote, use both burned and unburned areas due to food availability (Cunningham et al 2002). The Mount Washburn sites are in landscapes that experienced high severity fires and have an abundance of whitebark pine deadfall in the area. This overabundance of deadfall might detter larger herbivores and carnivores decreasing wildlife species diversity. Wildlife species diversity is an intuitive way to determine an ecosystem s health and status (Edwards and Abivardi 1998). Wildlife species diversity boosts ecosystem productivity due to diversification ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Strandbeests also known as beach animals are made of PVC pipes that gives the animal the ability to stand. They work in multiple places such as soft places and places with sand. The difference is that in soft places they need a special drive system that use pressed to move the Strandbeest and in places with sand they use the wind to give them motion to work. As Jansen states in his interview, And so over the years, the generations became better and better at surviving the storms and the sand and the water on the beach and that connect the Strandbeests as a product of development in nature, getting different kinds of adaptation as human does and showing aspects related to human reproduction, Through the beests, Jansen connects beest s reproduction with human reproduction, therefore nature. ... It´s not the personal kind of love, it s the love for mathematics or love for mechanics (Riley). A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller A view from the bridge by Arthur Miller is a tragic intense play about family struggle, lust, passion and deceit. My aim is too look at the relationship of Catherine and Eddie. To understand the relationship, we must understand the atmosphere and culture. To do this we need to know why Miller wrote the play, background history and why this is significant to understanding the relationship between Catherine and Eddie. John Fitzgerald Kennedy wrote this quote to the UN General Assembly on September 25, 1961. In other words Kennedy is saying that people should stop war because war tears people apart. In the writings The Sniper by Liam O Flaherty and The Man he Killed by Thomas Hardy they also talk about how war tears people apart. These two writings are both very similar although they have some differences in literary devices plot, irony, and theme. In these two works there are similarities and differences in plot. For example, a doctor who specializes in the heart, a cardiologist, knows a whole lot about a small aspect of the greater whole, the human body. By studying the heart in isolation, with no connection to the rest of the body or its organs, some of the hearts meaning is lost. Just saying that the heart pumps blood is meaningless to the layperson ignorant of biology. The questions of why the heart pumps blood, what is blood, and how does the heart interact with other organs still remain. Not to mention more specific questions such as how other organs, such as teeth, which an orthodontist would be more likely to know, are effected by and affect the heart. A movement within psychology, known as Gestalt psychology, summed this holistic ideology up nicely with its tenet The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It follows from this argument that if a piece of art is broken down into its component parts to be analyzed and interpreted, the form or structure of the artwork is ignored. By focusing one s attention on specific and possibly trivial aspects of the piece of art s content, the piece s overall structure is not considered. Modern vs. Classical Music Though the delight of listening to a brand new track on a compact disc with a big name artist has a similar emotional feel for modern day people, as it would have felt for people listening to a live symphony during the Classical era, the ability the artists, and those involved with them, have with the increase of new technology and business schemes has allowed their base of listeners to be on a global scale for millions, if not yet billions. In terms of the artist in the modern music scene, the skill and dedication required is equally demanding if not more so to rise to the top in this competitive industry, though the reward is far greater in terms of fame, wealth and social status; all of which Mozart strived for but never was able to attain despite being perhaps one of the greatest musical talents the world has seen yet. Also with the expansion of audiences, infusions of genres and capabilities with technology, modern society has seen a trend in corporations fabricating bands, composing music for artists that fit with the cultural fads and electronically perfecting acoustics, all of which are ways for these companies to make quick profit. The downfall in this is the loss of appreciation of music by these corporations and eventually listeners, in terms of the emotion, talent and sacrifice that it takes away from the real musicians trying to make a name for themselves and their careers, such as Schubert ... Even when the September rain falls and in the failing light , the house is still a secure and warm place. But where is this sense of comfort in Sestina? It appears that even though both the grandmother and the child are in the chilly house, they are far apart from each other. She busies herself and tries to hide her emotions while it draws in the other end of the kitchen. The grandmother s actions create a sense of secrecy and hint that she hides something. However, the reader does not know why. Bishop keeps this sense of secrecy by revealing the grief but not the reason behind it. She uses visual imagery to establish a simple, falsely harmonic domestic scene. The tension in the house is hidden behind the silence in it. Bishop personifies the objects in the house to break it. Furthermore, the words of the