Canadian academic libraries are experimenting with providing chat reference services in virtual environments like Second Life. McMaster University Library piloted a virtual reference service on Second Life to explore its potential, requirements, and need. The pilot found that avatars may facilitate reference interactions by adding visual cues to digital chat and allowing for anonymity. While virtual reference services require technical and staff resources, they provide access to help at the point of need and prepare libraries for an increasingly online future with more users having avatars. Overall, libraries must find creative ways to support users' information and knowledge needs in virtual environments.
