REFLECTION ON MY EXPERIENCE AS A COMMERCE TEACHER
DURING INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
“Teaching is a profession that creates all other professions.”
As part of our B.Ed. curriculum we have to do 3 and half month of internship in school
as a commerce teacher. So I chooseSt. Aloysius H.S.S Athirampuzha for my internship.
This school is located in Athirampuzha and it is managed by Athirampuzha church.
This school was a good school and all teachers, especially Principal Mr. James Antony
sir gave me kind support and love. They are always friendly with me and considered
me as one of them. They treat me as like experienced teacher.
I was sent to plus one C commerce class as a Business studies teacher. The class holds
59 students at the beginning. Initially when entered in the class room I was tensed,
because all are watching me and expecting more things than others. The pupils were
excited and their face like a meeting a stranger. I introduced myself and I didn’t took any
subject on that day. Just I want to familiar with everyone. It’s hard to learn everyone’s
name.
My internship provided a perfect platform to apply all those theories and work with
young and curious minds. The classroom became my laboratory and my learners were
my projects! Each one so special, so different, and yet all were divergent thinkers! A
perfect blend of uniqueness with universality.
I was alone in that school as a B.Ed. trainee. My peers were in high school. So I got
library room for sit and do my own works.
During my student teaching experience, I spent a lot of time preparing each lesson plan.
I worked hard to research different ways to present the information for each lesson. I
looked for activities that my students would enjoy, and I made sure that I had all of the
materials and other things that I needed before class started. Even then, there were
always things that would go wrong. Technology would fail. Students would complete
activities quicker than planned. Or students would require much more time and
explanation than expected.
I took business studies as my subject. It is theory oriented. I felt that my explanations
on a topic which I covered in the class room is very less. I often switch next topic
immediately. I think it is because of that lack of deep subject knowledge. So I started to
know more about particular topics. Students needs more examples which is related to
daily life. I feel it is very difficult to me to identify more examples from a topic.
Class management is an integral part of teaching. I felt difficulty in class management.
It’s hard to me. Sometimes I couldn’t make silence in the class room and couldn’t made
them attentive. It is the big problem which I faced at the beginning of my internship.
But I could manage it smoothly later. This internship programme helped me to learn
how manage a class room with discipline and attentive.
Parent teacher meeting was another thing I faced and it was an unforgettable experience.
Each student’s parent met me and asked about them. I feel that I couldn’t handle such
a situation. But I smoothly manage it. The main thing I noticed that in their eyes I am a
teacher. They treatedme as a teacher like other experienced teacher. But I am still seeing
me as a student teacher. Not a real one.
One of the biggest challenges faced that a teacher should know each student personally,
because they express their frustrations, boredom, lack of interest, misbehaviour,
indiscipline, etc. in the class room itself. So teacher should identify what is the real
problem of that behaviour. As part of my B.Ed. curriculum I have to conduct a case
study. It helped me to know students personally.
Last week of internship came. My lessons were almost delivered, the case study was
done, achievement and diagnostic tests were conducted, and peers were observed. But
I felt that I am not interested to come back college. The love, support and consideration
that I received from that school hold me tightly no to leave. The overall experience of
the internship was much rewarding and refreshing. On one side we were bothering about
starting the internship programme and on the other side it just took off so well that it
completed quickly and we just wondered if we had some more days for internship.
This is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. All the people associated
along with the internship programme have been very co-operative. The staff of the
school is very co-operative, supportive and encouraging. Without their encouragement
it would not have been possible to conduct lectures in the class.
This internship gave me an opportunity to realize where I stood, taught me team spirit,
and prepared me for the professional world. Through the process of planning and
teaching I have gained a deeper understanding and awareness of my role in the teaching
profession. I am truly grateful forthisopportunity.
