Tag questions
The tag questionsare shortphrasesorquestions(mini-questions) whichis placed at the end of an
affirmative ornegative sentence and generally aim to confirm or deny the content of the phrase
itself.
Basic rules tag questions:
 The tag questions always use auxiliary verbs.
 With affirmative sentences use a tag question negative.
 With negative sentences use a tag question in the affirmative or positive.
The law of opposites
 Affirmative, the question tag will negatively:
You speak English, don't you? Hablas inglés ¿no?
 in negative sentences, the question tag is in the affirmative:
You haven´t got a pet, have you? No tienes una mascota, ¿verdad?
 Affirmative sentences
(The auxiliary verb in the "tag" is negative).
 Negative sentences
(The auxiliary verb in the "tag" is yes).
 to be
Affirmative: You're a teacher, aren't you?
Negative: You aren't a teacher, are you?
 Present time
Affirmative: You speak English, don't you?
Negative: You don't speak English, do you?
 Past time
Affirmative: He went to school, didn't he?
Negative: He didn't go to school, did he?
 Perfect present
Affirmative: You have finished, haven't you?
Negative: You haven't finished, have you?
 Future
Affirmative: She will cook, won't she?
Negative: She won't cook, will she?
