2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (I.E. of
film)
2. For our film opening my group has chosen to focus on challenging the
stereotype’s presented in urban drama. Our film opening is presented in a
typical urban environment and time scale which further complements the
actions done in the opening, however towards the end we subverted the
stereotype of youths being negative, involved in gangs and overall not
pleasant people.
This is the typical view that people have of
urban youths. Mostly associated with gangs,
and typically all come from working class black
or white backgrounds
3. We wanted to show that we subverted the stereotype in order to show
something different. As shown on most urban drama movie in recent times
they mostly all conform to the stereotype and show the negatives rather
then the positives.
This is along the lines of what we wanted to show when
we subverted the stereotype of urban youths. Our
character showed that although you come from an
urban background it is possible to make something of
yourself . Audiences are accustomed to seeing the
typical gang setting and someone getting killed we
wanted the audience to see that there can be another
side to urban drama movies. A much positive
4. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
For our film opening we have chosen to represent the youths in urban
dramas. We wanted to show the typical attitudes and representations of
young adults in this was the main focus around our opening as it influenced
the kind of setting and time we chose to film.
This is the typical location of our film
opening.
5. these choices we made helped bring out the negative representation that
we wanted to show. However we also showed the other side to urban
youths, we showed the side of youths which were in good jobs and working
instead of participating in gang activity. This allowed us to give both
portrayals and contrast between.
