Teens on the Net
What is Netiquette?

• a term created to describe proper
  etiquette on the Internet
• a system of rules and conventions
  for social and professional behavior
• these rules are basically the do's
  and don’ts of online
  communication.
What is Netiquette?

• it is network etiquette -- that is, the
  etiquette of cyberspace
• "etiquette" means "the forms
  required by good breeding or
prescribed by authority to be required
  in social or official life."
• is a set of rules for behaving properly
  online
What is the Importance of
       Netiquette?
Rule # 1

Remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others
as you'd have others do unto you.

- whatever you post or say online can be read
by other human being like you. You are not
communicating and socializing with robots -
Rule # 2

THINK: Think, Think again, and Think one
more time. Think as many times as you can
BEFORE you type or post anything.

  - Ask yourself: "Would I say that to their
face?" or "Would I say that in front of my
                  parents?" -
Rule # 3

If something upsets you, wait at least 24
        hours before responding.

- We can no longer take back our words once
we posted it. Anger can really fuel the bad
side of us. They say you can count to 10
before responding or count to 100 if you are
                 really mad -
Rule # 4

Choose your words very, very carefully.

- Words can be easily misinterpreted. It can
be taken as offensive even though you did
not really mean to. People who are reading
   your statements might have different
meanings aside from what you really want
                 to convey -
Rule # 5

          Respect begets Respect.

- Respect does not initially come from others
but from our self. Self-respect is a key in
showing that we are capable of respecting
and we deserve to be respected -
Rule # 6

          Be an Educated Netizen.

     - participating in online forums and
discussions (usually non-formal ones) is not
an excuse to use proper spelling, grammar
and other things that we learn even in
elementary English and out native language -
Rule # 6
Top 3 things you need to
            remember:
• Check your spelling.
• Use the correct grammar.
• Use the proper case.
Rule # 7

Be yourself and join the cyber world with the
values you have in real life.

 - Let us always remember that we say and do
are reflection of our values in life. Whether in
the cyber or real world, we have to remember
to always choose what is both good and right
based on the principles that we believe in -
Activity 1

You will be given a piece of paper that has two columns: “Un-
nethical” and “What Should Be Done”. Write any violation of
the netiquette rules that you have committed (if
none, someone else’s that you might have observed) on the
“Un-nethical” column. On the other column, write what you
promise to do about it (or how the misbehavior should be
changed). You will be given 3 minutes to write. After
writing, some of you will be asked to share what you have
                            written.
What is
   Cyberbullying?

• Online harassment, more often called cyberbullying, is
  a serious problem.
• Cyberbullying is any harassment that occurs via the
  Internet.
• Vicious forum posts, name calling in chat
rooms, posting fake profiles on web sites, and mean or
cruel email messages are all ways of cyberbullying.
Example of Cyberbullying
       Thru email:
Example of Cyberbullying
      Thru cellphones:
Example of Cyberbullying
  Thru social networking sites:
Why do people
                        cyberbully?

• Revenge
• Resentment
• To Exert Authority
• Boredom
• Anger
• Frustration
• By accident or non-malicious intent
Effects of
    Cyberbullying
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Low self-esteem or lack of confidence
• Poor performance at school
• Loneliness & unhappiness
• Lack of sleep and other stress-related disorders
• In some rare but highly publicized cases, some
    kids have turned to suicide.
What can we do to prevent it?

          1) Never respond to bullying
          and harassing comments.

          This takes away power from
          the cyberbully.
What can we do to prevent it?
          2) Show consideration to
          others online.

          Respect others’ feelings and
          be polite when
          communicating with others.
What can we do to prevent it?
          3) Change passwords
          frequently and set privacy
          settings.

          This will make your online
          accounts and profile more
          secure.
What can we do to prevent it?
            4) Value your privacy.

Do not just give out any
            personal information to
            someone whom you do not
            know personally or someone
            you do not trust.
What can we do to prevent it?
             5) Be cautious with
             photos that you post or
             send.

             Pictures can come back to
haunt you or can be used
             to track your location.
What can we do to prevent it?
             6) Never pass along messages
that have to do with cyber
             bullying.

             It’s best to delete cyber
             bullying messages about
someone else and to stop it in
its tracks! It is wrong, do not
participate and be part of it.
What can we do to prevent it?
             7) Never be afraid to tell.

             Inform your guardian
             about what is happening.
             Whether you are being
             cyberbullied or a friend of
             yours.
Activity 2

You will be grouped into 5 and will be given
5-10 minutes to come up with your own
advocacy skit against cyberbullying. You will
then be asked to present in front of the class.
Thank
 You!
