The document discusses how a media product represents social groups through its characters. It focuses on one character seen briefly at the end of the opening sequence. He is a 17-year-old white male who is not the protagonist. While the character could be linked to the social group of teenagers, the protagonist does not provide clues about their social group. The document also notes that the product includes the stereotypical horror film trope of teenage victims to appeal to horror fans, while aiming to attract an older audience as well by not focusing on ethnicity to avoid racial stereotypes.

2. • Representation is the way that images and
the language characters use give meaning
to the audience. This includes gender,
ethnicity and age.
3. • The main character within the opening
sequence in seen briefly towards the end.
He is the only character that is seen
throughout the opening, so therefore can
be the only character that can be linked to
a social group.
4. • The character is a 17 year old male and is
not the protagonist. Many teenagers both
male and female are often stereotyped
and categorised in to different social
groups. The protagonist does not give any
clues away to the audience in what social
group he could be in and is not able to be
stereotyped.
5. • However, although my film is a thriller, I
have taken the stereotypical American
horror film death, where many teenagers
are the victim and subject to a brutal
murder. This influenced me when
choosing the characters and age groups I
would use. This attracts horror film fans as
they can relate to the character as well as
the older audience my film is trying to
attract.
6. • My male character is white. I have not
represented ethnicity in my opening
sequence as I didn’t want the storyline to
be focused on race. Also many
stereotypes can be drawn of the character
from the audience when including different
ethnicities, especially when including
murder, which may give the wrong
impression to the audience.
