2. Brief History
• The first short films were shown in 1984 through Thomas
Edison's kinetoscope, a peepshow-like device for
individual viewing.
• The most famous short film of this time was ‘Arrival of a
train at La Ciotat(1895)”, this was a horror which had
audiences fleeing in terror as a celluloid locomotive
hurtled towards them.
• Many actors have become famous through short films,
the most well recognised of which was Charlie Chaplin.
• Walt Disney also made cartoons very popular with short
films and these became a big fan favourite.
3. Genre
Over the last 10 years all of the short films have been split up into
lots of different categories known as genres. There are many
different genres that films can be put into such as;
• Comedy
• Romance
• Horror
There are many different types of films that go into each category
and I will give you an example for a couple of genres.

5. Representations
Many people are portrayed in short films and full length
films for that matter, they often target groups of people
out who seem to be known as lower class or the working
class. Other groups that are targeted out are teenagers
for the use of crime films. Especially young black lads that
are on the street are commonly used in films.
Having people portrayed in this matter is bad because
not every teen is involved in crime or drug use. but films
often make it come across in this way which is incorrect.
The majority of young are innocent and are not involved
in this.

7. Audience
Every film wants to target a specific audience weather
its a short film or a feature film. Without knowing who
they are targeting the film at they wont know how they
should make their film. For example the dialogue a teen
uses will be very different to the dialogue a toddler
would use.
Films need to be very specific with who they want their
film to reach so the way they advertise their film will
also be a key factor to get the target audience into the
cinema to watch the film.
