Cyberbullying Mitigation Plan Research

DPSY 5111-6111 Week 3: Final Project: Mitigation Plan, Part 1
Cyberbullying and Action Research
When human behaviors include sending mean-spirited communication like spreading
false rumors via wireless or digital technology (e.g., cellphones, computers, and social-network-
sites), the act defines “cyberbullying” (Ng Chong, Kanagasundram, Yee Hway, Tan Loong, &
Teoh Kar, 2016). On the other hand, unlike theory-driven research guided by experts, educators
or other qualified professionals conduct action research (Creswell, 2012; Mills, 2014). The
primary aim of theory-driven research is to identify cause and effect relationships; whereas the
goal of action research is to address specific problems in their natural environments and
recommend practical solutions (Lodico, Spaulding, & Voegtle, 2010; Mills, 2014).
Mitigation Plan: Define the Problem the Purpose, and the Benefits
Most public and private education communities rely, mostly, on the Internet and the
Worldwide Web to facilitate and improve teaching and learning practices (Creswell, 2012;
Lodico, Spaulding, & Voegtle, 2010; Mills, 2014; Prieger, 2013). However, Tomczyk and
Kopecký (2016) noted that most children begin using wireless and digital technology at 7 years
of age or less even-though they usually lack cyberbullying and anti-bullying knowledge. Studies
suggest cyberbullying has negative effects on children’s physical and psychological well-being;
in that, it lowers their academic performances, causes mental duress, and disrupts sleep-patterns
(Ng Chong et al., 2016). This problem makes parents’ duty to protect their children much
harder. Although efforts to find comprehensive solutions to cyberbullying is ongoing (Holfeld,
& Leadbeater, 2015; Jang-Jaccard, & Nepal, 2014; Tomczyk, & Kopecký ,2016), action research
is an effective strategy to address specific phenomena in natural settings and it aligns with
diversity factors such as age and gender, (Lodico, Spaulding, & Voegtle, 2010; Mills, 2014).
