2. Audience
An audience are the main people you are targeting your
product towards.
They are the people who are going to consume your
product and give you feedback on what they think of it.
Their feedback will help to enhance your product.
3. Audience expectations of our genre
Generally the audience would expect the following from
a supernatural horror:
a character to be effected by or encounter something
supernatural
for there to be many unanswered questions and lots of
mystery (enigma)
for it not to be simple/ easy to predict. They would prefer
unexpected turns of events.
a character to face problems or obstacles through the
course of the story
4. Audience expectations of our genre
in an opening sequence
Generally, the audience would expect the following
from a supernatural horror opening sequence:
lots of confusion and unanswered questions (essential for
there to be enigma).
for it to be implicit, so they can still engage with the
characters but nothing is given away too much.
to be introduced to an odd or unusual location or
surrounding.
For hints which leave the audience questioning what is
really happening in the opening sequence, leaving them to
question what will happen next.
5. Institution:
Blockbuster or Independent?
We were mostly inspired by independent movies such as
‘Insidious’, ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Sinister’.
Our opening sequence would be independent too (just
like these movies) as we aim to use many of the same
or similar conventions used in these movies.
EXIBITION: because the film would be independent, it
would therefore be exhibited in the following ways:
Independent/ Arthouse cinemas
Social networks/ online
Movie platforms such as ‘Netflix’
6. Mass or niche?
It is targeted at a mass audience despite it being an
independent film.
Films such as ‘Insidious’, ‘Paranormal Activity’ and
‘Sinister’ were all targeted at mass audiences despite
being independent as supernatural horror is a popular
subgenre of horror.
7. What is a target audience and
secondary audience?
Target Audience Secondary Audience
The audience who you are intentionally
making the product for. You know they
want your product and are the ones
who are likely to bring success.
Anybody who wants your product who
you did not target your product
towards. It includes everyone who isn’t
in your target audience.
