Task 2
1. How does your product
represent particular
social groups?
2. What character have you included in your film
and what social groups do they represent?
Ø The female characters in our media product represent
young British teenage girls who show interest in
hanging out together, drinking and having a chat. The
girls represented in the opening sequence are from a
lower-middle class making it more average rather
than having upper class teenage girls.
Ø
Ø Our opening sequence is very relatable to our target
audience as they can easily picture themselves in
their situation which will help with the understanding
of what’s happening.
3. The male character in our opening sequence represent a very minor
population of teenage boys. He is the antagonist in our film
therefore he isn’t really a relatable character to our target crowd.
Our aim was to get our audience to dislike the character therefore
we gave him the needed persona.
The way the male character is dressed is very terrifying as we
wanted to keep it a mystery who he is for later in the movie,
therefore we dressed him in a way that you aren’t able to see his
face.
4. How have you constructed ideas about your
character through mise en scene, camerawork,
editing and sound?
With the female characters we ensured to include close-ups so that we make the audience
more engaged and feels closer to the characters. Also with the close-ups we were also
showing the audience how the characters were feeling.
The male character on the other hand though was represented differently as our idea was to
manipulate our audience into disliking his character therefore we decided to hide his face
through out the whole movie.
Portraying ideas behind our characters through editing played a big role as well, as whenever
Ben came on the screen we used a special effect which was a flash effect and this idea
was constructed to create tension for our audience.
The props used in our product also helped us construct an idea for our target audience about
the teenagers for instance the living room scene with the drinks and cigarettes helped us
give an idea of them being naughty and them thinking they are independent meaning they
can do whatever they wish.
5. To what extent are your character representations
typical of your films’ genre?
The ideas about our characters used in our opening sequence come from real life
films of the same genre we have chosen.
We did make slight changes to our characters though, the reason behind this is our
age group and our target audience. It is often very typical that women dress in
a more revealing and sexy way, but for our media product this wasn’t possible,
because we had to make sure that our film is suited to our age group and target
audience.
6. In what ways do your representations reinforce or
challenge social stereotypes?
Ben, our male character is represented as a social stereotype of a teenage boy who
is mentally not where everybody else is and he needs help therefore can
potentially be a real danger towards other people within society.
Our characters overall are very well represented as stereotypes mostly the female
characters, this is because the strong bond and actions between the girls show
how average teenage girls act around each other. This visual representation is
very typical to nowadays teenagers so it is easily relatable to our target
audience.
Our opening sequence portrays a strong message to our target audience about the
dangers teenagers can come across and our product indicated that teenagers
often can be very naïve and not aware of the danger that surround them at all
times.
