How do we know when our students are learning?Assessment of student learning is necessary to determine students’ strengths and weaknesses so that we can determine if students have learned the objectives and developed their skills. During the next year we will be providing faculty with resources to help them develop meaningful formative assessments to enhance their instruction. Faculty will be expected to include a formative assessment within each course and syllabus. Formative assessments help faculty determine how to modify their instruction from week to week to meet students’ needs. It is an assessment for learning. In contrast, summative assessments, such as course finals, are an assessment of learning. While both assessment approaches are necessary, our focus this year is to increase the use of formative assessments in our classes to improve learning. Fook & Sidhu (2010) succinctly captures the importance of assessment: “Many learning institutes have forgotten the ultimate purpose of the assessment actually is not only to prove but also to improve students’ learning” (p. 154). - 2. I looked forward to working with the students when I considered my service learning assignment at the UCP inclusion school.
- 3. The The School is located in a small shopping Plaza on 17-92 in Lake Mary
- 4. The teacher in the classroom left for a position in a middle school and Miss Caci had to step in and run the classroom until a new teacher could be found. These two ladies were assistants in the classroom where I did my service learning.
- 5. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my grandchildren and my husband. I also enjoy long walks with my dogs. I have always worked with children and taught preschool before attending UCF. I really have no preference as to what age I work with, I just enjoy children.
- 6. I had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of experiences with the children during service learning On my last day we carved and cleaned the seeds out of pumpkins to dry and put in a book. We had an apple orchard day and made apple juice, applesauce, apple prints and sampled different types of apples.
- 7. I used Board Maker to create pics for one of the students. Smart board was a recent addition to the classroom and the children really enjoyed it.

The students in the class were Pre-K and kindergarteners A variety of ethnicities was represented in the class such as African American, White, Middle Eastern and Hispanic There was also a variety of exceptionalities such as students with Down Syndrome, sensory disorders and cerebral palsy There were twelve students in the class
- 9. This was my very first experience at a UCP inclusion school. I wish that I had been able to spend more time there after completing my service hours, but my school and work schedule would not allow it. I was most impressed with how the school fostered independence. They encouraged each child to do the most for himself or herself possible. Assistance was provided when it was needed, but only when needed, not when a student could do it for himself.
- 10. What I enjoyed most was center time since I was able to work one on one with the children and really get to know them. Because of the age and variety of disabilities the teachers in the room really had to work at differentiating instruction to meet the individual needs of each student This really impacted me and the impact on the students was evident. I saw the importance of differentiating instruction as I watched the teachers and students interact. Another thing that impressed me was the positive aspect of the classroom.
- 11. Students struggles were not treated as inconveniences, but as teachable moments. I watched these teachers seize opportunities to teach when others would have viewed the situation as an aggravation. In my future endeavors as a teacher I will definitely differentiate instruction since I have seen the benefits and will look for teachable moments in what might appear to be challenging situations.
