2. Sub-Genre and its history
My magazine will be a music magazine that falls in the
sub-genre of indie/pop/indie rock. This is a diverse
genre of music and can be split up into many categories.
"indie" stands for individual so indie music is
individual music. It originated in the 1980s and was
called college rock or rock noise. this included bands
such as 'The smiths' and sonic youth. this then grew and
after the release of the 1986 NME cassette tape, this
developed indie pop. by the time it came to the 1990s
indie music began to make its way into the mainstream
music industry. it then split off into sub genres such
as grunge music which covered bands such as 'Nirvana'
and 'Pearl Jam'. these bands continued to get into
mainstream music but in the 2000s with the rise in
technology, the internet became a tool for musical
advertisement. And now in this modern day there are a
large range of sub-genres and artist that all link back
to indie music. indie rock artists will be artists such
as Alt-j, The black keys, and empire of the sun.

Indie imagery has a lot to do with being different. Images
are usually unusual as well as against the mainstream images
that associate with music and fashion. Music albums often show
an unusual image either with the artist themselves or some
form of graphics. This is something I want to incorporate into
my magazine either in the images I take or the layout I use
for it. Most of the colours used are not bright. However there
is no lack of colour. Most colours are in mainly pastel shades
however bright colours are sometimes used. In indie fashion
there is a lot of connotation to vintage and retro. Although a
lot of vintage/ retro clothing is worn there is always a
modern twist on it. This again links back to colours used in
images. Black and white is used significantly in these images
and colour is used t draw attention to important subjects. In
indie fashion there is a lot more colour but again a lot more
connotation to the vintage era.

6. Indie fashion and culture
Fashion is a large factor in indie culture. This who listen
to alternative music and dress with the ‘typical’ indie
fashion are usually called ‘Hipsters’. Those with similar
interests such as these are usually found in urban areas,
or generally towards the city. These are often associated
with wearing vintage clothing or clothing often found in
one off stores or thrift stores. One example of this is the
Custard factory in Birmingham. This is home to a lot of
shops that you would associate with the indie scene.
Hipsters are typically described as affluent or middle
class young Bohemians who reside in gentrifying
neighbourhoods. These are people of all ethnicities of
usually a young age. These types of people usually lead
alternative lifestyles which include food fashion and
views.

These magazines are all magazines that are in or have music from the
Indie genre. These all have things in common. Each magazine has at least
3 main colours. These are used to highlight the main features on the
front cover. In addition to this the masthead for each of these
magazines are in a simple and bold font. Each of these use a block
colour which allow the masthead to be able to become a recognisable

I am going to base my magazine on ‘The fly’ this magazine specifically targets audiences that
like indie music. Although the other magazines have a wider range of music tastes this magazine
specifies this magazine. I also want to incorporate the pop scene and indie rock into my
magazine. Each page of this magazine uses a range of fonts and colours. Although the use of
colour isn't over used which is a feature that I would like to incorporate into my magazine.
This use of colour helps attract attention to the key articles and key subjects on the page.
This magazine uses a simple format that allows the reader to easily see what's on the page
without making it look too cluttered. There is a lot of use of direct address which will
attract the target audience and this is something I want to use in my magazine. One thing I
would change is the amount of images on the contents page. This will allow me to show the
reader more images from the articles that will be featured on this page.

brought Mean Fiddler Holdings Limited the company which owned The Jazz Café, The Garage, The Borderline and held
a majority share in G-A-Y.
On 6 March 2008, the group acquired The Picture House, Edinburgh from Luminar Liquid Limited, a subsidiary of
Luminar Group Holdings plc. On 1 April 2008 MAMA acquired The Institute, Birmingham and on 13 June 2008, they
acquired a majority share in Global Gathering Group Limited (formerly Angel Music Group Limited),the company which
owns GlobalGathering, Godskitchen and Future Gods brands. MAMA acquired 100% of Global Gathering Group Limited
in 2011.
On 15 January 2009, HMV Group purchased a 50 percent stake in MAMA Group. The new company, Mean Fiddler
Group Limited, operated 11 venues across the United Kingdom, including the Hammersmith Apollo, The Forum in
Kentish Town, The Garage, Jazz Café, The Edinburgh Picture House, Digbeth Institute in Birmingham, Heaven, G-A-Y
Bar, G-A-Y Late, The Borderline and Aberdeen’s Moshulu. In January 2010 HMV bought the whole of the MAMA Group
in a deal worth £46m.
HMV sold the Hammersmith Apollo to AEG Live and Eventim UK in May 2012 for £32 million. It sold the remainder of
MAMA & Company to management backed by Lloyds Development Capital in December 2012 for £7.3 million, which
also included the company's 50% stake in Mean Fiddler Group (excluding Heaven and the G-A-Y businesses).
MAMA acquired East Village Arts Club (formerly The Masque), Liverpool on 5 February 2013 and Hoxton Square Bar
and Kitchen on 13 March 2013.

on my magazine The Fly which is an indie music magazine. This could help me
