2. Plot
• A young man assumes a dead man's identity and finds himself trapped in an
underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed
doors on the lives of other men. It is an underground Russian Roulette game where
people are being forced to play the game in order for rich criminals to place bets on
them on how long they will last. It is thrilling and scary, the way the lives of so many
people are in the hands of luck creates a very dark, strange atmosphere.
• In our thriller opening sequence, there are three people that are being held captive,
they are being forced to shoot a gun at each other in a Russian Roulette sort of fashion.
The crazy Bulgarian gunmen puts one round in to the revolver gun, this means there is a
one in six chance of the bullet firing and killing the person. The themes are similar in the
way that the people’s lives are being put in to the hands of luck against their will by a
revolver gun.
3. Costumes
One of the men in the front of the picture is
wearing a smart black suit with a white shirt, like
one of the actors in my thriller, the other one is
wearing a slightly more normal outfit; also like
one of the characters in our thriller. One
difference is that there aren’t many female
characters in this film.
4. Similarities
In 13 the characters are shooting the gun at another player,
on our thriller the players are shooting the gun at another
person as well. This is a strong similarity as in Russian
Roulette you normally point the gun at your own head.
This is something unusual as is puts a twist on the Russian
roulette game.
13 is an action thriller, redemption is also an action thriller,
they are both filmed in very dark sets, which help to create
an un-settling mood to create tension and fear for the
5. The Deer Hunter
The old war drama directed by Michael Cimino about a trio of
American steelworkers whose lives are changed forever after they
fight in the Vietnam War. The three soldiers are played by Robert
De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage, with John
Cazale, Meryl Streep, and George Dzundza playing supporting
roles. The story takes place in Clairton, Pennsylvania a
small working class town on the Monongahela River south
of Pittsburgh, and in Vietnam. There is a Russian Roulette scene in
the film, despite not being too similar to our thriller, it still has
some of the same aspects of our idea.
6. Similarities
The soldiers are taken as prisoners by
other Vietnamese
Soldiers. They are forced to play Russian
Roulette in front of the whole group. It is
similar to ours as they are both involving
people being forced to play the game.
7. Leon (1994)
This film is about a 12-year-old girl, taken in
by Léon, an assassin, after her family is
murdered. Léon and Mathilda form an
unusual relationship, as she becomes his
protégée and learns the assassin's trade. In
the scene where Russian Roulette is involved
she is doing it to prove her loyalty to Leon the
assassin. It is similar to ours as it shows a
young looking girl in a scenario where Russian
Roulette is involved. The girl is crying, like in
our thriller, this represents and backs up the
stereotype for women in film being more
scared of things like this.