objects might clarify what is the reason for the grandmother s mood: It was to be. Says the Marvel Stove. I know what I know, says the almanac. Apparently, something predetermined has happened which relates to the theme of change, discussed in the previous section. This theme is closely related to the role of the almanac. Its function is to predict the weather for the next year. Additionally, its importance in the poem shows the role of the weather in the grandmother s life. The hanging almanac is associated with a bird using the simile birdlike . The anaphora hovers suggests that it has control over the child and the grandmother. • 12. Nature Emerson Analysis In Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson, there are many ideas that Emerson explored during the passage. One is the view we have on the stars. Emerson feels like we do not value the stars as we should. We would view them in a whole new way if they were only present every a thousand years. We would have a different opinion of them, and would watch out for them when we knew they would come out. Another idea that Emerson focuses on in the excerpt is if an individual does have a bad attitude, they look at nature in a bad way. If they have a good attitude, they look at it in a positive way. One other idea that Emerson pursues is the idea of the transparent eyeball. We are following the over soul, we are apart of the spirit. we can see everything, but not everything can see us. The industrial revolution has been the central cause for the increase in pollutants in the atmosphere over the last three centuries. Before 1950, the majority of this pollution was created from the burning of coal for energy generation, space heating, cooking, and transportation. Under the right conditions, the smoke and sulfur dioxide produced from the burning of coal can combine with fog to create industrial smog. In high concentrations, industrial smog can be extremely toxic to humans and other living organisms. London is world famous for its episodes of industrial smog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These conditions include : • Precipitation can alleviate photochemical smog as the pollutants are washed out of the atmosphere with the rainfall. • Winds can blow photochemical smog away replacing it with fresh air. However, problems may arise in distant areas that receive the pollution. • Temperature inversions can enhance the severity of a photochemical smog episode. Normally, during the day the air near the surface is heated and as it warms it rises, carrying the pollutants with it to higher elevations. However, if a temperature inversion develops pollutants can be trapped near the Earth s surface. Temperature inversions cause the reduction of atmospheric mixing and therefore reduce the vertical dispersion of pollutants. Inversions can last from a few days to several weeks. 4. Topography is another important factor influencing how severe a smog event can become. Communities situated in valleys are more susceptible to photochemical smog because hills and mountains surrounding them tend to reduce the air flow, allowing for pollutant concentrations to rise. In addition, valleys are sensitive to photochemical smog because relatively strong temperature inversions can frequently develop in these areas. Possible Solutions A possible solution to the problem of photochemical smog is to enforce stricter emission laws all over the globe. Many countries have varying laws on the legal limits of NOx, Carbon Dioxide, and Sulfur Dioxide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Aristotle And Jean Jacques Rousseau And Rousseau On The... People such as Buddhist monks devote their lives to the search for virtue through isolation and meditation. Others believe that just simply living your life as a generous person and practicing self preservation is virtuous. These two different, yet similar ideas of virtuous living came from the two philosophers known as Aristotle and Jean Jacques Rousseau and their works in the Nicomachean Ethics and Discourse on The Origin of Inequality. Aristotle believed that the individual had to meet multiple qualifications in order to truly be virtuous; rather than Rousseau who thought a virtuous person simply needed to preserve their own life and have the virtue pity, or defined by him as your natural impulses. While they both disagree on whether impulse or habit is the key to becoming virtuous or even what virtue is, they agree that we pursue the virtuous life in order to avoid pain. Jean Jacques Rousseau in The Origin of Inequality talks briefly about a savage man in the state of nature and what makes him virtuous. Rousseau said, Qualities that can harm an individual s preservation vices in him and those than can contribute to its virtues. In that case it would be necessary to call the one who least resists the simple impulses of nature the most virtuous, (35). Chords play a very prominent role in how we portray the emotion of a song. The message that a composer has when he writes an instrumental composition plays a vital role in the spiritual aspects of a song. If the intent is to write a song that contains a spirit of witchcraft and wickedness, then that song will carry out that spiritual force that has been placed upon it since the birth of the song. If the intent of the composer is to create a song about evil, then God s anointing is not likely to be found on that song. The piece is based on the legend of Don Juan, an illusory libertine and seducer of women (Kerns, 2010). At first, Mozart s opera seems more like a story of the romantic adventures of a dissolute nobleman and his disgrace. However, there is much more to Don Giovanni than just a series of events and serious laughs, just as the protagonist is much more than a notorious, single minded, and unprincipled seducer. Closer examination of the piece reveals its core