EVALUATION TASK 1
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
EVALUATION TASK 1
I will be analysing and comparing similar media
products to mine. I will be explaining how we
challenge and don't challenge genre conventions
by comparing similar digipak’s, video’s and
websites of similar artists products to mine.
CONVENTIONS
There are two types of conventions: Technical and
Symbolic. Technical conventions are all the ways in
which equipment is generically used in media like
fast editing in a music video to a dance song.
Symbolic Conventions are what you see that is to
show the genre of video like gold chains and money
in a rap music video. These conventions are used
to portray the genre of music to the audience and to
get the audience to think what they want them to
think about the video.
GENRE
The song for our music video was Bass House which
is a sub genre of house. Bass House is a modern
sub genre of house which manipulates bass synths in
songs with bass drops and sampled vocals. The main
artists in this genre are Jauz, Tchami, Autoerotique,
Ephwurd and Habstrakt
ARTISTS
The artists I am going to compare my artist to are:
• Kiasmos
• Tchami
• Bixel Boys
• Motez
• Odd Mob
• Odesza
MUSIC VIDEO
Motez - The Vibe Guillotine
These two shots are very similar in the way that the
lighting has made it dark for the club scene but also
flashing colourful lights. This technical convention is
shown in many music videos of this genre. In these two
shots as well they both have unrealistic animals costumes
on dancing in a club environment which shows a symbolic
connection of the genre.
MUSIC VIDEO
Kiasmos - Blurred Guillotine
In these two shots the camera is showing people dancing
in the mise-en-scene and the lighting is clearly showing
them. This shows the genre of music and the obvious
genre conventions by the camera moving with the dancing.
Both the costume is both not relevant in the video to the
dancing in the club and dancing by the river. It shows
randomness and in this genre of music video this happens
MUSIC VIDEO
GuillotineBixel Boys - Ain’t Your Girl
In these two shots the set design is very similar with a
dance floor and the shining white light strobe light on the
dancers. The angle is quite similar and the same sort of
distance from the dancers. This shows them giving space
to the dancers to show the dancing clearly and properly
and makes the dance genre obvious. They are both
wearing normal clothes to show casualness of them
being comfortable in the dancing environment.
MUSIC VIDEO
Tchami - Promesses Guillotine
These two wide shots are very distant from the actor
which creates a sense of mystery and tension. They are
also both wearing strange costumes which you wouldn't
normally see and this challenges the genre convention
because of the unusualness it creates in the video. They
also both have quite dark lighting which creates a
mysterious scene and scary feeling.
MUSIC VIDEO
GuillotineOdessa - Across The Room
These two shots both have dancers with dark lighting and a
bright light on the dancers. This shows the audience where
the focus is and creates a lively feel with the genre of
music. They are both mid shots showing most of the
dancers body which engages the audience with the
dancers and gives the audience an energetic and close
feel.
MUSIC VIDEO
GuillotineOdd Mob - Into You
These two are both close up shots of the dancers in the
video which let the audience interact with the dancers and
pull them in to the action of the video. Also they both shake
around to show tension and fast movement to the music in
the video. The lighting is very different in each which
challenges the genre conventions and goes against what
the norm would be in this genre.
DIGIPAK
Splint - ResistTchami - The Sermon
In both the artworks the writing and font is very simplistic
to show the genre is not about the artist but more about
the music. The colours are quite dark and pale to show the
genre is not a mainstream or obvious genre that anyone
would normally pick up. It tells the audience that
something is different and this goes against the genre
DIGIPAK
Odd Mob - Gassed Up Splint - Resist
These artworks are both black and white and show
simplicity again to focus on the album name and music.
The dark and light colours give off a weird alternative feel
to the artwork to tell the audience this product is different
from the norm and this challenges the convention.
DIGIPAK
Splint - ResistTchami - Move Your Body
These two both have a shot of the artist but you cannot
identify them easily which tells the audience they have a
mysterious star image and that this album is different. The
colours are also dark and light which creates a confused
feeling of happy and sad so the audience is confused on the
WEBSITE
Splint Motez
These two website main pages are quite similar in how the
star image is straight away quite mysterious because you
aren't sure where to look. They are both dark and have the
artists name in a big font to show the artist is more
important than actually seeing what they look like. This
adds to the mysteriousness of the star image and sticks to
the DJ genre conventions.
WEBSITE
These two websites both have this contact page
which is also very dark and gives you very similar
information as every website would. For the star
image this still shows a bit of mystery and the
plain background and only a bit of information.
Splint Odesza
WEBSITE
These two websites have an about page which
tells us a bit about the artist and their
background. Once again you can still not see the
artist giving off a mysterious feeling even though
it is talking about them. This also sticks to this
mysterious DJ genre convention.
