This document explores using virtual environments to teach social skills to students with autism spectrum disorders. It discusses research showing that communication technologies can benefit those with ASD by allowing more time to respond and reducing social pressures. Studies found no differences in online conversations between those with and without ASD. Research also suggests virtual worlds may allow practicing social skills in a safe environment. The document concludes that instant messaging and virtual worlds warrant further investigation for teaching and reinforcing social skills to students with ASD.
