1. Evaluation task 1: In what ways does “Rihanna” by Gen
Sykes use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products.
2. Media form
A media form is a shape of any media
products made e.g. music clip or a thriller
sequence.
The media form structure consists of
several points:
- the medium used ( film, video, clip -
represents the start up product)
- the length ( 3/4 mins)
- the content ( the plot of the future
product e.g. performance, narrative,
make up etc.)
The product we have made is a music video on
Clean Bandit song “Rihanna”
3. Media conventions
Media convention or a form is a key representation of a certain type of product. These are things
which are expected by the audience and by noticing them on the screen the audience will
differentiate this product. There are different forms of conventions: technical and symbolical.
4. locations
For our music video we decided to
base our shooting in the studio as that
was the only place where we could
place our sets and film with an
additional lighting. We needed to play
around with the light in order to make
our video more interesting for a young
aged audience.
However, Lorde for her music video
“Team” chose different location despite the
fact that the target audience is mainly
similar. She prefers to shoot most all her
clips outside, on a certain location. This
helps her to increase the interest towards
her video because the audience is
attracted by an interesting plot and the
location.
5. Lighting
As I said previously we chose a studio filming therefore
there was no day light, however we used special lighting
effect and reflected circles and other figures on the sets.
Also, the idea of a pink/blue/ purple set was achieved using
the same lighting equipment, instead of white light we used
sometimes blue or pink regarding the set on which we were
filming at that moment.
However, it two other music videos by Lorde
and Ellie Golding, lighting effects were used
rarely because the main idea of both of these
plot was to show a real life and therefore they
were filmed outside, using a day light.
6. Camera
Close-ups and Big close-ups were very important for
us because this shots help the audience to recognise
the artists, understand the theme and the genre.
In Ellie Golding clip “Love me like you do” close-ups shots
are also very important , therefore many pop artist use this
type, to emphasise the link with music and lyrics and also
help the audience to focus on certain things in the artist’s
perfomance.
7. CameraLong shots were mainly used to show a band in
location or the artist.
In our music video we didn’t use long
shots a lot however we used them to
represent the cello and the violin players
who were sitting in a certain set especially
made for their performance.
However, in “Love like you do” the use of long
shots was very noticeable, the plot included many
different locations and therefore there was a need
to show a new location within the long shot. Thus
there are around 6 long shots which help the
audience to rezlise what is going on on the screen.
8. Perfomance
In Ellie Golding music video there are three parts of a plot. This is made to interest more the audience and also to make a
link between the lyrics and the predominance. Therefore some bits which were cut from the film involve dancing scenes
and this made the producer think about extra shots with a singer dancing. In our music video we didn’t have any plot and
therefore there is no story to tell to the audience and this is why we didn’t do any specific scenes involving the singer
however we decided to make a link between the music and the perfomance, therefore instead of having just a singer we
included in the video a cello and a violin players so then the audience could imagine which instruments are included in the
music. In every part of the song where the audience can hear an instrumental part we put two players and they performed
with their instruments.
9. Editing
There is a certain atmosphere in each if the video and this is done with a use of effects. In Ellie Golding and Lorde
videos there is a slow motion effect which gives the audience a feeling of slow movement and therefore helps to
feel the music. In our video we used slow motion effect in part with dancers however we cut this out because it
didn’t suit the whole video and did not link with the rest of the video. However, for the better understanding of the
music and lyrics we added a cross-dissolve effect and when suddenly there was a part with instrument following
the singing the picture with a singer slowly dissolved in the shot with players.
10. Editing
In Lorde’s video the
audience could see
two story lines and
each of them tells
us a certain idea.
Each shot
represents a small
part of the idea
however when they
follow eacb other
the audience can
easily built the
whole picture.
The same idea we used
in our music video. Each
scenes was structured
so every shot before
had a continuation and
the flow of the music
was always linked with a
scene. Therefore there
is a feeling of a whole
production because
each pik in the music
was represented by a
certain scene.
How the video is structured and how shots are following each
other is very important key. Therefore in each music video there is
a story to tell and the order of shots help the audience to recognise
this flow of the idea.
11. What is a Digipak?
Digipak can be explained as a case for CD/DvD. They consist of a
book-styled paperboard, with one or more plastic trays capable of
holding a CD/ DvD attached to the inside.
12. Digipak: photoshop
Basically, for our digipak idea we need to use three different colours from the same colour family.
Aquamarine colours give an expression of more feminine, quite delicate. These colour gives a feeling of
unusual design, which express the artist, the genre- indi which is usually represented by this type of colour
theme.
13. Digipak: Final pieceWe changed the colours and font
style/format to make it link more
with the title on the exterior
design because people thought it
was wired to have different fonts
but originally that was idea
anyway. Finally we changed the
colour of the disk to match the
contrast and flip over effect of
have the background of the cover
white and the font in the peacock
pattern and then inside the
peacock pattern is on the back
ground the the disk is white which
links really well with each and
had a stronger visual effect
towards it.
In Ellie Golding digipak
we can see a more
colourful template. Cours
which are used a bright
and this attract a target
audience. Also, the title
of the album and the
name of the disc in also
on the main cover board,
so the audience can
easily notice it on the
shelf.
14. wix.com: idea
To produce a typical website which can present a star in an ordinary way I looked at several singers and their websites to realize
which key issues are needed and how it must be overplayed. Therefore as an example I took lorde’s website because I liked the
template and the background colour. Personally, I feel really into this kind of example. However, despite the fact that all videos and
digipak of Lorde have similar colours, effects and locations the website’s main colour is inappropriate for our final idea of the website.
The colour which we chose was more bright and attracts the audience in terms of its fixings. However, I liked the way in Lorde’s
website they represent a singer therefore I took this idea and used it in other page of the website. The colour which we preferred was
not definite and this is why I was not sure about the template and how it must look like at the end. However, I was pretty sure that the
main theme of the website must be more childish as the star image we had created associated more with pink, blue and purple than
with black or any other dark colours.