themes of social classes and divisions as depicted by Leporello s complaints about his servitude to his employer in the first scene (Mozart, Fisher, Ponte, 2007). The play also touches on vital human traits and principles, including loyalty, faithfulness, and sincerity. More importantly, Don Giovanni centers on the ambiguity intrinsic to human relations, the intricate connection between life and death, and the interminable tension between love and the risk of its extermination. Don Giovanni can be characterized as a comic opera due to its indulgence with tragic themes, such as crime and murder, in an astoundingly funny manner. • 28. Enlightenment Influences on American Ideals Essay By the late eighteenth century, the Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason as it was called had begun to rapidly spread across Europe. People began believing in the ideals of popular government, the centrality of economics to politics, secularism, and progress. This cultural movement was sparked by intellectuals and commonwealth thinkers such as the influential writer John Locke and the famous scientist Isaac Newton, both who emphasized the fact that man, by the use of reason, would be able to solve all of his problems whether it be problems with the government, morals or the society. However, these ideals weren t just limited to the European nations where they had first begun. On the other side of the world, off in the United States, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His philosophy inspired Americans to break away from the normal European institutions that they were used to and lay a fresh foundation that would prove to be beneficial in the long run. This fresh, new foundation came in the form a document that outlined the way the government would work. Unlike the way Europe was governed before the Enlightenment period, Americans, since they had recently liberated themselves from the British throne, wanted to establish a government in such a way that would prevent tyrannical monarchy. By this time, they still were faced with the challenge of a republican self government. But again, we see the influence of Locke s ideas from his Treatise, where he proposed that people had the right to establish their own government for their own protection of their natural rights. As a result of this idea, the preamble to the Constitution was created. This section provided analysis as to what the whole Constitution was about; improvement on the current government (to ensure that they are just) and protection for its citizens. Around the same time, Americans were also influenced by the works of Charles, the Baron de Montesquieu, a French political thinker. He believed that there were three types of governments; a monarchy (ruled by a king or queen), a republic (ruled by an elected leader) and a despotism (ruled by a dictator). In his book, The Spirit of Laws , ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Progressive Era Of The 19th Century Maya Stepansky Mr. Meyer Progressive Era DBQ Toward the latter part of the 19th century, bustling America, in response to the trends of industrialization and urbanization that characterized its Gilded Age, began its new century by entering into a new historical/political epoch that came to be known as the Progressive Era. This distinctive period in history (spanning from the 1890s through 1920) found progressives seeking to use the American federal government as a means of change through social, political, and economic reforms. Politically, the passage of the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments are evidence of the success of progressive reformers, despite the fact that some of the new laws failed to create desired social changes. The efforts of the progressives were mainly effective when it came to social reforms related to worker s rights and child labor, but less productive in attaining improved civil rights for African American citizens. In addition, the government was, to a large extent, successful in the establishment of economic reforms to aid the working class, such as those enforced by Woodrow Wilson s Triple Wall of Privilege ; however, President Roosevelt s famous anti trust efforts were ultimately not far reaching enough at the time to eliminate all problematic corporate monopolies and related corruption. During the Progressive Era, political reforms were effectively executed on the national level through the passage of Constitutional amendments. Indeed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By looking at the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area there is a need to accommodate for future cities by employing community and regional design concepts. Content The future of living is cities. Somehow the ancients understood it, but Americans in the 1950s decided cities were a thing of the past. The movement from the city to the suburb has been one of the single most expensive cultural migrations in world history. There is much more than the initial cost of a house with a yard. There are the environmental costs that accumulate from the destruction of wildlife from both, building materials and the clearing of area for the physical house. This initial cost also does not account for the supermarkets, and roads needed to sustain life in these suburban areas separated into pods. What about the costs of a car needed for transportation in these metropolises, and all their external costs as well? Those are not accounted for either, but suburban living was the American Dream for nearly half a century. However, as the American Dream, and family models, change there is an evident need for living conditions to change as well. There is not a singular way to design a city, but ... • 35. 