How does your media product
represent certain social groups?

2. • We would like to believe our film is appealing to both
males and females as films of the thriller genre tend
to be popular with both audiences.
• However within our opening scene we chose to use a
female character as the lead role as a representative
for women. We believed that it would portray
women to be a lot stronger than they are
stereotypically represented in the film world e.g.
often in horrors the female is the “femme fetale”.
• We thought it would also reach a male audience, it
would not only give women a stronger reputation,
but it may change the view that men have towards
women and create more social equality.

3. • Our opening scene does not lean towards any
sexuality as we do not make it clear what the
sexual orientation of our lead character is. We
decided to do this as it creates more ambiguity
amongst our character.
• Our character is a young adult, we chose to use
this age range as it not only represents ages 20+
but it also appeals to a younger audience as the
character can be related to. It also appeals to an
audience up to the age of 50 as it is a
psychological thriller therefore it forces the
audience to think about what has/could happen,
it allows the audience to create their own view
and interpret or predict the narrative and what
will happen.

4. • As the location of our film is inside a typical
house, we decided that our character is
working/middle class as the location/mise en
scene does not represent lower class.
Moreover the mise en scene of her clothing
helps represent her age.
• We used a typical household and clothing to
show that she is just the average girl and that
there is no stereotype to her, to most people
she is just the girl next door but she holds a lot
of dark secrets.

5. • We also made our film represent modern
society by using a mixed race character. Our
actress is half Jamaican and therefore has an
original/unique appearance. We got this idea
from the thriller film “Se7en” where the two
main characters are both of difference
ethnicities.
