How does your media product represent particular social groups?
A social group is a group of people that interact with one another and they share similar
characteristics that may vary from culture to age. Social groups and stereotypes help establish
certain characteristics from each character; this helps the audience understand what to expect what
a character will bring to the film as they get an understanding of them as a person in a short period
of time.
Our media product goes with the traditional stereotype in films as we use male characters to drive
the narrative as our main protagonists are a group of male friends. We have used this because this
can attract a wide range of an audience as the male figures can appeal to the female audience as
well as the male audience because they might take a liking towards one of the male characters. We
have a wide range of characters with different characteristics which will help people gain a
connection with them as they all have different personalities that are different.
In our film opening we have represented young teenagers to be fun, wild and exciting people as we
have showed them having fun in the party as they party away the night. They are shown drinking
and dancing with one another. However, the teenagers in our film opening are also shown being
irresponsible as they party because they let the drinking get out of hand which foreshadows the
upcoming events. This shows that they are still young and don’t have any serious commitments that
an adult will have like work or a family to look after.
We have dressed them to be seen as stereotypical teenager as we have had those wearing hoodies
and t-shirts to shows that they are young adults but haven’t yet matured enough to wear clothes
that will represent them in a positive light. This shows that our characters don’t have an eye on the
future as they are more into enjoying their lives as whilst they can.
We use our props to add comedic elements to each scene but also show our social groups in
unfamiliar ways. For example, the character Ashraf Uddin was wearing a dress after he wakes up
from the party and he is showed calling everyone to arrange them meeting up. This implies that he is
the leader of the pack and the stereotypical male leader is usually shown as someone strong and
smart but the dress puts the character in a different perspective as it belittles his power.
The way we represented gender in the movie was by keeping all the characters male which had an
effect on the narrative as the protagonists refers to the party as a ‘Sausage fest’ this implies that he
expected there to be females as this could have added more of a romantic element to the film which
the audience would have expected a love story to blossom between the characters.
Traditional male stereotypes in films are that they like to be dominant as they like to have control.
This is through the roles that male characters play in modern films like business men and they play
the hero in film as they consistently save the day. In our film opening the males are represented as
clumsy and irresponsible; this is because the ways we have set up our individual character
introductions were inspired from the movie The Hangover as we wanted to show them wake up with
them not knowing what happen the night before. We have adapted it by making them way up alone
in several different locations with something different happening to them which helped us add to
the comedy genre. Each character was not shown in the traditional stereotypes that are created in
films for males.
