Educational Technology Research Trends: Examining Six SSCI-indexed Refereed ...Yu-Chang Hsu
This study applied text mining methods to examine the abstracts of 2,997 international research articles published between 2000 and 2010 by six journals included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) in the field of Educational Technology (EDTECH). A total of 19 clusters of research areas were identified, and these clusters were further analyzed in terms of productivity by country and by journal. The analysis revealed research areas with rising trends, stable status, and low attention. This study also identified areas of research emphasis by journal and research strength by country. A discussion of results through the lens of Critical Theory of Technology is also included. The authors hope to inform the EDTECH community about the trends of EDTECH research on topics and regions of research contributions. The authors also believe that such examination of trends can help facilitate fruitful discussions of directions for future research, and possible international collaboration across various geographical regions.

Educational Technology is becoming increasingly important in the higher education sector as innovative educators are using technology to improve pedagogy and student learning. This is not limited to academic institutions as corporate trainers also seek to leverage their people development resources to improve the operating performance of their organizations.
As a result the field of EdTech has been growing rapidly over the past decade as entrepreneurs see the opportunities to use technology to improve the speed and depth of learning. The drive ultimately stems from the transition to a knowledge economy where information is the vital fuel and improved learning can provide breakthrough insights that have substantial public or private value.
This presentation will look at the trends impacting and being impacted by EdTech, student and faculty perceptions, economics, adoption success, factors, investment patterns and the major technologies that are being used in higher educational institutions.

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we published our first ReimaginED report. When we first drafted ReimaginED, we set out to expose systemic challenges in our nation’s K-12 education system and to highlight some of the innovative solutions edtech entrepreneurs were developing to address these challenges. In last year’s report, we showcased ways technology could help our school system become an escalator to opportunity for all.
A lot has changed in three years, including our spinout from NewSchools to Reach Capital. Edtech investment has hit an all time high with a variety of new funders entering the space. As the market begins to mature, global edtech brands are emerging with solutions that are improving educational outcomes and serving millions of students, teachers, and families.
Even with these changes, however, a lot remains the same. The escalator to social mobility remains broken with unequal access to quality education. Meeting individual student needs is still a challenge and grows more pressing as children in US public schools are more diverse than ever. Moreover, our education system is not designed to prepare children for the demands of today's knowledge economy. We're still stuck in a system that is largely manufacturing-based, which falls short on important skills such as coding, creativity, and synthesis. All these challenges and more have led to increasing demands on teachers as both their role and their responsibilities evolve, with little to no support in the transition.
This year’s publication, rebranded as “Reach Capital’s 2016 Edtech Outlook”, touches on these persisting challenges, while also highlighting key drivers that make us optimistic about the potential of technology to improve access and opportunity for kids. This year, our publication is not a roundup of everything in K-12 edtech, but rather our perspective on the challenges,opportunities and promising solutions in the space that we find most compelling. Given our unique vantage point, we also provide a peek “around the corner” into emerging solutions that align with our mission. One day no business without a purpose will exist anymore.
The maker revolution is here. Everyone can be a maker. Children are creating all sorts of STEAM projects. Teachers from all levels are being trained to integrate maker-based projects in their classrooms. It is the Gold Rush of micro-prototyping technologies, robotics, 3D printing, laser cutting, electronic embroidery and embedded wearables. This is partly driven by the open-source electronic market emerging from Shenzhen, online DYI communities, data sharing over the Internet, but mostly by the worldwide movement driven by the 4th industrial revolution.
The next workforce will be faced with the new demands of a ubiquitous, mobile and ambient Internet of connected objects fed by AI and machine learning (Schwab, 2016). By 2025, the World Economic Forum (2015) predicts several technological tipping points, namely 10% of people wearing clothes connected to the internet, 1 trillion sensors also connected to the internet, the first robotic pharmacist, the first 3D printed car in production, and the first implantable mobile phone available commercially. This will bring unprecedented changes because they will arrive at a speed that will affect all our systems in all continents. They will force us to revise the nature of how we live, how we interact with each other and how we work.
Maker education is part of the solution to prepare the next generation workforce because it confronts learners to programming languages, robotics, additive manufacturing, prototyping, the internet of things and the sensing environment. More than just knowledge about these topics, learners have to develop competencies that will prepare them for a complex and ever-changing world that even experts cannot yet imagine. In this talk, I will present the global context for maker education and an operationalized definition of how to develop competencies in this context. I will also present results of several studies on this topic. More specifically, I will discuss fundamental maker knowledge, attitudes, resources, and how to design activities to mobilize competencies to complete multi-faceted projects or solve complex problems.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
