Return on Investment (ROI) for Virtual Environments and Gaming
How effective are virtual and gaming environments? Do they have an impact on the user’s learning, on their job or organization and/or do they have an impact on their daily life?
The presentation will include a brief discussion of Kirkpatrick’s ROI levels 1-5 and how it is useful in the creation and evaluation of virtual gaming environments. Several virtual environments and games (Health Benefits, Pharmacy and Dentistry games for the Healthcare industry and a Tobacco prevention game for Middle school students) will be discussed and demonstrated and will describe how the evaluation results have impacted the effectiveness of the product and the user.
Participants who have conducted ROI evaluations will be asked to share their product evaluation results and how it impacted the users. Participants who are interested in conducting an ROI evaluation will be asked to provide for discussion product descriptions and what results/proof they are looking for in conducting an evaluation.

Imperva's ADC analyzed real-world traffic from sixty Web applications in order to identify attack patterns. The report demonstrates that, across a community of Web applications, early identification of attack sources and attack payloads can significantly improve the effectiveness of application security. Furthermore, it reduces the cost of decision making with respect to attack traffic across the community. Here's how, based on the traffic analyzed by the ADC: (1) multiple target SQL attackers generated nearly 6x their share of the population (2) multiple target comment spam attackers generated 4.3x their share of the population (3) multiple target RFI attackers generated 1.7x their share of the population (this amounted to 73% of total attacks).
In the most recent Hacker Intelligence Initiative report, Imperva analyses vulnerabilities found in the SuperGlobal parameters of the PHP platform, and finds that a multi-step attack requires a multi-layered application security solution.
The application threat landscape can be described as a cyber war. In this report, we explore the technical details of this war. This Web Application Attack Report identifies how many attacks a typical application can expect to suffer annually. In addition, it exposes which countries perpetrated the most attacks and compares application risks by industry. Most importantly, this report reveals the underlying distribution of attacks, presenting an accurate picture of today’s application threat landscape.

Assignment 2: Fink Step 3
Due Week 7 and worth 200 points
For this assignment, you will look at the technology you have integrated into your unit/training and develop ways to assess student performance when they use those technologies.
Often, educators find a great new technology or app to use with their students but then have no idea how to evaluate if it is actually helping students learn. Or, educators find that grading student performance using the new technology is cumbersome and doesn’t actually save any time or provide any value.
For example, if students have an assignment to create a PowerPoint presentation, how will they submit it to you? How will you check to make sure they didn’t just copy it from someplace on the Internet? If students are working on a group project, how can you assess student contributions? These are some issues you will need to think about when you apply technology to your lessons.
First, provide a brief (1-2 pages) description of the specific education technology you intend to incorporate into your unit/training. Include links to the product or app and describe how the students will use it. You do not need to provide specific lesson plans, but need to demonstrate that you have a clear idea of what you want the students to use and how they will use it.
For example, if you were to start using MS Office in the classroom, you could describe how you would allow students to type their papers using MS Word and create presentations using MS PowerPoint instead of hand-writing papers and doing traditional poster projects.
Next, complete the questions for Step 3 of page 15 of Fink’s guide. Include the following information when you answer each question in the worksheet. You will have to copy each question to a new Word document in order to answer it.
1. Forward-looking Assessment: The key is that you have students work on real-world problems. Think about how they will apply the knowledge you are teaching as well as how they will use the technology in the future. How can you create assessments such as a class project, portfolio assignment, a case-study, or other activity where they apply their knowledge?
2. Criteria & Standards: Think about what qualifies as poor work that does not meet your standards, satisfactory work that does meet your standards, and excellent work that exceeds your standards. Be specific. Look at your assignment rubrics for examples of this.
3. Self-Assessment: Students should have some idea of how they are doing without having to ask the teacher or instructor. How will you help them evaluate their own work and learning as they work on their assignments?
4. “FIDeLity” Feedback: This will be the formal feedback that you will give to students as well as informal feedback you will give them as they work on their assignments and assessments.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

When we talk about the increased venture capital interest in edtech companies, it is common to look at graphs like this.
But if we zoom out another 10 years into the past we see that the current investment interest is not unprecedented. What happened in 2000 to sour investor?
The most common answer is the dot.com crash of 1999/2000, but another factor is that for all the increased investment in edtech and education (from a Federal level in the US), there have been no appreciable gains in learning (NB: whether learning can be gauged clearly by standardized tests is another question. For now, it is suffice to say that the metrics the education establishment have chosen to measure did not increase based on increased investment. There was a negative ROI).
Larry Cuban talks about some of the mis-guided attempts to turn education hi-tech in his book Oversold & Underused
Using data to track educational outputs is fairly new. Until recently, teachers taught according to tradition, not data.
Recently, a new wave of “data-driven” teachers are giving up their seat as content-experts and are paying attention to guiding students into learning pathways that work.
Teachers are being given new tools in which to measure their impact. (including A/B tests and control groups which are lifted straight from Medicine/Science)
The SAMR model moves upwards to increased level of technological integration. This is a tool for teachers, NOT for startups.

Much like we find comparables in valuation/funding space we find comparables in the learning space.
John Hattie’s list of “what works” are aligned to a correlation from 0 to 1 (0 being no effect to 1 being perfect causation).
