2. Home of the Stallions!
My service learning experience was an awesome and
great experience. I completed my service learning
hours at a charter school named Somerset Academy
Charter. Somerset is a K-12 school that shows great
interest in their students’ work and achievements. It
has been an A school since it first opened a few years
ago. All the administration and staff show
consideration and true love for working with students.
The students were great and showed they really
enjoyed having me there to assist them and their
teacher.

3.  My cooperating teacher was Jennifer Alam
who teaches second grade and has been
teaching for 5 years now. On my first day
she introduced me to all her students and
staff. She was super nice and helpful and
made me feel extremely comfortable being
there to assist her. Ms. Alam was a great
instructor to the students and really helped
me gain knowledge on what its like to be a
teacher. In the classroom there was a wide
range of about 23 students from different
race, cultures, and genders.

 Using construction paper for making learning fun
and enjoyable.
 Different worksheets to help with all the lessons
the teacher is teaching.

5. My Experience
 At first I didn’t think I would enjoy working with younger
children, but after working with this second graders I wouldn’t
mind teaching students of that age. The students were
enthusiastic and excited about learning. Like every
classroom, there was that one or two students who would
give the teacher a hard time but Ms. Alam did a great job in
putting them back on task. Teaching children of that age can
be difficult but at times easy. They become so curious that
they are willing to learn, but can become so easily distracted.
At this age you have to teach students with creativity because
they are attracted to things with color and things that catch
their eye. Ms. Alam did exactly that and brought out
construction paper, scissors, and glue has much as she can
to make the assignments more interesting and fun for the
students. I loved being apart of their learning environment.

6. To Conclude
 I had a great experience assisting Ms. Alam and her
second grade class in Somerset Academy Charter.
This experience helped me realize that teaching
younger students isn’t as bad as I thought. I had
the opportunity of working with an awesome
teacher who I still talk to for advise on teaching.
She is a great mentor and teacher who loves her
students and finds ways to make learning fun for
her students.
