Online Learning Networks & School Based Leadership
This document summarizes the findings of a teacher-librarian's inquiry project exploring the development of personal online learning networks. The teacher-librarian began by building their own network in order to better understand the tools and process. They then introduced network concepts to colleagues through surveys and collaboration tools. While most colleagues were interested, few began actively building networks initially. The teacher-librarian concluded that ongoing modeling and support is needed for colleagues to fully develop online networks, but that the project started important conversations and early adoption for some. Their next steps involve continuing to expand network use and keeping dialogue open with colleagues.

Hillcrest High School 21st Century Project Student Products
Hillcrest High School implemented various web 2.0 tools into their classrooms as part of a 21st century project. Teachers and students used blogs, wikis, Flickr, and ThinkFree to complete projects. Classes used TappedIn, which provided discussion boards, online chats, and a place for students to collaborate on group projects. Students created political campaign websites on Wikispaces for a government class election simulation. The use of new technologies benefited both teachers and students by encouraging extended discussion and collaborative work.

Seeking Empirical Validity in an Assurance of Learning System
Business schools have established measurement tools to support their AoL systems and assess student achievement of learning objectives. However, business schools have not required their tools be empirically validated thus ensuring that they measure what they are intended to measure. We propose confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) be utilized by business schools to evaluate AoL measurement systems. We illustrate a CFA model used to evaluate the measurement tools at our College. Our approach is in initial steps currently evaluating individual measurement tools, but working towards developing a system that can evaluate the entire AoL measurement systems.

An Initial Conceptualization of Virtual Scenario Planning
Recent disruptive events introduced high volatility and uncertainty into the contemporary organizational environment whereby well-established organizations found scenario planning useful to craft strategy. However, because scenario planning is typically a very costly endeavor, it is less accessible to new startups, small businesses, non-profits, and large-scale organizations that could greatly benefit. We propose an initial conceptual model whereby sophisticated technologies that typically enable virtual events be utilized to facilitate virtual scenario planning activities for real-time participation from geographically disbursed locations reducing expenses and providing access to one of HRD’s strategic learning tools. This article will be of particular interest to those involved in formulating organizational strategy including those where costs of face-to-face scenario planning and other forms of strategic initiatives are either time or cost prohibitive. This paper reports results of a mixed methods study on the use of the visual social media platform Pinterest in the higher education classroom. Research methods included data collection of Pre-Experience and Post-Experience student surveys from two disciplines, Education and Business, regarding students’ experiences using Pinterest for learning. A total of 227 students (189 undergraduate and 38 graduate students) participated in the study. Findings included student attitudes regarding the usability of Pinterest in the classroom setting, student learning and development, and ways Pinterest facilitated the development of a virtual community of practice. Service-Learning (SL) as an instructional method is growing in popularity for giving back to the community while connecting the experience to course content. However, little has been published on using SL for online business students. This study highlights an exploratory mixed-methods, multiple case study of an online business leadership and ethics course utilizing SL as a pedagogical teaching tool with 81 students. Results from the study noted that hours completed exceeded those assigned and students identified outcomes for themselves, their university, and nonprofit organizations where they served. The outcomes of this study mirrored those identified by students in traditional face-to-face courses underscoring the value of SL projects in online courses in higher education.

Scenario Planning as the Development of Leadership
1) The document discusses the relationship between scenario planning and leadership development, hypothesizing that the components of scenario planning are also components of leadership development and that leadership development is an outcome of scenario planning.
2) Evidence from literature and expert interviews is presented to support the hypotheses. Interviews were conducted with two scenario planning experts and analyzed using three theoretical frameworks.
3) The findings suggest scenario planning can be used as a tool to develop strategic leadership capacity and that leadership is an important part of both the scenario planning process and outcomes. More research is needed to further establish the nature of the relationship.

- 1. Virtual HRD: Utilizing Pinterest as Informal Learning Tool By Rochell R. McWhorter HRD scholars and practitioners are bombarded with the challenge to stay relevant in an ever-changing workplace. One way to keep current is by frequently perusing web content for new and interesting ideas, including news articles, blogs, and social media. A new method to easily save and share useful web content is by “pinning” it on the social network, Pinterest. Pinterest (pinterest.com) launched in 2010 and was recently ranked third most used social media behind Facebook and Twitter (Knapp, 2012). Originally dominated for home use, such as saving recipes and home décor tips, its utility now extends to professional use because of the ease of saving and sharing web-linked images. Essentially, Pinterest is a social bookmarking tool where users have a main “board” where they can either use pre-made categories (“pinboards”) or customize categories for their “pins”. A pin is a digital object such as image or video either from a website or uploaded by the user. Like other social networks, users can collaborate by following other users, share content, tag objects, and make comments. Instructors might consider utilizing Pinterest as an informal learning tool that can also create community in online courses (Delello, 2012). For example, students could be asked to locate course-related content or current news events on the web and then “pin” links to a class-wide pinboard thus increasing informal