7 Characteristics Of Living Organisms We examined cells from all four kingdoms of the Eukaryotes using a light microscope and found that the cells make up all of these living organisms. Introduction: What are cells? Cells are the smallest living part of living organisms and are the building blocks of life. Each individual cell has all of the nine properties of life. The first one is homeostasis, which is the tendency of a system to maintain internal stability. For example, normal body temperature which is 98.5° and blood pH level should be around 7.2 at all times. The reason is primarily because of the denaturing enzyme Pepsin, which breaks down protein in your stomach. The next characteristic is living organisms respond to stimuli. Anything that causes a living organism to react is called a stimulus, living organisms respond to their environment. For example, when it is hot, receptor nerves in skin send a message to the hypothalamus which leads to the nerves which cause sweat and open the pores as well as dilating the capillaries. Next living organisms need to grow. Everything needs to grow in order to live, in the size of cells and/or number of cells. The fourth characteristic is reproduction. Living organisms pass on DNA in order to reproduce. The next characteristic is metabolism. Metabolism is all the chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of the cells and the organism. The sixth characteristic is evolution, biological evolution is passing changes in DNA from a parent to offspring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Ellis s preface, explain what is so phenomenal about the founding of the United States? One reason why the founding of the US is so phenomenal is because the founding fathers were able to create a nation with a government, out of people who were against any type of political power (due to all previous corrupted rulers). There were also many people who were against the idea of a band of national advocates. (Ellis 9). People divided and scattered came together as a nation which is a miracle in itself. 2. Evaluate some of the problems that plagued the United States making it difficult to build a nation? In your opinion, which problem was most pressing? Explain. One problem was that no man had ever created a republican government with a country as large as the US; so no higher authorities had faith in the creation of this republican nation. Another apparent obstacle was that the legacy of the Revolution and the Declaration of Independence contradicted with the establishment of governmental authority. Furthermore, the Revolution encouraged people to rebel authority. Also, the states in the new nation did not share a history in the past and did not come together (other than wars). Lastly, there were many black peoples growing rapidly amongst racist whites. In my opinion, the contradiction between the legacy of the Revolution and building a nation with an authority strikes as the most pressing because the people the people as a whole become angry and stubborn when something they have fought/are fighting for is crushed. Essay On Greenhouse Gas Emissions As emitter in chief Donald Trump pulls out of the Paris Climate Accord, the time has come for a top down approach to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Jack Close explains. Environmentalists are quick to sing out about New Zealand s excessive greenhouse gas emissions and rightly so. In the large part, we are a gas guzzling, river polluting, plastic bag wasting country. But the rules of international trade means cutting back on production in our worst emitting industry probably won t work, or at least not yet. And we keep getting better at it in the last two decades, we ve reduced the amount of emissions per unit of lamb, milk solids and beef by up to 33 percent. If anyone should be producing dairy products, lamb, and beef, it should be us, right? The NZ Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre uses the term leakage to describe what would happen if we cut back on agriculture. If we reduce the amount of milk solids we export, for example, people across the world will still want milk. Instead, another country will seize the opportunity to fill the hole in the market, and feed the alley cat that is global greenhouse gas emissions. Not only will New Zealand be missing out on the revenue from those exports, but the countries that attempt to capitalise on New Zealand s newfound environmental stewardship may not have anywhere near the emission productivity that we do. Parts of Africa and South East Asia produce seven times more methane per kilogram of edible protein than us. In theory, we d be leaving the world in a worse environmental state than it was beforehand, and we d be out of pocket. Unless the whole world goes vegan, the demand for animal protein will only increase as exponential population growth continues, with the United Nations expecting an extra 2.4 billion mouths to feed by 2050. No country wants to lose out if they over commit to reducing climate change. There s a very good reason the Government conveniently left off

Many people were, at this time, deemed by society s standards to be insane and institutionalized. One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is set in a ward of a mental institution. The major conflict in the novel is that of power. Power is a recurring and overwhelming theme throughout the novel. McMurphy s power in laughter is intensified by Nurse Ratched s lack of laughter. Power enables McMurphy to make changes on the ward and to survive in the institution. His sanity compared to the other patients, his manipulations, and his ability to laugh give him the power. He, in turn, gives patients a sense of power by teaching them to laugh at themselves, Nurse Ratched, and the world (Magill 1533). Second in a discussion of power are the women associated with the patients. The supervisor at the hospital is associated with the patients by controlling who is employed to take care of the patients.
