DEFINITION AND UNDERSTANDING
Production: The process if manufacturing something.
Distribution: Sharing something out among a number of recipients.
Marketing: Promoting and selling products or services, including
market research and advertising.
Exhibition: A public display of works of art or items of interest, eg in a
cinema, on DVD, streaming, TV etc.
DEFINITION AND UNDERSTANDING
* DIFFERENT ROLES INVOLVED
Production: The Producer will work on the production for the entire
process from the starting concept right through to marketing and
distribution. They hire key members of the production team, approve
locations, schedules, budgets, and scripts. They must be good
negotiators when dealing with suppliers and motivators as they work
directly with the production and post-production team to make sure
that everyone is on track and happy.
Distribution: Film distributors are the connection between producers,
who are the people at studios that make a film, and exhibitors, like
the cinemas and TV stations that show them. Distributors must
identify a film’s target audience, thinking of ways to promote it to
the people and then making sure it’s shown in the right places for
them to see it.
Marketing: Marketing teams need to have a good knowledge of the
target viewers. This means building up an accurate picture using the
resources that are available. It is important for them to take their
personal opinions out of as many decisions as they can as it could
effect things. Information can be gathered from questionnaires,
focus groups, the internet, interviews and many more things.
Exhibition: This involves many different things like locating suitable
venues, financial and managerial administration, marketing, selling
and ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation. They
must look for a good place for the film to be shown to ensure that as

• Director: Christopher Nolan
• Film series: Batman Film Series
• Box office: 1.085 billion USD
• Budget: 250 million USD
PRODUCTION
• Directed by Christopher Nolan and starred in by Christian Bale. Bale
has been described in the media as one of the most versatile and
talented actors of his generation. He fit the role of Batman, very
well. He has been in many other films like American psycho.
However, the Batman trilogy was some of his best work as an actor.
• Shot in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, on IMAX cameras. These are the
best cameras you can use to film a film right now. The technology is
very advanced on them.
• The trilogy is owned by DC comics.
DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING
• The website for the film launched in May 2011, introducing a online
marketing campaign. Users made a Twitter hashtag,
"#TheFireRises". This was a very clever marketing scheme as more
people will see it online.
• Distribution was done by Warner Bros Pictures.
• July 6, 2012, Warner Bros held an IMAX screening of The Dark
Knight Rises for more than one hundred reporters and critics.
However, issues with the computer forced the studio to postpone
the screening by a day. The film later premiered on July 16 at the
AMC Lincoln Square Theatre in New York City, followed by a
European premiere on July 18 at Leicester Square in London,
England.

MONSTERS
• Directed by: Gareth Edwards
• Produced by: Allan Niblo, James Richardson
• Release date: 13 March 2010 (SXSW), 3 December 2010 (United
Kingdom)
• Budget: $500,000
• Box office: $4.2 million
• Monsters is a 2010 science fiction film written and directed by
Gareth Edwards. Edwards also served as the cinematographer,
production designer, and visual effects artist.
PRODUCTION
• Directed by Gareth Edwards and starred in by, Scoot McNairy. In
2013, McNairy appeared in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.
McNairy filmed his second movie with Michael Fassbender, Leonard
Abrahamson's Frank, and co-starred in Jaume Collet-Serra's Non-
Stop, opposite Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore.
• The filming equipment cost approximately $15,000, and the
production budget was $500,000.
• The film was edited on a laptop and many of the locations in the film
were used without permission and most of the extras were people
who were already at the locations. This shows that they clearly did
not have a big budget and the film was not funded by a big company.
• It was shot in Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and the United
States over three weeks, not a long time at all to film a movie of this
level.
DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING
• Distribution company: Vertigo Films
• For the marketing of the 2010 film Monsters, they tried something
different to fit for the amount of money they had. They used a
campaign based around the website 'Foursquare'. It is similar to
some aspects of Facebook. By checking in at the places, it allowed
your friends to see where you were watching the films and helped
gain hype. It created 'infected zones' around the country including
Bristol, Glasgow, Nottingham, Cardiff and Greenwich Observatory.
These 'infected zones' helped the film to gain notoriety and made it
an event just to turn up to the zones.
EXHIBITION
• The film was released in 29 different countries.
• The total UK box office revenue was £847,442
• Worldwide box office revenue was $237,301
• On the opening weekend it made £348,577
• In the US opening weekend it made $20,508

  • 13. PRODUCTION • Directed by Gareth Edwards and starred in by, Scoot McNairy. In 2013, McNairy appeared in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.
