QUESTION 2 : HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS?
GENDER
All our characters in our opening scene are females. We wanted to represent women has
our main characters and to show their worth of equality and power. We did this by
deciding not to use any male characters as we wanted to show the audience the
differences between both genders. We made this choice by creating the idea of making
women appear more powerful as well as vulnerable. We used our camera shots and
different angles to encourage this idea. In some scenes, we’ve used low angles to make it
seem the character is powerful? Lost? Isolated? Depending on what we was trying to
achieve on the scene, it was more likely going to be on of them. If isolated, we wanted to
make sure it looked like it was just them in the picture or at least focused. This could be
persuaded by not having any objects that are valuable around them or important in any
way that’s reflecting the character itself.
AGE
The audience range to watch this sort of opening scene would be 18-21.
However we are trying to film this as if we are their age as we are a little
younger. This would make the audience feel as if we are their age, to
make them fit in. This represented the stereotypical type of age in post
apocalyptic genre, saying people who were 18+ were able to survive and
adapt to this kind of world, as elderly or any younger would have not
been able cope with the new life with such quick development that
needed to be taught or observed by.
ETHNICITY
In our opening scene, there was three white British nationalities. There wasn’t much
options due to our location but there was an idea suggested when we watched over our
completed opening scene. We can represent the white British as the stereotypical type as
we wanted to present them with strength, power, survivors, instead of making black
nationalities looking strong and mostly surviving.
Stereo types tend to look for the odd one out, e.g. age, gender, nationality, mostly a black
person as they would normally stand out from the crowd with power, lack of confidence
or even strength. However we had the same nationalities and this could also be
represented as challenging one another, or testing their friendship as the story of our
film, friendship was lost and gone but never forgotten.
